Reimagining and governing the commons in an unequal world: A critical engagement
by Prakash Kashwan 11 Nov '21

11 Nov '21

Dear PeDAGoG Community: We are excited to share this brand new publication to help create bridges between the scholarship on the Commons by Ostrom Workshop scholars and those who think of the commons from a more critical perspective. Most importantly, we draw on lessons from the commons movements in both urban and rural areas globally. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crsust.2021.100102 Happy reading! Kashwan, Prakash, Praneeta Mudaliar, Sheila R. Foster, and Floriane Clement. 2021. "Reimagining and Governing the Commons in an Unequal World: A Critical Engagement." *Current Research in Environmental Sustainability* 3: 100102. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.crsust.2021.100102 Abstract This article brings to center-stage questions of inequality within the context of contemporary theory and scholarship on the commons. We engage with the commons literature to explore how social, economic, and political inequalities affect who has access to and control over the commons. We make the following key contributions as a way to engage simultaneously and bring together different strands of the literature. One, we take stock of existing scholarship examining the commons and inequality, bringing into sharp focus the role of race, gender, caste, and class, among other dimensions of inequality. Two, we critically engage with scholarship that is pushing the boundaries of commons theory by exploring the processes of commoning or decommoning via “grabbed commons”. Three, by using the lens of commoning and linking it to the historical processes of colonization and capitalist dispossessions, we seek to foster a conversation with scholars working on emancipatory claims to the commons. Based on such a synthesis, we offer a research agenda to broaden the theoretical and empirical scope of commons scholarship, especially with the goal of building stronger bridges with critical property and environmental justice scholarship. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Prakash Kashwan, Ph.D. (Google Scholar <https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=SRC3hyMAAAAJ&hl>) (Public Dropbox <https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0khzymm4o1pyh9s/AACctTBrEI7xYeozEgJIGaeOa?dl=0>) Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Connecticut Co-Director, Research Program on Economic and Social Rights, Human Rights Institute Editor, Environmental Politics Vice Chair/Program Chair, Environmental Studies Section, International Studies Association (ISA) University of Connecticut 365 Fairfield Way, Storrs, CT 06269 Phone: 860-486-7951 https://kashwan.net/ <https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkashwan.n…>

Exploring the possibility of spontaneous and autonomous drawing to bridge the gap between the three-dimensional world and the two-dimensional world the screens bring.
by Jinan K B 03 Nov '21

03 Nov '21

Hello I have uploaded a paper at Academia to explore the cognitive potential of spontaneous drawing in early childhood as a discussion paper. Please give feedback https://www.academia.edu/s/4851599f3f Exploring the possibility of spontaneous and autonomous drawing to bridge the gap between the three-dimensional world and the two-dimensional world the screens bring. Abstract Two-dimensional experience is very new to human beings which became part of the general lifestyle only much after the invention of the printing press. One could say only by eighteenth-century literacy occupied the cultural space in Europe. In most of the non-western countries even now, half of the population would still belong to the oral cultural sensibility. The manner in which literacy is being introduced clearly alienates people from the real world and is creating an uprooted way of existence. >From raw food to cooked food was the first major change that took place in the biological nature of human beings. It totally impacted the digestive system in a very deep manner and also impacted total change in behavior and the whole social life changed due to this. The second event that totally changed our biology was our shift from orality to literacy which took place on a large scale after the invention of the printing press. Till then writing was like small craft activity which only a few skilled people could do, who scribed letters into various mediums. It was just like any other craft skill. What cooked food did to the digestive system, literacy did to our cognitive system. It totally changed the cognitive source, cognitive tools, cognitive process, and cognitive foundation or the structure. It completely changed the realm of understanding. The two-dimensionality that literacy brings in, in fact, has created a virtual cognitive realm and many of our experiences are now not only two-dimensional but also vertical. -- Jinan, TEXT DISTORTS, DIGITAL DESTROYS, WORLD AWAKENS http://kbjinan.in/ <http://jinankb.in/> http://ekfoundation.in/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC80rT8Zj1EE8TrzD3UreYfQ www.re-cognition.org https://independent.academia.edu/JinanKodapully 09447121544

A message from Rojava, Syria
by Pallav Das 01 Nov '21

01 Nov '21

Friends, I wanted to share a special message from our colleague and comrade, *Şervîn Nûdem* of the Jineolojî Academy in Rojava (West-Kurdistan) in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, apprising us of the current political situation in Rojava, and how an article on the Radical Ecological Democracy website resonated with her. The article *Şervîn is* referencing in the note below is: https://www.radicalecologicaldemocracy.org/we-thought-it-was-fiction/ In solidarity, Pallav Das Here's *Şervîn's note;* *"As you are asking about the present situation here in Rojava: I don't know how much you are able to follow the news from this region, but Turkey's occupation war with increasing aggression and attacks is continuing. In addition to the military attacks on regions in South Kurdistan which involve repeated use of chemical weapons against HPG guerilla units, also war crimes against the people in Rojava are continuing. More or less daily, community leaders and activists are targeted by Turkish drone attacks in different regions of North Syria and in Shengal. Here we see clearly the horrific results of, "Techno Fascism as a part of Settler Colonialism" as it has been called in the RED-article. I don`t know if Pegasus malware has been involved in these cases, but we witnessed that more than a dozen brave women and men who played an important role in liberating these soils from the IS-fascists, have been executed during the last days due to missile attacks on their cars - especially in Kobanê. We are confronted with a murderous special warfare on all levels, while the international public watches silently. Furthermore Erdogan seems to prepare for another large scale military invasion against the region of Democratic Autonomy in the coming days. As more and more people are discontent with his fascist regime and the economic crisis in Turkey, he tries again to mobilise with nationalist-fundamentalist slogans for another neo-ottoman occupation campaign. Against this everywhere in Rojava the people are full of rage and anger. Together, we are determined to defend our lives, our dignity, the land and the hope of all people living here. Today is Nov, 1st - the World Kobanê Resistance Day. This day has shown us that peoples' international solidarity can gain victory against the fascist mercenary troops of imperialist powers."*
