Urgent Help for El Cambalache / Ayuda Urgente Para El Cambalache
by Erin Araujo 23 May '22

23 May '22

***ESPAÑOL ABAJO*** ***PORTUGUÊS ABAIXO*** ***FRACAIS EN BAS*** Dear Colleagues, I am writing to share some challenging news. My name is Erin Araujo, from the Department of Decolonial Economics at El Cambalache, located in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. This is a call for your help and support. In early April the project was notified that WE WILL BE EVICTED from our home, the heart of our community in the next 3-9 months. As a collective we have a local project that is a space for de- and anti-colonial economic practice, theorization and international education. As a space of de- and anti-colonial struggle we practice knowledge creation and shifting our subjectivities through exchanges of knowledge, things, abilities and mutual aid. We are a small collective of seven women from the Americas. We are facing a crisis. Since 2019, the El Cambalache Collective has provided online and in person workshops to support learning about the wide range of de- and anti-colonial economic practices throughout the Americas that have been (and continue to be) part of many indigenous and rural communities’ resistance to the imposition of capitalism, coloniality and modernity. We share practices about how to create and support decolonial economic projects with students, professional academics and activists around the world. Our space is one of the few that anti-colonial in form and function. It has not been easy to start a space that realizes non-oppressive forms of research methodology and knowledge creation. To see our video about the situation: https://youtu.be/k2R_XAtuW6o <https://youtu.be/k2R_XAtuW6o> We live in a state that is imbued with constant violence in myriad forms. In reality, we have a right to this space because through the Mexican legal system we have lived in and worked in our home for enough years that it should already be ours. However, we fear that if we were to pursue a legal avenue we would be killed. So, our option at the moment is to try to fundraise enough money to purchase the house. Normally we fund our project through these workshops but our yearly budget is around $20,000 USD a year. We also have a small store that sells solidarity products produced by collectives and local communities in resistance. Our income is normally enough to provide small stipends to each of the members of the collective, pay rent and utilities. However, it is not enough to buy a permanent home for our project. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Could you support us with a donation LINK and sharing this letter with your colleagues, students and friends to help El Cambalache keep our home and continue sharing, learning and acting through decolonial practice? Any size donation is a huge help. If you would be interested in collaborating with us to strengthen our networks and build this movement please get in touch. If you would be interested in joining our community, we have set up a Patreon site LINK where we will run monthly conversations around decolonial practice. Please help us support this movement towards decolonization so that we, as a community, can continue creating and supporting knowledge and practices around all of the beauty and complexity that is most of the world. We thank you from the heart of El Cambalache for all of your support. El Cambalache, the Swap in English, is a space for moneyless exchanges of all different kinds. We believe that each person has a great deal to exchange, teach and share. In Chiapas most women have very low access to money but our riches lie within our hearts and minds. The project provides a space where people exchange all different kinds of things- clothing, shoes, cell phones, computers, tools, construction materials, movies, cooking appliances, jewelry, self care items, and much, much more. People also exchange knowledge through workshops on- embroidery, electrical repair, permaculture, cooking, yoga and exercise, computer repair, clothing repair, gynecology and lactation, herbal medicine, fermenting, design, chess classes, language classes, and so much more. One year ago we began a library and we have been collecting books for our community. Our project also regularly supports individuals and communities in crises such as forced displacement, natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, fires), domestic violence and pandemic relief through donations of food, clothing, mattress, medicines and we maintain a place to stay for people in need. Our work is local. Women are mostly responsible for clothing, feeding, caring for and ensuring the education of our families. However, with low access to money, racism, and oppression many women find themselves in desperate situations on a day to day basis. By creating a space for moneyless exchanges and decreasing people’s dependance on money people raise their quality of life from the first day that they participate in El Cambalache. We have spent the last seven years building community connections, supporting each other, and strengthening networks across our city and region. People all over the city of San Cristobal de las Casas visit our project and the beautiful space where we do our work. Our project is international. Through the Department of Decolonial Economics we have shared practices and ideas about how to start similar projects with people from every continent except Antartica. All donations will go to purchasing our home and the urgently needed renovations that the current owners have negated to do. If we are able to raise $500,000 we will also begin the purchase and construction of our dream center for exchanging knowledge and practices so that we can host people from around the world to learn about how to create their own decolonial economies. Knowledge Commoning
by Israr Qureshi 13 May '22

13 May '22

Some members of this list may find our recently published paper useful. Knowledge Commoning: Scaffolding and Technoficing to Overcome Challenges of Knowledge Curation How indigenous and local knowledge can be curated to enhance income generation opportunities of the marginalized communities. https://lnkd.in/gfHUFsMP (free download of the paper is available until July 1, 2022, here: https://lnkd.in/gq9dRChG) Abstract Extant approaches to information provisioning to farmers to improve agricultural productivity, and thereby alleviate poverty have relied on top-down external expert-driven knowledge. Such external knowledge involves decontextualised content and the use of technical language, and is resource-intensive. An alternative view emphasises the need to explore indigenous knowledge exists in rural communities, which, in contrast, requires the use of local resources, is easily understandable, and has greater potential for adoption. This paper explores how information and communication technologies, specifically videos, can be leveraged to curate such indigenous knowledge and convert it to knowledge commons. Adopting a case study approach that involved multiple sources of data collection over a nine-year period, we unearthed a dynamic process model that we labelled as knowledge commoning. It is a process through which latent-action-oriented knowledge from high-yield farmers embedded within its social context is made available as commons. The creation of knowledge commons is an iterative process between knowledge curation and knowledge dissemination, and is guided by the demand and uptake potential within local farming communities. Further, we describe how socio-cultural barriers in knowledge commoning can be overcome through scaffolding, involving the concealment of social transformation objectives within another goal desired by the community. What’s up with AgroecologyNow!? May 2022 Update

What’s up with AgroecologyNow!? May 2022 Update AgroecologyNow! works with partners in social movements, civil society, governments and research institutions to promote a transformative agroecology for food sovereignty and social justice: www.agroecologynow.com<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroec…> See below for some highlights of our latest work and highlights from our networks, including free-to-download articles, videos and other resources. Please feel free to copy/adapt parts for use in newsletters, etc. or share the entire update via this link: https://wp.me/P67WNH-ZQ<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2FP…> AgroecologyNow! Features New animation: For feminist agroecologies (EN, ES, FR, PT, NL) What is the story behind the food you eat? What if people really valued all the underpaid and unpaid work behind every meal? What if women didn't have to do most of the work? What if it wasn't Black, Indigenous, and people of color who bore most of the burden? These are some of the questions raised in the short animation ‘For feminist agroecologies’ (2’19’’) by the AgroecologyNow collective. The film delves into the inequalities the food system is built on, and calls for agroecologies that fight racism, sexism and all forms of oppression. The video is available with English<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com…>, French<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com…> and Spanish<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com…> narration and with Dutch and Portuguese subtitles. Drawing on the experience of feminist food activits from Mexico and Spain, the first episode ‘What does feminism have to do with the food you eat?’ (31 min) unpacks the ways in which it is necessary to go beyond gender for food system transformation and how it can be done in practice. Drawing on the spiritual practice of mistica that forms a regular part of La Via Campesina gatherings, she highlights the importance of artistic forms of expression such as rhythm, dance, drama and symbolism in creating a sense of unity and solidarity among activists of different cultural backgrounds, while also deepening their connection to the natural world. The chinampas were floating beds made like a basket of reeds in which organic material was collected to generate soil and produce food in the middle of a lake. The ingenious pre-hispanic cropping system of the Chinampas in Xochimilco, south of Mexico City is under threat today. Now the beds no longer float, but are plots of land separated by canals. The water is contaminated and the chinampas are used for weekend parties and industrial flower production. Mexico City is long overdue for agroecological policies that protect its agro-gems. What is a weed? We generally think of it as a ‘plant in the wrong place’. But what if we viewed these plants as signs of the ecology in which they are embedded? In this blog, Chris Maughan discusses a recent participatory study exploring the use of 'plant bioindicators' by UK farmers, and the publication of a new <https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agroe…> Bioindicator Field Guide. Underlying this are questions of how compatible are plant bioindicators as part of a farmer-centred, agroecological approach to soil management? And how likely are farmers to start using them as a way to engage more deeply with land they steward? In particular, he describes the network’s current experiments on selecting wheat varieties for cultivation by simultaneously taking into consideration agronomic, milling and baking criteria. Relatedly, he also makes the case for the need to develop new methods for assessing wheat and flour that are compatible with agroecological grain production and artisanal baking. https://wp.me/p67WNH-Yz<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2Fp…> Embracing Critical Friendship for Agroecology Transitions (EN, ES, FR) In this article Colin Anderson, Chris Maughan and Sydney Blume explain the notion of ‘the critical friend’.
