Preliminary Report - Southeast Asian Grassroots Response to COVID-19
by Honey Tabiola 19 Jun '20

19 Jun '20

Dear partners, colleagues, friends, We respectfully share with you our preliminary report on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic to grassroots and marginalized communities across the Southeast Asian region and their valuable responses and initiatives. Attached is the file but you can also download the report for free through this link: https://cids.up.edu.ph/covid19portal/altdev-sea-grassroots-covid19-response… *A Preliminary Report on Southeast Asian Community and Grassroots Responses in COVID-19 Times (29 May 2020)* Eduardo C. Tadem, Ananeza P. Aban, Karl Arvin F. Hapal, Venarica B. Papa, Nathaniel P. Candelaria, Honey B. Tabiola, and Jose Monfred C. Sy ABSTRACT: As the whole world reels under the impact of the unprecedented health crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been little attention on its effect on grassroots communities and marginalized sectors. This is particularly important given the haphazard and erratic manner of official measures to contain the contagion which are being implemented in a situation where health systems face serious challenges in terms of readiness to confront a crisis of this proportions. While national reports are extensively documented and macro numbers are often reported, there is a need to look more closely at underprivileged sectors and communities. This preliminary report documents what marginalized communities in Southeast Asia are engaging in and how they respond to the pandemic. Results are varied, conditioned on the location, existence of community and sectoral organizations, and levels of social solidarity and collective consciousness. Thank you so much. On behalf of UP CIDS AltDev, Hans Tabiola Junior Research Analyst

Dear friends and colleagues, Greetings from the Philippines! We hope that you remain safe in these uncertain times. I am Nathaniel Candelaria, one of the program staff of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies Program on Alternative Development (AltDev Program). The AltDev program was introduced earlier to the loop by one of my colleagues. On behalf of the AltDev Program, I would like to share with everyone our newest publication: UP CIDS Public Policy Monograph The Game of the Great Powers: Rizal on Imperialism<https://drive.google.com/file/d/16NH1WvzLXqvX5V5JPqgzg8ldQSC09F2z/view> George Aseniero Program on Alternative Development Short link: bit.ly/rizalonimperialism<http://bit.ly/rizalonimperialism> Download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16NH1WvzLXqvX5V5JPqgzg8ldQSC09F2z/view UP CIDS Public Policy Monograph The Future Has an Ancient Heart: In Search of Our Antiguas Buenas Calidades<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AOtj97-2CoEIFFTWS587e1DESd57UkQf/view> Floro C. Rizal. Dr. Rizal was one of the heroes who fought for our country's freedom against the Spanish colonization through his critical essays and publications against the abuses of the colonizers against Filipinos during the 19th century. Aside from his critical essays against Spain, Dr. Rizal was also known for his keen analysis of geopolitical events during the 19th Century. These publications further explore the thought of one of our heroes. Thank you very much and stay safe. Regards, Nathaniel

The webinar takes place on 16 June which is a symbolic day in anti-racist struggles, commemorating the start of the Soweto uprising in South Africa in 1976.
