Update: JoPP Special Issue on "Feminism and (un)Hacking"
by Shaowen Bardzell 28 Sep '14

28 Sep '14

Hi all, I am writing to update you all on the special issue of "Feminism and (un)Hacking" for the Journal of Peer Production: (1) The special issue is co-edited by Shaowen Bardzell (Indiana University, USA), Lilly Nguyen (UC-Irvine, USA), and Sophie Toupin (McGill University, Canada). (2) It's our understanding after chatting with Mathieu and Johan that the CFP for the special issue (http://peerproduction.net/feminism-and-unhacking/) received the most abstracts in the history of JoPP, and we are very excited about the response from the community. (3) The author notifications for the abstracts were sent out over the weekend. (4) For the authors who have been invited to write the full papers, the deadline for submission is January 31, 2015. (5) The deadlines for the two rounds of peer reviews are scheduled in mid March and mid May of 2015. Each paper will receive 3 reviews in each round. (6) The special issue is tentatively scheduled for publication in July of 2015. (7) If you wish to contact the special issue editors, you can reach us by writing to the "femhack(a)peerproduction.net" email alias. That's it for now, and let us know if you have any questions! Hi Welcome to Peter! Did anyone else get the message below? Thanks for confirming, cheers Mathieu ? ________________________________ From: Dr. Peter Troxler <trox(a)fabfolk.com> Sent: Friday, August 29, 2014 17:25 To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Cc: Mathieu ONeil; maxigas Subject: Fwd: [JoPP-Public] testing my subscription Apologies, list, this is basically a test if my postings still get rejected. If not, I use the occasion to introduce me briefly - I proposed the special issue on Shared Machine Shops just over a year ago to JoPP and became its editor (together with maxigas). I've been working with, in, for and about Fab Labs the past 7 years. Before I did various things from factory automation in the 90s to AI/knowledge management in the 00s with a background in industrial engineering and industrial psychology. Shared Machine Shops release pushed to September
by maxigas 26 Aug '14

26 Aug '14

hi, this is to let you know that we pushed the going live date for issue 5 on Shared Machine Shops to mid September for both practical and visibility reasons. With visibility we mean: wait until academics are back and beyond their first weeks of term and receptive to input from outwith the school. Practically (for all prospective editors), the platform and set-up requires some serious pre-flight work on the final texts which should not be underestimated… we’ll be reporting back on our approach on completion. trox & maxigas

JoPP special issue: Peer production, disruption and the law - call for debates, essays and interviews
by Angela Daly 25 Aug '14

25 Aug '14

Dear all, We are issuing a second call for shorter pieces for the law special edition, please see below. Thanks, Angela -------------------------------- Peer production, disruption and the law - call for debates, essays and interviews We are now inviting contributions to this special edition of the Journal of Peer Production in the form of short essays of between 1000 and 3000 words to complement the longer peer reviewed articles that will appear in this edition of the journal, due to be published in December 2014 The contributions can be testimonies, working papers and critical essays by researchers and practitioners. Debates are essays by several authors expressing clearly contrasting viewpoints about a relevant issue. The deadline for these contributions is 24 October 2014 and should be sent to disruptlawissue(a)peerproduction.net. The contributions will be reviewed by the editors - Steve Collins (Macquarie) and Angela Daly (Swinburne/European University Institute) - and so will not be peer-reviewed. Please see here for more details on JoPP submissions and style: http://peerproduction.net/about/submissions/ Special edition description The disruption caused by new technologies and non-conventional methods of organisation have posed challenges for the law, confronting regulators with the need to balance justice with powerful interests. Experience from the “disruptions” of the late 20th century has shown that the response from incumbent industries can lead to a period of intense litigation and lobbying for laws that will maintain the status quo. For example, following its “Napster moment”, the music industry fought to maintain its grip on distribution channels through increased copyright enforcement and the longer copyright terms it managed to extract from the legislative process. The newspaper industry has similarly seen its historical revenue stream of classified ads disrupted by more efficient online listings, and responded to its own failure to capitalise on online advertising by launching legal campaigns against Google News in various European countries. Though the law as it stands may not be well-equipped to deal with disruptive episodes, the technological innovations of the last twenty years have created an environment that generates disruption. The Internet, the Web and networked personal computers have converged into the ubiquitous post-PC media device, leaving twentieth century paradigms of production, consumption and distribution under considerable threat. The latest technology to be added to this group of disruptive innovations may be 3D printing, which in recent times has become increasingly available and accessible to users in developed economies, whilst the manufacturing capacity of 3D printers has dramatically grown. Although current offerings on the market are far from a Star Trek-like “replicator”, the spectre of disruption has once again arrived, with the prospect of 3D printed guns inspiring a moral panic and raising questions of gun control, regulation, jurisdiction and effective control. In addition, 3D printing raises a number of issues regarding intellectual property, going far beyond the copyright problems that file-sharing brought about due to its production of physical objects. This special issue of the Journal of Peer Production calls for contributions that deal with the intersection of peer production, disruptive technologies and the law. Potential topics include, but are not restricted to: - The threat posed by peer production to legacy industries - The regulation of disruptive technologies through the rule of law or embedded rights management - Lobbying strategies of incumbent players to stymie disruptive technologies - Emergent economies or practices as a result of disruptive technologies - Extra-legal norm formation in peer production communities around disruptive technologies - Historical perspectives on the legal status of collaborative projects - Critical legal approaches to technology, disruption and peer production - The role and ability of the law (which differs across jurisdictions) in regulating autonomous production - The resilience of law in the face of social and technological change - The theories and assumptions which continue to underpin laws rendered obsolete by social and technological change

JoPP article word limits
by Steve Collins 21 Aug '14

21 Aug '14

Hi All Quick question about article word lengths. Where should we draw the line? Angela and I have received a paper that's in excess of 18,000 words. The authors have questioned our request to cut it down stating that it would seriously undermine their article. What does the list think? thx steve -- *Dr Steve Collins* Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Program Director / BA-Media / Bachelor Marketing and Media Department of Media, Music, Communication & Cultural Studies Macquarie University P: (02) 9850 2165 W: http://bit.ly/122QivW L: Y3A 191D
