Interference conference in Amsterdam in August
by george dafermos 15 Apr '14

15 Apr '14

hello JoPP-ers! this might be of interest to list members: ========================== Call for Papers Interference, n: 1. preventing (a process or activity) from continuing or being carried out properly. 2. the combination of two or more electromagnetic waveforms to form a resultant wave in which the displacement is either reinforced or cancelled. Interference is a gathering of people, perspectives, theories, and actions that share a critical approach to society and technology. It will take place at the Binnenpret in Amsterdam, NL from 15th to the 17th of August 2014. It will be a space where we can meet, debate, share, learn, and find our affinities and oppositions. Interference is not a hacker conference. From a threat to the so-called national security, hacking has become an instrument for reinforcing the status quo. Fed up with yet another recuperation, the aim is to re/contextualize hacking as a conflictual praxis and release it from its technofetishist boundaries. Bypassing the cultural filters, Interference wants to take the technical expertise of the hacking scene out of its isolation to place it within the broader perspective of the societal structures it shapes and is part of. The gathering comes as a response to the lack of a common ground for confrontation and discussion over themes like hacking, technology and politics that could break out of the existing containers and roles for such concepts and practices. Interference does not wish to define itself. Interference challenges hacker's identity, the internal dynamics of hackerculture and its ethical values. It undermines given identities and rejects given definitions. Interference is a hacking event from an anarchist perspective: it doesn't seek for uniformity on the level of skills or interests, but rather focuses on a shared basis of intuitive resistance and critical attitude towards the techno-social apparatus. Interference is three days of exploring modes of combining theory and practice, depunctualization, breaking and (re)inventing systems and networks, and playing with the art and politics of everyday life. Topics may or may not include hacking shenanigans, spectacle and communication guerrilla, temporary autonomous zones, refuting the cybernetic hypothesis, exterminating "social media experts", unraveling the illusions of liberating technologies, ruining the creative capitalism joke, exposing hidden- & self- censorship, and refusing the binarity of gender, life, and logic. Interference welcomes discordians, intervention artists, artificial lifeforms, anarchist militants, digital alchemists, oppressed droids, luddite hackers and critical engineers to diverge from the existent, dance with fire-spitting robots, hack the urban environment, break locks, perform ternary voodoo, decentralise and disconnect networks, build botnets, and party all night. The event is intended to be as self-organised as possible which means you are invited to contribute on your own initiative with your skills and interests. Bring your talk, workshop, debate, performance, opinion, installation, project, critique, the things you're interested in, the things you want to discuss. Please send a (brief) abstract for your proposal before June 15 via e-mail to interference [at] puscii.nl. Updates and more information can be found on http://interference.io ==========================

JoPP + FSCONS Conference
by Johan Söderberg 10 Apr '14

10 Apr '14

Hi everyone, I am probing the terrain for organising a JoPP-conference together with FSCONS (Free Software Conference and Nordic Summit). FSCONS is a yearly event with 200-300 participants, and with a strong track record of mixing technical presentations with visionary and political debates about all things relating to hacking. It is as close as one gets in the lineage of Oekonux-conference series. The idea is that we co-organise a JoPP-track in connection with FSCONS, which would give us an occasion to meet physically and make our journal known among an audience of socially-politically interested tech-geeks. Let me know if you would like to come and/or to present. If there is a reasonable amount of interest, I proceed with the planning of our part of the event. https://fscons.org/2013/ Göteborg, Fri. 31 Oct. - Sun. 2 Nov., 2014 /Johan

progress of the special issue on shared machine shops
by maxigas 06 Apr '14

06 Apr '14

Dear joppers, this is maxigas and Peter Troxler reporting on the progress of the special issue on shared machine shops. numbers! -------- * received 20 abstracts * commissioned 10 papers in a few cases we did not accept or reject abstracts but asked authors to gather 'more intellectual courage and look at how your data goes beyond “illustrating the theory”, because it is based on the contradictions that the theory can be strengthened and wherefrom it receives its political value'. in the long run this gesture did not change much. after the first round of peer reviews we have the following: * 4 papers minor revisions * 3 papers major revisions * 3 papers papers for which we discourage publication because they are not relevant or would require too much effort to revise properly and fix all issues the relevant papers are now being reworked by the authors. we also plan a comments section with a more broad and engaged look at shared machine shops, concentrating on controvertial moments in their historical trajectory. this is much more fluid yet but currently there are four texts in preparation for this although we are not sure we will receive the last: * Troxler on "how fablabs ran out of control" of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms * maxigas on relations to state (authorities) and capital (security industry) of hackerspaces * bron (pseudonym) on their experience between fablabs, hacklabs and hackerspaces * a senior organiser of an early fablab commenting on the contents of the issue comments! --------- three reviews were written for each paper: 1. senior reviewer with relevant expertise in the field 2. one of the issue editors 3. an author of another paper considered in the same process the last point was quite experimental, giving a totally new meaning to the term "peer review"... and now we can say that the outcome of the experiment was very positive! often the best quality and most thorough reviews came from these authors. on the other hand we had mixed experience with senior reviewers. of course in the jopp spirit all drafts and reviews will be published and in cases where the reviewers agreed their names will be included too. all in all we are happy with the material, with critical and strategic points addressed in almost all papers, although the reflection on political economy is not very wide spread. we are also learning a lot about what other researchers are doing, which is the literature on the topic, and what is happening in shared machine workshops around the world. deadlines! ---------- finally, we are happy to say that we are more or less on time according to the schedule negotionated earlier when we embarked on this project: * January 31 ― deadline for authors * Febuary 10 ― papers sent to reviewers * March 23 ― reviews due * March 31 ― reviews sent to authors ← WE ARE HERE! * April 30 ― revised papers due * May 23 ― second review due * June 1 ― decision on publication * early July ― publication of special issue (online / print) regarding the last point: we plan to release during the The 10th International Fab Lab Conference, Barcelona, 2-8 July 2014. https://www.fab10.org/en/home our research shows that physical fabrication tools are fashionable nowadays, so we plan to release limited edition hardcopies of JoPP! interactive! ------------ please feel free to ask here or if you want then in private mail to fablabissue(a)peerproduction.net happy hacking, -- maxigas, kiberpunk FA00 8129 13E9 2617 C614 0901 7879 63BC 287E D166 http://research.metatron.ai/ Computers are just carefully organised sand.

12th March - P2Pvalue: Launch & Data Jam of the Directory of Commons Based Peer Production
by Mayo Fuster Morell 11 Mar '14

11 Mar '14

Hoping this activity is of interest of people of this list. Thank you to help spread the word! Mayo (ENGLISH, CATALAN, SPANISH) Launch and Data Jam of the P2Pvalue Directory of Commons Based Peer Production Join us Wednesday March 12th for the launch and Data Jam (hackathon) of the P2Pvalue Directory of Commons Based Peer Production Commons Based Peer Production (CBPP) means collaborative production and sharing of resources among peers under commons settings. From the initial cases, such as Wikipedia and FLOSS, recently there has been an expansion to other areas of activity, such as citizen science, product design, management of common spaces and open data sources. The mission of the Directory of Commons Based Peer Production is mapping the diffusion and hybridization of peer production by collecting and typifying digital platforms or projects that are Commons Based Peer Productions (CBPP). The directory currently holds more than 300 cases of CBPP such as platforms for collective research, citizen journalism, peer to peer financing, and hackerspaces. Projects that produce software, hardware, texts, images, videos, music or sounds, collaborative research projects that give access to the data, and produce resources for public use. The directory serves as a valuable tool for anyone interested on CBPP such as "commoners", "prosumers" or researchers. It also aims to give visibility to the CBPP and support the networking among CBPP projects. The directory itself is based on collaborative production. Join the collaborative mapping of CBPP: Reuse and remix the data, insert new cases, send your feedback on the directory design, etc. The data contributed to the directory is published with an open license and accessible through our API or for downloaded in various formats. To celebrate the launch we will be hosting a P2Pvalue Data Jam 12th March 2014, a collective effort to populate the directory and document as many examples of CBPP as possible. Additionally, on the day we will be having a live streamed program with introduction to the P2Pvalue project, and with instruction on how to use the directory and discussion around CBPP issues. Starting at 11:30 am (+1 GMT), Mayo Fuster Morell (IGOPnet.cc) will talk about the P2Pvalue research on delimitation criteria of CBPP and the conditions that favor CBPP. (12:34h) David Rozas (University of Surrey) will explain the directory from a technical perspective. (13:45h) Antonio Tenorio (UCM) will present Kune, a decentralized platform also resulting from the P2Pvalue project. (17h) There will be presentations of cases such as Guifi.net (by Jaume Barcelo and Pedro) and (18h) Goteo.org (by Maria G. Perulero). Finally (19h), there will be a discussion group on "Analyzing value in CBPP experiences" moderated by Mayo Fuster Morell and with interventions by Michel Bauwens (P2PFoundation), Marco Berlinguer (IGOPnet.cc) and Marcos García (Medialab Prado). I've got no objections to the issue coming out at the same time as the law/disruption issue. It'd be good to check with Angela though. cheers steve -- *Dr Steve Collins* Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Program Director / BA-Media / Bachelor Marketing and Media Department of Media, Music, Communication & Cultural Studies Macquarie University P: (02) 9850 2165 W: http://bit.ly/122QivW L: Y3A 191D On 11 March 2014 22:00, <jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org> wrote: > Send JoPP-Public mailing list submissions to > jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > jopp-public-owner(a)lists.ourproject.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of JoPP-Public digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. So, unless the editors of the law issue have any objections, we are going to release the special issue on 'policy proposals for a society of the commons' in Dec 2014 (rather than in Sep 2014, as originally planned). JoPP Special Issue on 'Policy recommendations for a P2P/commons-based society'
by george dafermos 07 Mar '14

Dear friends, There is something I'd like to ask you: Would it be a problem if we postpone the release of the special issue of JoPP on 'Policy recommendations for a society of the commons' for 3 months? The rationale for proposing this delay is that we (meaning the FLOK Society Project) are organising a summit in Quito in the end of May with the aim of reviewing and elaborating on the policy papers, so we thought it is a good idea to change the deadline for submissions from March 31 to June 31 so as to be able to incorporate the feedback given us at the summit. So, if we do that, the time-frame will have to be modified as follows: -deadline for the submission of papers: June 31 (instead of March 31) -end of review process: Aug 31 (instead of May 31) -deadline for re-submission of revised papers: Oct 31 (instead of July 31) -special issue goes live on the web: Dec (instead of Sep) So, my question is, does anyone object to the proposed change in the time-planning of the special issue? Best, -G.

Peer production and open collaboration: Revisiting closure, stabilisation and black boxing through unfinished artefacts
by Johan Söderberg 13 Feb '14

We invite you to submit an abstract to our session on the relevance of peer production, open collaboration and hacking to Science and Technology Studies. The panel is organised for the 4S/ESOCITE conference in Buenos Aires, 20-23 August 2014. You are welcome to get in touch with us to discuss abstracts informally. Deadline: March 3 2014 Conference website: http://www.4sonline.org/meeting ---- Peer production and open collaboration: Revisiting closure, stabilisation and black boxing through unfinished artefacts maxigas and Eduard Aibar This panel seeks to bring together scholars studying peer production processes through STS lenses and concepts. Peer production is a form of network-based voluntary cooperation aimed at contributing to a commons, epitomised by the Linux kernel and Wikipedia and more recently applied to hardware. Case studies of peer production projects can inspire new theoretical developments within STS and simultaneously engender insights on emerging socio-technical ensembles. Peer producers work a lot to fend off stabilisation, building functional parts (like loose couplings and Application Programming Interfaces) into technologies and organisations which serve to prevent closure. While these mechanisms for openness do stabilise, the resulting technologies are not exactly black boxes whose functional composition is rendered inaccessible to gaze, discourse and engineering. They can be understood as “unfinished artefacts”. Moreover, shared machine workshops manifest a model which goes against the received wisdom of trade-offs between “professional” expertise and radically open “amateur” contributions. Such open organisational architectures blend in three functions traditionally separate in modern institutions: education, research and production. In this context citizen participation in technological issues is mainly achieved by practical interventions into research and development. We call for contributors who explore peer production specific projects from a wide range of STS perspectives. One is how stabilisation, closure and black boxing are themselves socially constructed, deconstructed and reconfigured in this arena. Another is the broader structural implications of peer production, since it is usually read as an emerging mode of production with disruptive consequences. Finally, since peer production is increasingly used in a wide range of settings (software development, knowledge production, infrastructure building or farming), the way it is re-enacted and appropriated by new actors can also be of interest to scholars with various theoretical backgrounds. With best wishes, Annalisa Murgia & Maurizio Teli — Call for abstracts V Ethnography and Qualitative Research Conference. Bergamo, Italy 5-7 June 2014 website: http://www.etnografiaricercaqualitativa.it/?p=13 * * *It’s a free work… When working relations become passionate* Convenors:/ Annalisa Murgia/ (Department of Sociology and Social Research of the University of Trento) & /Maurizio Teli/ (Fondazione <ahref, Trento) In contemporary knowledge society, both creativity and the ability to put into play personal resources are recognized as precious and valuable competences. With this workshop, we want to stimulate a reflection within the debate on free work (Beverungen et al. 2013; Chicchi et al. 2013), starting with the ambivalent meaning of the word free, referring both to the absence of a price and to the domain of freedom. We invite to elaborate on the double face of contemporary work: on one side, it is characterized by low or absent wages, it is so intrusive to become totalizing; on the other side, it is often based on informal registers, on subjects’ desire for freedom, and on the confusion between free time and working time. Drawing upon the contribution on free software development by the anthropologist Christopher Kelty (2008), we can frame this social phenomenon as the expansion of voluntary activities that intertwine with work activities in many forms. What is common among software developers – and among others who describe their work primarily as a passion – is not only the individual expression of creativity, but also the translation of the playful-affective dimension in recursive processes of relation, processes that bring to a preoccupation for the institutional, technological, political and economical conditions which the particular community and its productive activities are based on. These are, therefore, working experiences (paid or unpaid) in which the subjects’ identification and self-expression are conveyed both by putting life itself at work (Morini e Fumagalli 2010; Fleming 2012) and by questioning the social relations within which work is realised (Borghi et al. 2011). The proposed subject of analysis is as wide as heterogeneous, and it includes knowledge work, the creative industries and high tech production chains, emotional and caring work, all sharing the ambivalences of free work. What are the characteristics of the activities wherein subjects invest their affections and desires and that become incorporated by the rhetoric of work as a mission? If, on one side, free work makes economically valuable free expert activities, can it allow the emergence of new forms of collective action? How can we understand the main traits of such phenomenon, in particular from a methodological perspective?
