[implementations-list] buggy behaviour with Transient Mark Mode disabled
by Štěpán Němec 14 Apr '10

14 Apr '10

Hello Vegard, OK, I see you fix bugs sooner than I decide whether I should whine about it or look in the source... :-P (speaking about gu/gU moving to bol unconditionally). Not this one though: Vimpulse exhibits strange behaviour with Transient Mark Mode disabled, and I seem to recall that wasn't the case before that last update (to rev 199, but I don't really remember from which revision) of mine. One typical manifestation, even without involving selection at all: With TMM off, first `dd' in a buffer deletes the whole portion of the buffer up to that line. After this failure, it works correctly again ...until you set the mark, obviously. In short, the command seems to act upon the region instead of line when TMM is disabled. Similarly with `yy'. Best regards, Štěpán P.S.: Is there any chance of convincing you to just use one big file? I'd really appreciate that, especially after switching to a usable VCS. Last time I proposed that you said multiple files were advantageous for debugging -- what did you mean? I can't think of any such advantage myself. Heck, you made it to 6k, but there's still allout.el with 7151! ;-)

[implementations-list] h/j/k/l keys in Info mode (was: How important is a Vimpulse user manual? ...)

I see, looking at the changeset[*], that this doesn't yet affect Info mode unless you uncomment the several lines of commented-out code starting with eval-after-load 'info in vimpulse-misc-keybindings.el. If you uncomment those lines, then in Info mode, what can you press to go back to the last Info node you read before? Surely "l", the "Last node" key, won't work. Cheers, -Jason ^ [*]. http://my-trac.assembla.com/vimpulse/changeset/58

[implementations-list] A bug in text object?
by INA Lintaro 01 Apr '10

01 Apr '10

Hello, I found a bug in text object. Using '* i w' at the beginning of a word preceded by a non-whitespace character does not work correctly. For example, 'd i w' at the position of 'b' in the text "foo (bar)" deletes '(', where I think it should delete 'bar'. -- Lintaro INA

[implementations-list] vimpulse interaction with cua increasing number feature
by Fabian Braennstroem 31 Mar '10

31 Mar '10

Hello, I am using vimpulse for quite a while now ... and I like it a lot :-) For a while now, I am having difficulties with the interaction of vimpulse and cua. Basically, I am just using cua's feature to insert and increase numbers for the selected rectangle. [M-n] fills each line of the rectangle with increasing numbers using a supplied format string (prompt) Does anyone have a hint, how I could get this cua-feature to work with the new vimpulse? Maybe, there is already a vimpulse function, which can do the same!? Thanks in advance! Fabian

[implementations-list] style; VCS
by Štěpán Němec 21 Mar '10

21 Mar '10

Hello Vegard, some oh-so-helpful remarks from me again! 1. (defvar vimpulse-state-vars-alist '((vi-state . ((id . viper-vi-state-id) (basic-mode . viper-vi-basic-minor-mode) (basic-map . viper-vi-basic-map) [...] In lisp, '(<object> . <list>) is the same as '(<object> <list>) (with an exception of <list> being `nil' of course, if you want to be really anal), so you don't need some of those dots in there. 2. ;; Viper's definition lacks an indentation specification (defmacro viper-deflocalvar (var default-value &optional documentation) "Define VAR as a buffer-local variable. DEFAULT-VALUE is the default value and DOCUMENTATION is the docstring. The variable becomes buffer-local whenever set." (declare (indent defun)) `(progn (defvar ,var ,default-value ,(format "%s\n\(buffer local\)" documentation)) (make-variable-buffer-local ',var))) You don't need to redefine the whole function/macro only to add a docstring or indent spec. You can use the `function-documentation' and `lisp-indent-function' symbol properties for that, i.e. (put 'viper-deflocalvar 'function-documentation "Define VAR as a buffer-local variable. DEFAULT-VALUE is the default value and DOCUMENTATION is the docstring. The variable becomes buffer-local whenever set.") (put 'viper-deflocalvar 'lisp-indent-function 'defun) But actually, wouldn't it make more sense to send a patch for inclusion in Emacs core? Viper could definitely use some affection (btw you didn't reply to my related question in the last mail). Also, have you thought about moving Vimpulse to some usable VCS like Git? It would be soooo much more convenient to even just track the development, not mentioning possible contributions from others. Best wishes, Štěpán

[implementations-list] [VImpulse] visual selection change command bug
by Alessandro Piras 12 Mar '10

12 Mar '10

visual selecting the last lines in a file and changing them is broken. The cursor is moved 1 line above the correct position and a new line is opened. example: insert this text : asdf1 asdf2 asdf3 asdf4 asdf5 ~ visual select from the last line to asdf3 hit c Alessandro Piras

[implementations-list] About the paren matching
by Alessandro Piras 20 Feb '10

20 Feb '10

I installed emacs again today, and downloaded the new vimpulse. This is actually an old problem that i never addressed, and that's still present. Paren matching should revert to normal emacs behavior when editing a buffer that's not using viper nor vimpulse. For example when using slime's repl.

[implementations-list] [ANN] vim-mode 0.3
by Frank Fischer 19 Feb '10

19 Feb '10

This is an announcement of vim-mode 0.3. vim-mode is another implementation of vi/vim-like key-bindings for Emacs. The mercurial-repository is available at http://bitbucket.org/lyro/vim-mode Version 0.3 includes the following improvements: - XEmacs support - marks - registers for macro-recording and yank/paste - ex-mode - buffer-local key-bindings for all modes via `vim:local-nmap', `vim:local-omap', ... - mouse-selection now enables visual-mode * single-click -> character visual-mode * double-click -> word selection visual-mode * triple-click -> linewise visual-mode * quadruple-click -> block visual-mode - visual-mode selection is passed to Emacs-commands which take a region-argument Since most required features are now present, the plans for the next versions include mainly: - bug-fixes - implementation of missing commands/motion (text-objects) - improved documentation - more interactive search/substitude Feel free to sent any comments, ideas, bug-reports... Greetings, Frank Fischer

[implementations-list] Ease of use of Emacs and Vimpulse (was: What should the Vimpulse quick-start guide talk about?)
by Jason Spiro 17 Feb '10

17 Feb '10

Vegard wrote, and Jason quoted: > [...] ideally, I'd > like Vimpulse to be useable without too much Emacs knowledge. This is a good ideal. Would anyone here volunteer to do some informal usability testing? Anyone can do it. And it would help us achieve the ideal that Vegard mentioned above. == Usability testing idea == * Find some Vim users at your local workplace, school, hacklab, or LUG, or other place. * Tell them about Emacs, Vimpulse, and why they might like them. * Point them to the Emacs and Vimpulse homepages. * Tell them you'd like them to install and get started with Emacs and Vimpulse with no help from you, so that you can watch and see what we can do to make Vimpulse easier to install and get started with. * Sit back and *not talk at all* while they figure out Emacs and Vimpulse. But it seems to me that the Emacs learning curve is very steep, so it would take a lot of time for Emacs newbies to succeed even in just installing Vimpulse into their Emacs add-ons directory. Correct? == More questions which are not strictly related to usability testing == How was your experience of learning Emacs? How hard was it for you? What helped? People? Certain books? Certain videos? Certain websites? Also, please tell us on behalf of the other people you know who've used Emacs: How was their experience of learning Emacs?
