STOP DESIGN THINKING - Save yourselves from design thinkers
by Jinan K B 23 Jun '23

23 Jun '23

STOP DESIGN THINKING I have uploaded a paper at Academia and medium about how to understand the modern mindset by examining the term design thinking. Join me to discuss this https://www.academia.edu/s/b416e3384b or you can read about the same at https://jinankb.medium.com/stop-design-thinking-c6ffc24148d1 One doesn’t require an anthropologist, sociologist, psychologist, and least of all a cognitive scientist to understand the modern mindset. Just a bit of common sense (the most uncommon in modernity which is what schooling takes away) will do. A proper examination of the term ‘design thinking’ will do. How they bring in two totally diverse phenomena together in words and pretend the job is done. This is the same drama with first fragmenting knowledge into various subjects and making the pretense of integrating all by just creating a few terms- multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, etc… It is interesting another nature of the modern mindset which can be called an ‘afterthought’. This means first destroy, make this as default and then pretend for the first time a solution is provided. Take the usage ‘out of the box thinking. A much-celebrated usage…. The stupidity of the modern mindset is that they are not asking why are you in the box in the first place. Who put us in? So, our default setting is in the box, fragmented……. And instead of trying to find the root cause, a temporary solution is offered. Please take a look and join the discussion on the RED listserv and the website discussion forum. The author is copied here in case you would like to contact him directly. Also, Pluto Press is offering the RED readers an exclusive 30% discount on the book - the details are available at the end of the article. This discount ends on the 30th of April/2022. Best, Pallav

It is an emerging knowledge movement that is slowly building all over the world. A part of this movement can be described as a network of ‘eco-versities’—people, organizations, and communities who are reclaiming knowledge systems and a cultural imaginary to restore and re-envision learning processes that are meaningful and relevant to the challenges of our times. Although diverse in its origins, these different pedagogical initiatives both critique the existing education systems, and cultivate new practices to regenerate ecological, social, and cultural ecosystems, whilst also reflecting on the meanings of ‘home’ as locality and as an ‘economy’: hence the name ‘eco-versities’. Dear all, This latest article arguing for re-imagining governance and organizing societies from a bioregional perspective gathering experiences from South Asia and Latin America might be of interest. Annual Calendar for Webinars amongst PeDAGoG members
by Pallavi Varma Patil 08 Mar '22

08 Mar '22

Deal All: Thank you very much for filling up the profile pages. The Member page sheet looks fantastic. 110 members and diverse and incredible work that gives such a hopeful glimpse of counter currents in Education and Activism worldwide! As discussed in the previous meetings, we are hoping to organize a few online seminars in which group members volunteer to present their work. The work can be related to a *course, a pedagogical method, a research project (ongoing or one that is being conceptualized), or a working research paper.* The goal is to kickstart some activity from which all of us can learn. Our working group member, Mohan, has cleverly created a new sheet called 'Seminar_signup' in the same PeDAGoG member list link. It helps to not only see the webinars in one go but also cross check the profile of the speakers. And so in that new sheet you can choose a time slot for any month of 2022, beginning April. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sY1zrrRvYYh0l-6qCmRjQJwKun4BJMOH7jR… Sujit and I, for example , are offering the first such webinar on our Living Utopias Initiative on April 1st,2022. (An easy to remember date!;) Friends from another network called The EDUCERE Alliance ( https://www.educerealliance.org/) will also join in for this webinar. We will soon be sending a poster out with the webinar link with the help of Ashish's team and Upamanyu. There can be one more slot in April too if there is readiness to present. Otherwise we can offer a monthly webinar series. The other working group member, Irene, stressed on the importance of having an annual calendar upfront of PeDaGoG webinars/events amongst us and announcing the events early. As this will help us all block our calendars in advance. Our request is to (as much as possible) choose the time that works for most time zones. We are hoping to have anywhere between 4 and 6 seminars a year, to begin with. We look forward to your support. Please write to us if you have any questions/suggestions. FW: [stopdesignerbabies-announce] WEDNESDAY: Why Your Movement Should Oppose Designer Babies - a mini-conference
by Christian Stalberg 07 Mar '22

07 Mar '22

Why Your Movement Should Oppose Designer Babies - a mini-conference March 9, 2022, 5-8 PM GMT online. Register here <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-your-movement-should-oppose-designer-bab…> With Vandana Shiva, Donna Dickenson, Tina Stevens, Claire Robinson, Sarah Boone, Pete Shanks, Bob Phelps and others. Organised by Stop Designer Babies <https://stopdesignerbabies.org/> , Gen-ethisches Netzwerk <https://www.gen-ethisches-netzwerk.de/> (Germany), Alliance for Humane Biotechnology <http://www.humanebiotech.org/> (USA), GeneEthics <http://geneethics.org/> (Australia). International scientists’ groups are pushing for the creation of genetically modified (GM) designer babies, and in 2023 there will probably be an attempt to legalise them in the UK <https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/clampdown-on-useless-ivf-extras-2xdtglq60> . Although it’s clear that allowing GM babies would have harmful effects on human rights and basic human equality, some social movements have not yet taken up this issue. Our panel of speakers from feminist, anti-racist, disability rights, working class, and green movements will explain why all these movements must oppose designer babies. This will be followed by a panel of international speakers that will explain why over 70 countries already ban GM babies. Only a global ban on the creation of cloned or GM designer babies will ensure that minorities and global society in general is protected from human genetic engineering. Schedule of mini-conference 5 - 5.30pm Introduction to basic technology and biology of GM babies 5.30 Break 5.35 - 6.45 Panel of feminist, anti-racist, disability rights, working class and environmental activists 6.45 Break 6.50 – 8.00 International panel on the need for a global ban Register here <https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-your-movement-should-oppose-designer-bab…> For more information, or to be kept informed about SDB events, contact <mailto:[email protected]> info(a)stopdesignerbabies.org. Fwd: WAR BY OTHER NAMES / Act 2
by Alessandra Pomarico 06 Mar '22

06 Mar '22

dear friends and comrades, sorry for the last minute forwarding... lots of organizings on different levels... .. please, if you are interested in following these conversations (they will be happening every Sunday with different invited guests) , feel free to subscribe the mailing list writing to : <assembling(a)16beavergroup.org> or to <mai(a)16beavergroup.org> ---------- Dear Friends, Comrades, We started this process of assembling together virtually nearly 2 years ago. We never could have imagined then, that this process could become such a rich communal infrastructure for sharing our urgent questions and tending to them together. Thanks to each of you for nourishing and creating this space of trust and generosity. It is in this spirit that we would like to invite you this Sunday March 6, 12pm for the second act of War By Other Names. Together with Olga Kopenkina and Dmitry Vilensky, we have imagined this summit-in-acts as an attempt to create a space to think together and consider potential actions responding to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. This week is Dmitry's turn to introduce the day. Rather than write a text, he thought to share a question and potential heading to begin our conversation: Learning to Resist in Times of Wars Irina Zherebkina from Kharkiv, Yevgenia Belorusets and Mikola Rydny from Kyiv are among those invited who have said they would like to join. Below you will find login details and the short introduction for Sunday and the summit. _____________________________________ SUNDAY'S SUMMIT Please Note: Start time is 12pm Unique Login and Password Sunday March 6th, 2022 12:00 PM (EST) https://zoom.us/join Meeting ID: 934 0924 8883 Passcode: Exter __________________________________ INVITATION This Sunday, March 6th, we would like to invite you to the second encounter and share with you Dmitry Vilensky's question: Learning to resist in times of wars __________________________________ INTRODUCTION TO WAR BY OTHER NAMES Since 2020, we have been testing assembling drawing on friendships old and new from all the various parts of our shared planet, considering the current conjuncture. We felt then, in the urgencies of 'lockdown' and imposed 'social distancing' to find new ways of recomposing the cartographies of struggle in the face of what could only be another crisis through which states and capital would opportunistically manipulate toward their advantage. Our thesis has been confirmed time and again as states, especially those bearing the imprint of supremacist mandates, imperial or colonial histories, have used in the most wretched manner the pandemic and its conditions of distraction to further their capacities to exert and extend their will to govern and control. A global war has been pronounced against a virus. And in the middle of that war many other wars have and are taking place. Wars against indigenous communities, migrant peoples, displaced, houseless peoples, wars of dispossession, wars of occupation, of omission, sometimes as if by accident, organized neglect, in the name of safety, security, law, of restoring territorial integrity or restoring old empires. But these wars are like palimpsests, taking the same writ, the same sheets of proclamation and rewriting over them new conditions, new rules, new impositions, and new justifications. Amidst the seas of war are floating peoples, communities, multitudes who struggle to find a side, a way, a path toward autonomy, subsistence, if not bare survival. The current invasion by Russia of Ukraine is a moment of intensification in an ongoing war, which inherits the legacies of a cold war and the hot wars which preceded it, always risking to spill into surrounding territories and justifying new forms of weaponry for forced forms of pacification. These wars certainly have their locality and specificity but they cannot be read outside also the larger forces at play. But understanding these forces also does not necessarily arrive to understanding how they implicate each of us wherever we are. As we have asked implicity or explicity in our many assemblies, the Conference of Butterflies, a Conference in Shards, as well as our vigil, Fukushima at 10, how to reimagine solidarity today? Over the course of these following weeks, we will try to enter collectively a process of thinking together the various forces at play, the questions this invasion by Russia raises, the various modes of discourse and practice it may call into being in order to struggle against the supremacist, imperial, colonial, fascist, racist, patriarchal, capitalist forces which continue to invent and direct new causes of war and war by other names. __________________________________ NOTE ON ORGANIZATION As a form of organizing this summit, we will try to share responsibility with friends. We began this process leading to this first encounter with a letter from Dmitry Vilensky of Chto Delat on February 6th asking how we may organize something together in response to a potentially devastating war. Given Belarus's implication in this, we asked our friend Olga Kopenkina to join us in situating occasions and inviting friends from Ukraine, Belarus, and beyond to think and share questions. Whatever we have planned or written has seemed to be inadequate by the day as the situation has deteriorated from a potential war or attack to a full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the level of organization, we would like each encounter to have its own approach to thinking and finding a way to discuss what is taking place in a manner that can go beyond news and toward nourishing our ways to conjoin struggles wherever we are situated. __________________________________ Please note, for those who have expressed interest in these weeks to join our assemblings, we have made a list to send to you each week the details for joining. If for any reason you prefer to not receive these updates, we have made it easier. You can simply write an email to: assembling-leave(a)16beavergroup.org
