CFP: Value and Currency in Peer Production
by Mathieu ONeil 06 Dec '12

06 Dec '12

The Journal of Peer Production CFP: Value and Currency in Peer Production Edited by: Nathaniel Tkacz, Nicolás Mendoza and Francesca Musiani. The marriage of cryptography and the dynamics of open-source have now produced a working distributed currency system. Bitcoin, as the most notable example, can be understood as a new technics of exchange inspired by the animal spirits of crypto-libertarianism. Whether or not there is a place for currency -- and therefore exchange and (economic) value -- in the utopian visions of commons-oriented thought is contested. Meanwhile, hybrid forms like Bitcoin are developing unhindered by their constitutional paradoxes. Capitalism, after all, equally thrives atop what David Graeber has called a 'baseline' or 'everyday' communism. Current developments of digital currencies are pervaded by a number of issues: Who or what issues the money? What is the source of the collective agreement to concede value? What forms of control are coded into currency systems and who is guiding processes of (re)design? Who plays the role of guarantor when a currency is decentralized? And what role does trust play in all these issues? Has crypto-mathematics transformed trust into a technical quality of a system? The flipside of this issue is value: The intensification and extension of computational procedures, which is manifested most clearly in the rise of big data, has lead to a proliferation of bottom-up procedures to formalise 'values', rendering them easily calculable and lending order to the decentralised world of peers. Wikipedia contributors, for example, have long awarded each other 'barnstars' for valued service in a range of areas, and the site has long explored ways of rating article quality. In place of managerial commands and bureaucratic hierarchies we have Karma points, ranking systems, reputation metrics and the long-tail logic of networks. Order in this sense is iterative, recursive and topological. This issue of The Journal of Peer Production invites contributions on the themes of value and currency as they relate to peer production. Topics might include but are not limited to: - Decentralised and crypto-currencies; - Non-coercive taxation systems and/or experiments/experiences; - Analog/pre-digital (or historical) networks for distributed value exchange; - Currency and design; - Currencies and the commons; - Life after fiat (the becoming-uncertain of taxes); - What does/should peer production value?; - Re-thinking the constitution of value; - Theories of non-monetary value and worth; - The relationship between valuing practices and project hierarchies; - Forms of belief in peer production; - Automated systems of ranking and distributing value; - Theories of exchange, gift and voluntarism; - Trust and anonymity in the building of value; - Intermediation and 'guarantees' in P2P exchanges. Submission proposals of under 500 words due by January 28, 2013. Full submission details and extended CFP available at http://peerproduction.net/value-and-currency-in-peer-production/(http://pee…

Future plans
by Mathieu ONeil 15 Nov '12

Hi all It has been a while since we discussed future issues and content. To sum up where we are: FLOSS (F/OSS?) special issue Maurizio and Vincenzo are on schedule Release date: June 2013/July 2013 Debate: yes, they have some people lined up though not sure how advanced this is @Maurizio and Vincenzo: any updates most welcome Interviews: looking for suggestions. @Maurizio and Vincenzo: I have an idea. I attended an "open source" conference a while ago and there was a lawyer for the FSF there who does copyleft enforcement - if copyleft is threatened he sues or threatens to sue. I see this as a good example of someone concretely extending the (digital) commons. If you think this is a good idea we could organise an email interview. Value/Currency special issue Francesca recently joined Nate and Nicolás Mendoza to coordinate. They are aiming to release a CFP before the end of the year, which they will circulate on this list for comments. Release date: December 2013/January 2014 Comments/debate:? Interviews:? Other Special issues: Johan has been in touch with some Swedish people who are interested in doing a special issue on piracy Possible release date: June 2014/July 2014? Comments/debate:? Interview:? Organisation special issue, coordinated by Dariusz, Mayo, and Mathieu No progress on CFP - I guess I'm happy that others are leading the way Possible release date: December 2014/January 2015? Comments/debate:? Interview:? Other special issues:? If anyone has any ideas for debates and interviews (not necessarily related to content of special issue) please let it be known. It really is quite open... There is still the surveys.peerproduction site to link to and interview. Could fit into the FLOSS issue maybe? Re.the hackerspace documentation subproject, no-one on this list has expressed interest so far and since I can't take the lead for the moment it appears to be on hold. @Clément: it will happen eventually, not right now I guess. That's all I can think of, cheers Mathieu -- ****

HI Christian, all I went with option one and created a "mission statement" subpage, then starting putting links on the about page. However I ran into the WordPress Wall Of Inscrutability and Frustration and despite my best efforts the "mission statement" subpage won't appear in the menu. @Franco: could you please have a look and help with this? many thanks. cheers Mathieu On 10/31/12, Christian Siefkes <christian(a)siefkes.net> wrote: > Hi Mathieu and all, > > On 10/28/2012 09:21 AM, Mathieu ONeil wrote: > > Yes, good point. New member of JoPP board: Francesca Musiani
by Mathieu ONeil 01 Nov '12

01 Nov '12

Hi all I am pleased to sponsor a new member for the JoPP editorial board, Francesca Musiani. I saw Francesca in Paris recently and she told me she would be interested in working on the P2P currency/value issue that Nate has been working on. After some back-and-forth between Nate, Francesca and I it is all OK and going forward. In the course of the conversation Francesca presented some of her research interests and suggested that I forward this to the list, so I'm posting an abridged version below. If after a week no-one opposes then the nomination will be effective. cheers Mathieu -------- Original Message -------- (snip) Something more about me and my interest in JoPP/this issue project more specifically. I am having somewhat of a nomadic academic year between Washington, DC (where I have my "primary affiliation" as this year's Yahoo! Fellow-in-Residence at Georgetown U), Cambridge, MA (where I'm affiliated with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society) and Paris, France (where I defended my PhD a couple of weeks ago and where I have an ongoing research project at Ecole des Mines - and other stuff). The common basis of all this is an interest in alternative, decentralized architectures/infrastructures for Internet services and platforms. My website is painfully in need of an update, but a more recent profile of me is here: http://isd.georgetown.edu/233483.html. This project of a journal issue on distributed currency (or, as both Nate and Mathieu suggest, on P2P and "valuation" of exchange, more generally, of which distributed currency platforms would be an important strand) is very interesting for me as I believe that very recently, it is perhaps the area in which decentralized/P2P systems (where decentralization is also in the technical infrastructure) has shown the most interesting developments. Within the frame of my French research project, ADAM (adam.hypotheses.org) we have done some preliminary "mapping" work on distributed currency platforms and we plan to make Bitcoin one of our three case studies for the work package that is centered on users. A lot of my PhD work has been on the "new intermediations" in alternative P2P services, so this is yet another declination of the "P2P valuation" that we might consider when drafting the call for this issue. A suivre, as we adopted-Parisians would say... :) kind regards Francesca PS: Mathieu - I realize that I basically just wrote what I would have written on the mailing list after your introduction - feel free to forward it right away if you see it fit :)

Hi Christian, all Yes, good point. However if we remove the mission statement from the submission subpage there is always the chance that someone will go straight to the sub page through the top menu and miss the mission statement - so maybe it should be on both? cheers Mathieu On 10/26/12, Christian Siefkes <christian(a)siefkes.net> wrote: > Hi all, > > I friend notes that the journal's "About" is empty. Empty "About" page
by Christian Siefkes 26 Oct '12

Hi all, I friend notes that the journal's "About" is empty. There are various subpages visible in the menu on top, but the page itself has no content. The first subpage is entitled "Submissions" but has the link <http://peerproduction.net/about/mission-statement/>. It contains both, the mission statement and info on "How to submit to the Journal". One way of fixing the empty About page would be to move the mission statement there and limit the Submissions page to submission info only. New project (was: JoPP at Open Bidouille Camp)

Hi all OK, well Clément from Electrolab (cc-ed to this message) is interested in working with us on the hacker / peer production spaces documentation project. I will subscribe him to this list if we proceed (see below). Clément pointed me to hackerspaces.org which lists hacklabs globally. In the first instance our own project would be a resource documenting best practice, experiences, problems that can be avoided, tips etc by people involved in hacklabs and other peer production spaces. We would need to define a questionnaire and then contact people. If someone has a better idea about how to do this please go ahead, it is still very open at this stage. >From this emerge a number of questions: @Franco: can we set up a new subdomain like surveys.peerproduction.net? @all (1): we need to define a title. I suggest spaces.peerproduction.net - less restrictive than "hackerspaces" IMO. @all (2): we need (a) contact person(s) to drive this forward. I am happy to help but would prefer it if the responsibility was shared... so, who would like to get involved? cheers Mathieu Le 09/27/12, Mathieu ONeil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> a écrit : > Hi George > > Well sure but we have to like it too ;-) > > I just wrote to him to let him know that we are OK with this idea and to ask him to confirm whether he wants to go ahead - if he says yes we can subscribe him. > > cheers > > Mathieu > > On 09/27/12, george dafermos <georgedafermos(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > my own preference is for hacklabs.peerproduction.net but i think this > > decision ultimately lies with the person who'll be responsible for > > that project.
