Hi Jarkko, all First your project sounds v. interesting, maybe we could feature an interview or a self-description of your background, goals, results, hopes etc in a future issue of JoPP? Second it appears that because this fellow S. Murphey [who made the video on 3D printing mentioned below] confused your project Statistical Studies of Peer Production [http://surveys.peerproduction.net] with our own Journal of Peer Production [http://peerproduction.net] we are now being credited with your work. See this piece as a recent ex. but its all over the web. http://boingboing.net/2012/08/15/visualzing-3d-printing-statist.html I think one of us should ask S. Murphey to correct his error. Maybe we should also include a sentence in the description of our respective projects explaining that we are not the other? What do others think? cheers Mathieu On 07/24/12, jarkko moilanen <jarkko.moilanen(a)uta.fi> wrote: > Hi, > > ti, 2012-07-24 kello 11:53 +0100, Athina Karatzogianni kirjoitti: > > Hi guys, great stuff!!! congrats. > > > > > > I had the following email from Stephen Murphey > > <stephen(a)stephenmurphey.com> > > whoever is interested can contact him directly perhaps he is a bit > > confused about my involvement but i wont hold that against him > > > > ------------------ > > Dr, Karatzogianni, > > > > I recently created a short video based on the 3D printer community > > Survey you released > > > > http://stephenmurphey.com/survey-on-the-3d-printer-community/ > > > > I thought as an editor of the website, you might find it interesting. > > If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. > > > > This is awesome for us who develop and maintain Statistical Studies of > Peer Production (http://surveys.peerproduction.net/) site since this > video is made out of results gathered by our toolset/survey :). Hi all I would like to sponsor a new member of the editorial board: Dariusz Jemielniak. Darius, Mayo have been discussing a re-boot of the dormant CFP for a special issue on p2p and organisation (more on that later). @Dariusz: it would be great if you could briefly introduce yourself and your research interests to the group. cheers, Mathieu

Hi Johan I subscribe to AIR, ICT&Society and CITASA amongst others and have not seen the announcement for issue 2 on any of them yet. If this persists I think we can say have a problem. Normally on CITASA moderation takes a few hours though if the mods are in the US you have to allow for time difference... though if you posted Monday it should have come out by now? cheers Mathieu On 07/24/12, Johan Söderberg <johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se> wrote: > Hi all > > >Congratulations to Johan and Alessandro for what looks like a really fantastic issue - I'm not just saying that, the >articles all look really interesting; looking forward to reading them on the beach! ;-)cheers > > >ps. Hi Everyone Thanks to Mathieu for sponsoring me to be part of the journal. I'll just give a brief introduction to my research interests. The majority of my work has concerned copyright law, the digital environment (file-sharing, uses of digital media), creativity (especially in music) and technology, and the current state of play in the music industry. I'm currently catching up on the journal to-date, getting a feel for its scope. Obviously, I'm happy to review any incoming articles in these areas as well those that might tackle more broad ranging production/communications/law issues. I'm a founding member of the (relatively recently formed) Interactive Media Institute at Macquarie University and I'll be promoting the journal through it and various other avenues. cheers Steve --* Dr Steve Collins* Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Program Director Interactivity & Games Department of Media, Music, Communication & Cultural Studies Macquarie University P: (02) 9850 2165 W: http://www.mmccs.mq.edu.au/stevecollins L: Y3A 191D

issue #2 JoPP press release

Bio/Hardware Hacking”: a new special issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published - http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-2/ During the past two decades, hacking has chiefly been associated with software and computers. This is changing with the surge of synthetic biology, fablabs and hackerspaces, all of which suggests the wider diffusion of hacking practices and hacker politics. Hardware development and biological science are about to be infused with the same kind of contestations and contradictions that already characterize software hacking. This is because hackers are not simply innovating new technology, but are at the same time discovering new ways of engaging with the world. The issue highlights how hacking practices are inscribed in and shaped by the cultural and political contexts in which the hackers find themselves, with implications for the ways hacker politics are framed. The special issue is curated by Alessandro Delfanti and Johan Söderberg. It includes four research papers and two invited comments: Denisa Kera, Hackerspaces and DIYbio in Asia: Connecting Science and Community with Open Data, Kits and Protocols Maxigas, Hacklabs and Hackerspaces - Tracing Two Genealogies Sara Tocchetti, DIYbiologists as ‘Makers’ of Personal Biologies: How MAKE Magazine and Maker Faires Contribute in Constituting Biology as a Personal Technology Paolo Magaudda, How to make a “Hackintosh”. A Journey into the “Consumerization” of Hacking Practices and Culture Morgan Meyer, Build Your Own Lab: Do-it-yourself Biology and the Rise of Citizen Biotech-Economies Mitch Altman, Hacking at the Crossroad - US Military Funding of Hackerspaces Feel free to tweet, blog, share, comment the content of this special issue. We hope it will be a good starting point for further studies of the spreading of hacking practices outside the software field. Finally, we take advantage of this email to invite you to attend the panel we will chair, together with Eric Deibel, at the 4S/EASST Conference in Copenhagen in October. It is titled “Hacking STS - bio-hacking, open hardware development, and hackerspaces”, and will be another space to discuss the topics of this special issue. Sincerely, Alessandro and Johan
