Hi Mathieu, hi all, First of all, I'd like to thank all list members who responded to our call for reviewers. We will contact you over the coming weeks (off-list) to coordinate the review process. As for your questions, see inline. Vasilis and I talked about it a few days ago and we decided that this is going to be the one and only JoPP issue on the FLOK papers. Of course, should there be an active interest in doing a follow-up issue, we're always willing to reconsider our view. JoPP special issue on policy-making for a commons-based society
by george dafermos 19 Jul '14

19 Jul '14

Dear friends and colleagues, I'm writing to inform you about the 'development status' of the JoPP special issue on the FLOK policy proposals. According to our original time-plan, the FLOK policy papers, which were the epicentre of the 'Buen Conocer summit' that we organised in Quito at the end of May, were to be revised and submitted to JoPP by June 31. However, the scope of the revisions turned out to be much larger than was originally anticipated. As a result, about half of the papers are still being revised. And so, Vasilis and I decided it would make sense to extend the deadline for the submission of manuscripts to Sep. 30. Consequently, the time-planning of the issue would have to be modified as follows: - deadline for the submission of papers: Sep 30 (was June 30) - end of peer review process: Nov. 30 (was Aug 30) - submission of revised papers: Dec. 30 (was Oct 30) - issue goes live on the web: Feb 2015 (was Dec. 2014) We're hoping this 'deviation' does not conflict with the planning of other JoPP issues. So, please let us know if you have any objections to the above time-plan. On a related note, we're looking for reviewers, so it'd be great if list members could help. The list of papers is as follows: 1. open educational resources 2. open science 3. open/free culture 4. biodiversity 5. sustainable agriculture 6. open, distributed manufacturing 7. distributed energy 8. public policy for a partner state 9. public policy for a social economy 10. social knowledge and the social economy 11. ICT & open government 12. free hardware 13. free software 14. connectivity 15. Ancestral knowledge 16. Territorial organisation of the knowledge economy So, if you're interested in reviewing any of the above papers, please drop me a line. Best, -G.

Mathieu, Thanks for the introduction. Dear all, I am honored to be part of the editorial board and look forward to working with you all and growing the community. I am an Associate Professor in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University, an Affiliated Faculty of the Kinsey Institute, and a Faculty Fellow at the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics. I co-direct the Cultural Research In Technology (CRIT) Group ( http://crit.soic.indiana.edu/) at Indiana University. My research centers on a network of concepts of interest to both feminists and Human Computer Interaction (HCI), including feminist research methodologies, human sexuality, embodiment, marginality, collective creativity, and everyday aesthetics. Recent work has focused on exploring the intersections between HCI's rising interest in social change and feminist social science, critical design, material interactions, the role of everyday life, including craft and DIY, in contemporary digital interaction, and the application of critical and cultural theories for developing concept-driven design strategies. I am also on the editorial board of the journal Interacting with Computers ( http://iwc.oxfordjournals.org/) and co-edited the special issue for “Feminism and HCI: New Perspectives” ( http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/09535438/23/5) of the same journal. Additionally, I co-author Humanistic HCI in the Synthesis Lectures on Human-Centered Informatics (Morgan & Claypool Publishers, due out spring 2015) and co-edit Critical Theory and Interaction Design (MIT Press, due out spring 2015). Once again, thank you for inviting me to be part of the editorial board of JoPP and I look forward to many fruitful collaborations. reviewer needed asap
by maxigas 12 Jun '14

12 Jun '14

Dear joppers, We have a paper which is lagging behind in the review process due to several reviewers having dropped out. So we need a reviewer for it who can come back to us with the review in a few days. Anybody feels like they have enough competence and time to help us with this? I paste the abstract of the paper below and please contact me privately for the draft paper itself. Thanks much, maxigas ---------------------------------------------------------------- Shared Machine Shops as Real-life Laboratories Our paper applies the concept of real-life experiments and real-life laboratories to shared machine shops. These workshops provide niches for established experimental modes of learning research that and expand the development scope which of are predominantly embedded in professional contexts of industry or science. Shared machine shops provide infrastructures for novel forms of collaboration as well as self-selected participation of heterogeneous actors. We will illustrate our concept with two examples of innovations in shared machined shops: low-cost-prosthesis and open hardware 3D printers. We will show that shared machine shops embody significant properties of a reflexive innovation society and can be considered as real experiments in themselves in which new forms of inclusion, collaboration and openness are tested. ---------------------------------------------------------------- -- maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 http://research.metatron.ai/ People the switches!

Introduction and a proposal for a special issue!
by Sophie Toupin, Ms. 04 Jun '14

04 Jun '14

Dear all, First of all, thanks Johan for looping me in to the Journal of Peer Production. Glad to be part of this great endeavor! My name is Sophie. I am currently working for Media@McGill, a hub for research, scholarship and public outreach on media, technology and culture at McGill University in Montreal. I am also an activist involved in a variety of projects locally and internationally. As a case in point, here is a project I am working on: https://transhackfeminist.noblogs.org/ My current research interests focus on feminist practices within social movements in addition to feminist, queer and trans hacker culture. I'd be keen to spearhead (with one or two other editors) a special issue of the Journal of Peer Production on the broad topic of feminism and peer production. I believe it could be of value to have an issue on such topic as it would continue to enrich the debate on peer production and shed light on particular feminist practices. I'd be happy to hear what people on this list think about this idea. Looking forward to hearing from you, All the best Sophie

Peer production, disruption and the law edition update
by Angela Daly 26 May '14

26 May '14

Hello everyone, Time for an update on how our special edition of JoPP is going. So far we have received four papers for this edition and have given another 3 papers an extension so we should have all of them in the next week or so. The titles of the papers are: - ‘Cultures of sharing in 3D printing: what can we learn from the license choices of Thingiverse users?’ - ‘Disrupting Law: The prospects for government regulation of emerging technology’ - ‘Peer-to-peer as a design principle for law’ - ‘Creative-Destruction in Internet Architecture: The subversive potential of mesh networking’, - ‘Manufacturing household governance: additive manufacture and the social factory’ - ‘Collaborative activities in the digital environment: reflections on authorship, authority and voice’ .- ‘Appropriation, power imbalance and peer production in music’ We will be sending the papers out for review once we have received all of them. If you are interested in reviewing one of the papers listed, please email me or Steve off-list and let us know. We are very pleased with the quality and content of the articles we have received so far and are confident that this is going to be a great issue when it comes out around December. Angela
