Hi Nicolas Well, personally I think it's a splendid idea. :-) Once the papers are finalised, it would be great if you could send us a summary of the content and we can put some links from our (pretty-soon-to-be-established) "resources" page - thanks! I won't be able to comment on the specific papers or translations as my Spanish is too rudimentary, but maybe another participant in JoPP can have a look? Franco, Mayo, what do you say? cheers Mathieu On 03/05/13, Nicolás Reynolds <fauno(a)endefensadelsl.org> wrote: > Hi, I just wanted to comment we're translating some of the articles from > JoPP into spanish and that we plan to publish them at En Defensa del > Software Libre site[0] and probably on paper. > > You can find the work in progress at our git repositories[1][2]. > > En Defensa del Software Libre is sort of a journal where we publish > articles on Free Software, Free Culture and now Peer Production :) > > > Please let us know what you think. > > [0]: http://endefensadelsl.org > [1]: http://endefensadelsl.org/git/endefensadelsl.org.git/ > [2]: https://github.com/edsl/endefensadelsl.org > > -- **** Dr Mathieu O'Neil Associate Professor, HDEA-TCS, Université Paris Sorbonne 1 rue Victor Cousin 75230 Paris cedex 05, France http://www.paris-sorbonne.fr/l-universite/nos-enseignants-chercheurs/articl… Adjunct Research Fellow, ADSRI, The Australian National University Coombs Building (#9) Canberra ACT 0200, Australia https://researchers.anu.edu.au/researchers/o-neil-m

Hi, I just wanted to comment we're translating some of the articles from JoPP into spanish and that we plan to publish them at En Defensa del Software Libre site[0] and probably on paper. You can find the work in progress at our git repositories[1][2]. En Defensa del Software Libre is sort of a journal where we publish articles on Free Software, Free Culture and now Peer Production :) Please let us know what you think. Future issues / projects update
by Mathieu ONeil 16 Feb '13

16 Feb '13

Hi all The next two issues are accounted for (see updates below). After that so far its maybe piracy (coordinated by Swedish contacts of Johan) and organisation (coordinated by Dariusz, Mathieu, Mayo). We need some other suggestions - it is very open... Re side projects, we need to add the resources page on the site with possible features being hackerspaces (no-one interested in driving that one yet), selection of critical / social science open access journals (I will start that one when I have more time), link to / text about peerproduction.surveys project (ditto). Any other suggestions welcome also! cheers Mathieu **** FLOSS issue (release: June / July 2013)We are collecting reviews for the six full papers we got, we were able to get the opening piece for the debate section by Christopher Kelty, and we are now waiting for the second piece by Judith Simon (the Debate will be closed by David Hakken) The reviews are expected in these days, so next week or so we will be able to give you a clear picture Thanks to all of you who are involved in the review process :) Maurizio **** Value and currency issue (release: December 2013 / January 2014) we have received 11 submissions and we still expect one or two. about half look pretty strong. i have also organised an interview with bill maurer - a kind of money anthropologist who also has a piece on bitcoin coming. we hope to get one more interview. we might also do a conference report for the upcoming bitcoin event in vienna, but not sure if anyone is going to it yet! so that's about it. going well! nate -- ****

Hi George, all OK - here's what we could add to the mix though: "we think these social science - whatever (OA) journals are really good / interesting / etc." Just because a journal is OA does not mean we want to read it or is relevant to our interests. Fibreculture (hi Andrew!) mainly connect to media / communications journals and projects for example cheers Mathieu On 01/24/13, george dafermos <georgedafermos(a)gmail.com> wrote: > easy, you can browse by subject: the social sciences list is here > (with a few hundred entries): > http://www.doaj.org/doaj?func=subject&cpid=87&uiLanguage=en > > in specific: > Anthropology (96 journals) > Education (567 journals) > Ethnology (29 journals) > Gender Studies (35 journals) > Library and Information Science (137 journals) > Media and communication (107 journals) > Psychology (179 journals) > Social Sciences (325 journals) > Sociology (151 journals) > Sports Science (66 journals) > > > > > On Thu, Jan 24, 2013 at 9:37 PM, Mathieu ONeil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> wrote: > > Hi George, Dariusz > > > > True, but the DOAJ list has everything - I was thinking of social science I > > guess...? > > > > cheers > > > > Mathieu > > > > On 01/24/13, george dafermos <georgedafermos(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > > > good idea. > > > > and a list is available through the www.doaj.org [directory of open > > access journals] website: it lists 8599 journals! > > > > x, > > g. > > > > > > > > > > On Thu, Jan 24, 2013 at 8:16 PM, Mathieu ONeil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> > > wrote: > >> Hi all > >> > >> As everyone is aware there has been a renewed focus on open access > >> following > >> the suicide of activist A. open access journals
by Mathieu ONeil 24 Jan '13

24 Jan '13

Hi all As everyone is aware there has been a renewed focus on open access following the suicide of activist A. Swartz. A lot of US academics are now committing to only publishing in open access journals. For example see the following extract from a blog post: What I haven’t seen so far is research communities putting together a list of Open Access journals to focus their publication efforts on. If enough of us show preference for or entirely restrict our publishing efforts to open access journals then this could shift the balance of prestige as well. Imagine if open access journals were the venues for the very best, most novel, most methodologically sound and innovative, most well expressed work by virtue of the intense competition to get published in them? http://ethnographymatters.net/2013/01/17/goopenaccess-for-the-ethnography-m… Maybe we could put such as list together and include it on the site as a resource? Just a thought, cheers Mathieu --

2013
by Mathieu ONeil 08 Jan '13

Hi all Best wishes for 2013. Pretty swamped right now with different commitments so I'll keep this short. The registration for the journal URL had to be renewed. Franco fronted the money and Nate and Maurizio then donated some cash to the P2P Foundation. @Franco: does this cover your costs? @all: do we need to have a discussion about some kind of long-term solution so we don't need to do this every year? (if that is possible) Other news: -This month Johan published an article debating / criticising the background of hardware hacking / makers in Le monde diplomatique (in French); not sure if it will be translated? -It looks as if Christian Fuchs' (and others) work to bring Marx into the mainstream of Internet / communication studies is starting to pay off - I've never heard of the editors for the following CFP but they are all US-based and it is not that common (I think) for US researchers in this field to make these kinds of connections... cheers Mathieu ---------- Forwarded message ---------- THE INFORMATION SOCIETY (TIS) CFP: Monetization of User-Generated Content — Marx revisited Forum Editors: Jennifer Proffitt, School of Communication, Florida State University Hamid Ekbia, School of Library and Information Science, Indiana University, Bloomington Stephen McDowell, School of Communication, Florida State University Two TIS articles, Fuchs (2010) and Arvidsson & Colleoni (2012), which develops a critique of the former, have generated considerable debate, including a response from Fuchs (2012), regarding fundamental questions about the core processes of value creation and social and economic organization in contemporary societies. To further this conversation, we invite 4000- 5000 word Perspective essays, which are published at the discretion of the guest editors / editor, and should address one or more of the following questions the Fuchs and Arvidsson & Colleoni debate problematizes: * Is the production of user-generated content a form of labor? Or, should it be re-thought as an affective investment? Or something else? * Do the theory and concepts that are part of a labor theory of value limit our understanding of user-generated content? Should we choose a different point of departure for our theoretical endeavors? * Is the Marxist notion of commodity an appropriate analytic for understanding appropriation of value in the case of user-generated content? Or, should it be de-centered from such an analysis? * Is the notion of “labor time” relevant to the production of user-generated content? * How can Marxist and historical-critical perspectives engage with the new organization of information economies and information societies? * Is it appropriate to extend Dallas Smythe’s notion of “audience work,” which he developed in 1970s when broadcasting was the dominant mode, to the Internet world? What are the problematics of extending “old” theories to “new” technologies? The Perspective essays should have layers of thought that take the thinking beyond Fuchs and Arvidsson & Colleoni. Approximately half of the essay should be devoted to a reflection on / critique of these writings and the ensuing debate, and the remaining half should extend / add to the theoretical foundations of the debate. Interested authors are invited to email an abstract (no longer than 500 words) to Jennifer Proffitt (email: jproffitt(a)fsu.edu) by March 1, 2013. Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit their Perspective essays by July 1, 2013.
