Hi Nate and Francesca I have modified the issues page so that the link from issue 4 now leads to a table of contents ?(TOC) page for your upcoming issue. http://peerproduction.net/issues/ This TOC page is private at this point so you will need to be logged in to Wordpress to populate it. (@Nate: you can create an account for Francesca in the "Users" section of the site if necessary.) The TOC page features some examples of headers and links which you can use as a guide for the creation of your issue. As mentioned previously, there is now an advice page which provides a number of "tips for uploading content". http://peerproduction.net/about/advice/ If you have any other questions do let us know. I look forward to reading your content. All best, Mathieu

Hoping is of the interest of people in this list. ENGLISH/CATALÀ/CASTELLANO ENGLISH Debate & Presentation European project P2Pvalue: Conditions that favour value creation in common-based peer production 22 January 2014 // Debate 18-21h Barcelona (CCCB) & online. Networking meet up 21-23h at the C3 BAR (CCCB). How does value works in the emerging organizational forms? What conditions favor the collaborative production? What distinguishes the commons from the traditional hierarchical and commercial organizations? Discussion and presentation of the European action research project P2Pvalue "Techno-social platform for sustainable models and value generation in commons-based peer production in the Future Internet". @P2Pvalue #P2Pvalue Live streaming: www.p2pvalue.eu/streaming<http://www.p2pvalue.eu/streaming> Lloc: CCCB - Montalegre, 5 - 08001 Barcelona. Sala Auditori Event info: http://igopnet.cc/p2pvalue-barcelona/ The Common based peer production is an emerging and innovative production model in which the creative energy of large numbers of citizens supported by a digital platform takes place outside the parameters of the traditionally hierarchical and mercantil organization resulting in the public provision of commons resources. This is the case of projects such as Linux, Wikipedia, Open Street Map or SETI , etc.. Recently there has been an expansion to other areas of activity, such as citizen science, product design, management of common spaces and open data sources. The project P2Pvalue depart from an exercise of mapping the diffusion and hybridization of peer production, and investigates the conditions which favor the collaborative creation and the logic of value of these emerging forms. The research results will be used to develop a digital -platform based on decentralized architecture and the design of public policies that promote the commons. 18h Roundtable debate with international participants in the project, and a large representation of local experiences, in which the inspiring axes of the project will be discussed and presented the early reflections and tools generated. The session is open and free and is intended to be also an invitation to participate in the project and meeting up with local communities P2P. Moderation: Marco Berlinguer (IGOPnet.cc Autonomous University of Barcelona) "What governance mean in the digital environment and how it shapes collaborative production" by Mayo Fuster Morell (IGOPnet.cc Autonomous University of Barcelona; Berkman center fellow; Spanish Chapter Open Knowledge Foundation; Amical Viquimedia) "Legal challenges around collaborative production" by Primavera De Filippi (CNRS; Berkman center) "Value in collaborative economies" by Adam Advisson (University of Milan. Co-author of the book "The Ethical Economy. Happy new year to all! I have just tried to look at the JoPP website but apparently the domain expired about a week ago on 29 December. Can I be of any assistance in helping to renew it or are others already dealing with this? Thanks, Angela

Thank you, Johan. I agree with what you say: it makes sense to have most (if not all) of the second issue written by non-affiliated authors and to do that, it's important that the two issues, though related, have a clearly different focus: so, the first issue will be about the set of policies aimed at transforming the productive structure of a country in the direction of the commons and peer production, while the second part will be a critical evaluation of the implementation of such a program by a state. Or something like that. In any case, the call-for-papers will be key to attracting the kind of non-affiliated contributions we want, so it will probably go through a few iterations until we get it right :) -G. CFP: CHI2014 Workshop: Perspectives on Gender and Product Design: Are We Living in a "Man-Made" World?

*** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION *** *** Apologies for cross-posting *** ---------------- CFP: CHI2014 Workshop: Perspectives on Gender and Product Design: Are We Living in a "Man-Made" World? https://sites.google.com/site/technologydesignperspectives/home This one-day workshop will be held as part of the CHI 2014 <http://chi2014.acm.org/> annual ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Science, held in Toronto, Canada 26 April - 1 May. *************** Submission Deadline: *January 17th, 2014* Notification of Acceptance/Rejection: *February 10th, 2014* Workshop Date & Location: *Saturday April 26th 2013*, Toronto, Canada *************** Interactive technologies have a profound mediating effect on the way we obtain and contribute to knowledge, relate to each other and contribute to society. Often, "gender" is not a factor that is explicitly considered in the design of these technologies. When gender is considered, products are often designed with idealised models of gendered "users"–designed for men, designed for women, designed for boys, designed for girls, or designed for the "average user" who could be male or female. However, the ways in which gender-bias or gender-neutrality are constructed in the design process and the resulting effect on the interactive artifacts that are produced is not well understood. Further, research within the HCI arena has only begun to scratch the surface of how perceived "gender" influences interactive product use by users of any gender. Given the impact and potential ramifications of technological products on society, it is imperative that we more deeply understand the tacit and explicit models of gendered practice that underlie design choices and product uptake. We need to inclusively accommodate and integrate different perspectives in shaping our modern day technologies. This workshop focuses on the bringing to the fore different perspectives of how gender affects technology design, adoption, appropriation, and possibly resistance. We will address what is missing from the discussion, and why. We will consider what, if anything, needs to change in design methods and perspectives. We will try to elaborate and account for possible gender differences in perceived product value and in actual and perceived ease of use. We will consider whether there are gender-related differences in the creation and experience of delightful engagement with interactive technologies. Examples of issues to be discussed and arenas of potential change are: * increasing research and understanding of gender impact on technology design and use * consideration of how to increase representation of nuanced gender perspectives within design processes in the technology sector and within fields related to technology production, including computer science and engineering, and also design, design research, and related fields * discussing what would constitute gender-agnostic or gender inclusive design/development environments, including consideration of design biases in software tools and in digital and/or physical collaborative design/development settings * addressing the lack of discussion regarding gender impact in the fields related to technology design, including the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) whose very charter is to be "user-centric" and inclusive * reflecting on the low grant support for academic research which looks at the representation of gendered perspectives in our current discourse, which in turn leads to a lack of reliable, informative and actionable technology & gender research This workshop will address these issues with respect to the tools, technologies, and processes we experience and design, both in industry and academia, and with the aim of producing some actionable steps forward. Please submit a position paper (maximum of 4 pages) detailing your background, and interest and experience in this topic. Participants will be selected on the basis of their potential to contribute to the overall discussion and the workshop goals. To participate in this workshop, position papers must be submitted by January 17th 2014. Please use the CHI Extended Abstracts format. Submissions should be sent to technology.design.perspectives(a)gmail.com -- Shaowen Bardzell, Ph.D. Associate Professor Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction The Cultural Research in Technology (CRIT) Group http://crit.soic.indiana.edu/

Open access / academic social network-repository

Hi Mathieu, i've been following the discussion on Air-L with great interest and definitely support further discussions about "green" open access and the idea of a decentralized academic social network. Both of them could be ways to channel towards volunteer projects the funding that, as you highlight, is indeed starting to become available for open access and it woud be great if more of it could go towards the "good kind". ;) Cheers, Francesca > > Message: 2 > Date: Sat, 14 Dec 2013 02:40:43 +0000 > From: Mathieu ONeil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> > Subject: [JoPP-Public] Open access / academic social > network-repository > To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list > <jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org> > Cc: Robert Ackland <robert.ackland(a)anu.edu.au> > Message-ID: > < > 37EAFE25559D4643B43426CE35235DCE019972A1(a)SIXPRD0610MB383.apcprd06.prod.outlook.com > > > > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > Hi all > > There has been a lively discussion on the Internet research listserv about > the exorbitant fees levied by academic publishers, possible alternatives, > funding for "green" open access journals (as in free all the time like > JoPP) as opposed to "gold" open access (where you cough up $2-3000 to > Elsevier etc PER ARTICLE to make it free for all). Hi again, Just spoke to Vasilis and he suggests to release the second part on July 2015. And if we do it this way, then there's no need to plan a different JoPP issue. What do you think? Best, -G. Meanwhile you, Vasilis, and whoever put out a CFP for "P2P and the State, Part II: title", inviting critical evaluations of this relationship, and explaining that this is a follow-up to Part I. For maximum impact the CFP for Part II could be disseminated straight after the release of Part I. This may be a bit short to edit an issue though. Hello Mathieu, Sounds good! Let's release the 1st part on Sep 2014! I'm not sure when we should release part 2, but going for Jan 2016 is very reasonable (given that we have to allow for some time to elapse so as to be able to evaluate the implementation of the policies put forward in part 1). Let me discuss it with Vasilis and I'll get back to you. Best, -G.
