STOP DESIGN THINKING - Save yourselves from design thinkers
by Jinan K B 23 Jun '23

23 Jun '23

STOP DESIGN THINKING I have uploaded a paper at Academia and medium about how to understand the modern mindset by examining the term design thinking. Join me to discuss this https://www.academia.edu/s/b416e3384b or you can read about the same at https://jinankb.medium.com/stop-design-thinking-c6ffc24148d1 One doesn’t require an anthropologist, sociologist, psychologist, and least of all a cognitive scientist to understand the modern mindset. Just a bit of common sense (the most uncommon in modernity which is what schooling takes away) will do. A proper examination of the term ‘design thinking’ will do. How they bring in two totally diverse phenomena together in words and pretend the job is done. This is the same drama with first fragmenting knowledge into various subjects and making the pretense of integrating all by just creating a few terms- multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, etc… It is interesting another nature of the modern mindset which can be called an ‘afterthought’. This means first destroy, make this as default and then pretend for the first time a solution is provided. Take the usage ‘out of the box thinking. A much-celebrated usage…. The stupidity of the modern mindset is that they are not asking why are you in the box in the first place. Who put us in? So, our default setting is in the box, fragmented……. And instead of trying to find the root cause, a temporary solution is offered. Also thanks to Lina, Ashish and others for building on previous threads so we don't lose out on past ideas and conversations. Apologies for the long email, I'm trying to clarify what I understood from our meeting and hopefully provide a suggestion forward. *As agreed, I am scheduling a meeting for us to reconvene on Thursday March 31 at 11:30am in New York (EDT or UTC-4)*. Here is the zoom link: https://nyu.zoom.us/j/8645835567 <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnyu.zoom.…> The purpose of that meeting (as I understand it) is for members of this group to gather again to deepen our own understanding about each other's work, ideas and possible collaborations. The idea is to create a reflective space for us to share work that is already underway, make connections where possible, and brainstorm new ideas together. Some of the ideas we discussed were to collaborate on future webinars and consider joint initiatives like contributing materials or writing to publications or newsletters. In addition to increasing how we share our work and who participates, the other issue raised was how to go beyond offering 1-off webinars that often remain at an informational level, and try different formats (some new structures were briefly shared), as well as, consider creating workshop formats where participants would attend a series of sessions with guided questions and activities to take back to their organizations and work on in-between sessions. In this vein, maybe it makes sense for the next meeting to focus on: (1) 1-2 critical ideas/concrete examples of the kinds initiatives each of us are focusing on that we want to highlight/share (2) examples of successful ways of convening and bringing together different/diverse communities that we span, and (3) challenges and questions about extending/expanding or deepening this work beyond introductions and "show and tell" to something transformative. *I also understood that a second meeting will be held soon that will be focused on planning an initial joint webinar (or first in a series of webinars/workshops) with PeDAGoG, Educere, Ecoversities Alliance, TAP, and GTA on alternative learning/education* (possibly in late April)... (based on a concept note from conversations that were started between these organizations that was created and shared by Lina). This could become a series of webinars joining the one being planned by Pallavi etc on their course called Living Utopias. Maybe a sub-group for planning should meet and design this initial session, possibly building from Lina's concept note (This earlier group was comprised of Lina, Vashna, Steve, Carol Anne, Franco, Pallav Shrishtee, Ashish) and will be combined with Pallavi and Sujit's initial planning. Can either Lina or Pallavi schedule this group in the coming weeks? We can share an update at our March 31 meeting. *A third webinar on higher education transformation (through this group) and a fourth on* community resilience in times of crises and radical alternatives (GTA, TAP, WeALL)* will (hopefully) follow. We can discuss and plan for those at the March 31 meeting.* *Hope that makes sense and captures what we discussed. I'll also send a zoom link with the calendar invite soon.* *thanks, Carol Anne* On Fri, Mar 4, 2022 at 8:13 AM Pallavi Varma Patil <pallavi.vp(a)apu.edu.in> wrote: Such a lovely note, Lina! There is only one point that is confusing (for me, at least): I am not sure if Pallavi will take as a backdrop the note I sent you, or if Pallavi was proposing something different. In any case, I am sending you the link to the googledocs where you can find the concept note (you’ll also find it in an attached document). Pallavi, if you think the note fits the aims of the webinar, please feel free to use it and modify it. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_9g7NNYfQSe5XAs-ZtBusxlO8d1ZEpcuTmVLbLE… <https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefens…> The note is composed of three parts: 1. the problematic: why does education matter? (its ontological, anthropological and political basis and effects); 2. the principles and effects of modern and hegemonic education; 3. the existence of other ways of understanding and practicing education, as well as some of the general characteristics of these alternative conceptions. In a previous meeting Vasna (from the GTA) proposed to invite Alessandra Pomarico from Ecoversities Alliance, and I suggested to invite James Montano, a professor from the Misak University (an indigenous university based in the south of Colombia). Franco (from REEVO and GTA) proposed to draw on the dialogue that was started by a webinar recently held by TAP (so as not to start from scratch). At the end of the googledocs you’ll find the points that were discussed in that webinar. I am not sure if this information is useful, but I am sending it to you, so we don’t lose the memory and the work of past meetings. Sending you aloha from Hawai'i. I've been hoping to connect more with you for a while and see more about potential collaborations, including through our respective collectives. Since Gustavo's passing I also wanted to reach out. I read your moving piece "Hola Gustavo" and in the spirit of celebrating his life I was wondering if people would be interested in looking at the film we made with him 'Re-learning Hope. A Story of Unitierra'. I am not sure you have seen this, or whether Gustavo mentioned this to you, but when we made it and released it in 2016 he was very excited and supportive of it. Since then the film has been watched several thousand times and received good feedback. Anyway I send you the link to this here should you wish to share this or take it any further: https://vimeo.com/172681670 Hope our paths can cross again sometime soon. With warm wishes and abrazos Udi

Edible Extinction: Why We Need to Revive Global Food Diversity

Edible Extinction: Why We Need to Revive Global Food Diversity The Green Revolution helped feed a surging global population, but at the cost of impoverishing crop diversity. Now, with climate change increasingly threatening food supplies, the need for greater agricultural resilience means restoring endangered crop and food varieties. https://e360.yale.edu/features/a-look-inside-the-global-movement-to-revive-… __ Christian Stalberg Doctoral Student Anthropology & Social Change CIIS, San Francisco, CA "I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. Fwd: DSA IC: Launch of Global Economics 101 April 17th

This may be of interest. Steve ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: NPEC via ActionNetwork.org <politicaleducation(a)dsacommittees.org> Date: Sun, Apr 10, 2022 at 8:30 PM Subject: DSA IC: Launch of Global Economics 101 April 17th To: <sklees(a)umd.edu> *DSA International Committee Launch of Global Economics 101, April 17, 2022* *Join us for the inaugural session in this series “The World We Have: An Introduction to Global Economics and Trade” featuring Adom Getachew, Jason Hickel, and David Kotz (bios below) on Sunday April 17 at 11am ET.* *REGISTER HERE: **dsaic.org/GlobalEcon101 <http://dsaic.org/GlobalEcon101?link_id=0&can_id=9d8e3f83496863420b93516dbe3…>* [image: event title and subtile with pictures of the three panelist on a red background] How does the global economic system work? How do the rules of the capitalist, imperialist system work to benefit the few at the expense of the many? And how do we transform this world for the protection of the planet and the liberation of workers in the Global South and North alike? Over the coming months, the Climate and Economics Subcommittee of the DSA International Committee will present a new political education series — an Introduction to Global Economics — to answer these questions and more, exploring the key dynamics of, and actors in, the contemporary global economic system. Though much attention is paid (and rightfully so!) to the more overt, attention-grabbing manifestations of imperialism, such as wars and coups, this series seeks to introduce US socialists to the subtler, but no less insidious, systemic functioning of global capitalism, touching on issues of global debt, the IMF, the rules of trade, dollar hegemony. We reject the idea that these economic subjects are only for the “experts” — whether the IMF’s stranglehold on African economic independence, the shackles of debt that weigh down Latin America, or the WTO’s war on workers from the US to the Philippines, these are issues that affect the people and are of critical importance to socialists of all stripes and interests. This series aims to equip our movement with the foundational knowledge needed to confront them. *Join us!* In solidarity, Michael Galant Co-Chair of the DSA IC Climate and Economics Subcommittee *Session 1 Panelist Bios:* - *Jason Hickel *— Dr. Jason Hickel is an economic anthropologist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and the author of, among other things, The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions. - *Adom Getachew* — Dr. Adom Getachew is Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Political Science and the College at the University of Chicago, and the author of Worldmaking After Empire: The Rise and Fall of Self-Determination. - *David Kotz* — Dr. David Kotz is a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the author of The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Capitalism, and a member of the DSA IC’s Climate and Economics subcommittee. *REGISTER HERE: **dsaic.org/GlobalEcon101 <https://u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net/ss/c/P8Elou2Rvc0qoMPEUZrMXcOpy_XqN4R2ZGjoK…>* [image: Action Network] <https://u1584542.ct.sendgrid.net/ss/c/P8Elou2Rvc0qoMPEUZrMXcOpy_XqN4R2ZGjoK…> Sent via Action Network, a free online toolset anyone can use to organize. Friends, A new article, "Gustavo Esteva had a vision" by David Barkin has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website: https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/gustavo-esteva-had-a-vision%ef%bf%bc/ All through his uniquely inventive life, Gustavo Esteva conceived and established trailblazing initiatives, opening up fresh possibilities to fashion new worlds, and he did so with an ever-expanding group of spirited and thoughtful collaborators, particularly in his native Mexico. In this tribute, David Barkin, one of Esteva’s long-time comrades, recounts the enormous impact his ideas and initiatives had on the quest for societal transformation. A Proposal (Generating a reading list collaboratively on 'Alternative Pedagogies')
by Pallavi Varma Patil 07 Apr '22

07 Apr '22

Dear lovely people of PeDAGoG, EDUCERE, GTA, Eco-varsities and more! (If I miss any network or name - I request Urvi- the new coordinator of PeDAGoG) to add and forward...) Kindly see the email below. Christine Dann reached out to us after the 1st webinar and suggested an interesting idea : Generating a resource list on 'alternative pedagogies' .together. If any one here is interested to contribute to this idea, please get in touch with Christine Dann directly (email below). Best, Pallavi ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Christine Dann <christine(a)horomaka.org> Date: Wed, Apr 6, 2022 at 2:19 PM Subject: Re: [PeDAGoG] Webinar recording of LIving Utopias webinar To: Pallavi Varma Patil <pallavi.vp(a)apu.edu.in> Kia ora Pallavi, I watched/listened to the webinar last night and went to bed thinking about it. When I woke up the words "It is about autonomous learning for autonomous living" were in my head. (Whereas the standard 'education' system is about Other-directed learning for Other-directed purposes - like a bullshit job, or being a good consumer, etc.) A lot of the discussion in the webinar was around this issue of autonomy, as in "how autonomous (free, innovative) can teachers employed by academic institutions be?" and "how autonomous are the students when it comes to living what they have learned - putting ideas into activist practice?" Most of my 50 year 'career' to date has been as a researcher, writer and political organiser, but I have also taught at secondary, tertiary and adult eduction levels, including subjects and courses as varied as an Honours class in Feminist Issues in Education, a night class in cottage gardening, a second year university level course on wellbeing, and a third year course on environmental policy. I also studied education to level 3 at university (1971-73) and did two honours papers in Philosophy of Education (different universities). I haven't introduced myself to the PeDaGoG group as I am no longer actively engaged in any forms of teaching. But I have been thinking about 'alternative' education for a long time, and still have an interest in it. In terms of what I might be able to contribute to the resources which you and Sujit are compiling, I thought that a reading list (with web links where relevant) to the main advocates for alternative pedagogies from the 1970s to today might be useful. I could start a draft for sharing with everyone, and they could add whoever they think is also important. I have no experience with children under 12, so what I can contribute is mostly about older students. Hopefully there will be members of PeDaGoG who are knowledgeable about doing things differently with small children - like the young man on the webinar who spoke about engaging children in livestock care by starting with teaching them to vaccinate chickens. For doing things differently with older students, George Lakey's 2010 book *Facilitating Group Learning: Strategies for Success with Adult Learners* is essential. There is more about this approach here - https://www.trainingforchange.org/ Lakey and the other trainers for change put a lot of emphasis on forming the group and stabilising it, so that everyone feels included, before they move on to whatever the actual content of the course or workshop is supposed to be. This might be important for having more long-term success with your residential courses. It is hard for people to have commitment to a project or cause and working on it with each other unless this goal is valued and reinforced as much or more than any facts or tools they may acquire from a class. I hope this is helpful. nga mihi nui (warm greetings) Christine On 5/04/22 03:06, Pallavi Varma Patil wrote: Dear all, 1. A new article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website - "Hola, Gustavo!"- A personal tribute to Gustavo Esteva
by Pallav Das 05 Apr '22

Friends, A new article, "Hola, Gustavo!"- A personal tribute to Gustavo Esteva has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website: https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/hola-gustavo-a-personal-tribute-to-g… The struggle for progressive “alternatives” suffered a great loss last month when one of its prominent standard bearers, Gustavo Esteva, passed away at the age of 86 in Mexico. In his remarkable and revolutionary journey spanning over six decades, Esteva redefined the very idea of “societal transformation”, and charted a unique course of praxis and theory for the realization of his vision. In this personal tribute, Ashish Kothari recounts Esteva's enormous contributions, and their collaboration in the quest for meaningful “alternatives”. A new article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website - "Is Italy’s new vision for environmental protection a real commitment to carbon neutrality?"
by Pallav Das 04 Apr '22

04 Apr '22

Friends, A new article, "Is Italy’s new vision for environmental protection a real commitment to carbon neutrality?" has been uploaded to the Radical Ecological Democracy website: https://radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/is-italys-new-vision-for-environment… As the need to address climate change and other environmental crises becomes increasingly critical, many countries have found it necessary to amend their national constitutions to strengthen existing provisions for environmental protection, and even introduce new ones. This past February, the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament passed legislation to amend two crucial Articles in the Constitution to align the country with the rest of Western Europe’s progressive vision on climate intervention. Fausto Corvino and Mitja Stefancic discuss the promise and challenges inherent in this significant move, particularly as the energy fallout from the on-going Russia-Ukraine conflict causes complex and worrying problems for Italy.
