CFP 4S 2018 - Open Panel: STS as method? (Meta)dimensions of the STS (trans)nations
by Martin Perez Comisso 06 Jan '18

06 Jan '18

Hello, I'm sharing this Call for Papers for a Open Panel 4S 2018 (Sydney, Australia, 29 August to 1 September 2018). A spanish translation is below. Please, share with researchers interested on this topic Best Regards, -- STS as method? (Meta)dimensions of the STS (trans)nationsConvenors: Martin Perez Comisso & Joshua Loughman Arizona State University; ENG Summary: Methodologies are a relevant question for Science and Technology Studies. As a transdisciplinary field, the codes and practices that researchers engage in with their own practices are diverse and plural. For a long time this question was tangentially discussed, giving an open space to creation and experimentation. But, in the fourth Handbook of STS (Felt, Fouche, Miller and Smith-Doerr, 2017), the editors focus on the field’s methods for first time. John Law (2017) introduces in the first essay the idea of STS as a method, looking in several dimensions of our own practices as case studies, rooted in the history of Science and Technology, trying to differentiate national and disciplinary traditions and influences. This panel extends this discussion and explores how we understand these methods (and others). Considering ourselves members of different ‘nations’ of researchers, we reflect on how the coexistence of diversity, for different nationalities and epistemic cultures and trajectories (Knorr Cetina, 1995), configures expressions about utility, reliability, participation, and hegemony that keep open to conversation and research about these scholarly practices for STS. Is STS a single method, as Law indicates? What are our present methods? Are all the methods situated in their countries and cultures? Who are the ‘nations’ in these methods? Where are the boundaries to ‘hidden’ methods? What is the future of these methods? We expect the panel to embrace these questions and to unravel, a bit, the questions that the focus on method(s) offers. *Fecha límite: 1 de febrero de 2018Presentaciones: https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/ <https://4s2018sydney.org/call-for-papers-open-panels/>Más información: https://4s2018sydney.org <https://4s2018sydney.org>* -- Martín Pérez Comisso / @mapc <https://twitter.com/mapc> PhD student, Human and Social Dimension of Science and Technolgy SFIS 土龍 Oscillating from 1988 http://about.me/mapc / +56 9 7-7548114 (CL)

CfP Technologies and Improvisation, Conference 7-9 feb 2018, Göteborg
by Johan Söderberg 02 Jan '18

CALL FOR PAPERS: Technologies and Improvisation: Tools and theories for uncertain futures Nordic Summer University Ad Hoc Symposium February 7-9, 2018, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Hosted by the Cybioses: Shaping Human-Technology Futures Group of the Nordic Summer University, together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, at University of Gothenburg. We invite scholars, artists, technologists and other professionals working or writing on future technologies to take part in our first Nordic Summer University symposium. The aim of the symposium is to bring together theorists, designers and technologists. Together we want to discuss practices of making and the social and cultural impact of future technologies. How can philosophical questions support the development of technologies? How in turn can technological practices and development inform philosophical and sociological theories? And how can both making and theorizing help us imagining future technologies and their impact on societies? Guided by these questions we want to develop a philosophy for makers and a better practice for philosophy. Our first symposium investigates the role of improvisation in technological development and philosophy. As technologists and theorists, we improvise when we don’t know how to continue. We improvise when we move in unknown territory or when time does not allow for a systemic investigation. And yet, improvisation follows patterns. Is there is good and bad improvisation, and good and bad improvisers? What role does improvisation play in the development of technologies? How can technologies improve improvisation? And what can different practices and theories of improvisation tell us about future technologies? We explicitly want to foster exchange between humanities-based researchers, makers and artists. The interdisciplinary discussion of technological futures has yet to find its forms within and outside of academia. Our aim is, therefore, to test different forms of presentation. We encourage participants to briefly present one particular technology or one particular theory about a technology. The individual presentations will be complemented with open discussion rounds and documentation rounds. The focus on brief showcases, together with the small format of the workshop allows for extended and deep discussions, and prevents endless boring paper sessions. Topics we hope to discuss during the symposium include: • philosophy of improvisation • the relationship between technology and improvisation • designing for improvisation • improvisation, technology and survival • technology and improvisation in conflict and crisis management • improvisation in design • design fictions • improvisation in previous futures (historical case studies) • cognition and improvisation • improvisation and AI • improvisation in engineering • prediction and improvisation in future studies • improvisation in the art world How to participate We are looking for brief technological and philosophical showcases limited to 20 minutes. You could either present a particular technology, particular theory or case study you are working on. To submit a proposal please send via email to the coordinators: Palle Dahlstedt: palle (dot) dahlstedt (at) gu (dot) se Rafael Dernbach: rkd32 (at) cam (dot) ac (dot) uk Johan Söderberg: johan (dot) soderberg (at) sts (dot) gu (dot) se 1. A written short proposal (max. 300 words) with a title 2. A short bio (max. 200 words) It is possible to attend the symposium without presenting. In this case, please just email a short bio. The deadline to submit proposals is January 5th, 2018. Notifications of accepted presentations will be sent before the preliminary program is announced on January 8th, 2018 on www.nordic.university. Registration and Fee Students, freelancers, unemployed: 30€ Those associated with institutions: 45€ This cost includes meals (lunches, coffee breaks, and conference dinner) as well as conference materials. Arrival: 7.2.2018 Departure: 9.2.2018 Scholarship A limited number of participants with low income (i.e. students and unemployed) can ask to have the fee waived. Subsidies are conditioned on available funds. A limited number of free accommodations in private homes are also available. Please mention in your application, if you want to be considered for a scholarship and/or private accommodation, together with a motivation. JoPP: “OPEN” EOI & CFP #13
by Mathieu ONeil 27 Nov '17

27 Nov '17

<apologies for multiple posts> Journal of Peer Production: “OPEN” EOI & CFP Issue #13 The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run peer-reviewed journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. JoPP is an open-access journal that allows readers to read, download, copy, distribute and link to the full texts of articles. Authors license works under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) and retain full copyright in their work. In terms of research, we have published ten landmark issues exploring the interconnection of peer production with activism, political economy, bio and hardware hacking, free software, value and currency, shared machine shops, the law, state policies, feminism and queer issues, alternative infrastructures, and waged labour. We will publish our eleventh issue on peer production and urbanism in January 2018 and our twelfth on the institutionalisation of shared machine shops in May 2018. In terms of practice, we have debated policy decisions on a public and archived mailing list. We have renovated the scientific peer review system by publishing not only reviews of papers, but also – in order to fully appreciate the impact of reviews – original submissions of articles. We have launched a “signalling” system so that imperfect articles can be published rapidly, whilst maintaining the standards and reputation of the journal. Having defined the field of peer production studies and put into practice peer production principles, we now seek to foster new avenues and partnerships. We are calling this new phase in the development of the Journal of Peer Production “OPEN”. At the root of “OPEN” is the fact that we now live in an era where exclusion and inequality are being justified by overtly racist, even fascist, ideas. It is therefore more important than ever for progressives to develop viable alternatives to plutocracy and environmental destruction which highlight peer values such as inclusion and openness. There are two parts to JoPP “OPEN”: “OPEN” EOI and “OPEN” CFP. JOPP: “OPEN” EOI We are calling for “OPEN” editorial Expressions of Interest from people wanting to develop their own take on peer production. This means we are offering our website and network of reviewers for the production and dissemination of activist or scientific interventions in the field of peer production. We are open to accounts of projects, to explorations of special interests, to analysis of the “infrastructures of the commons” (universal income systems, cooperatives and unions, free public services), etc. We are particularly interested in initiatives that would disseminate peer production knowledge and values to audiences beyond the academic and activist communities. Please write to the JoPP general public list <jopp-public AT lists.ourproject.org> with your ideas or if you prefer to discuss them in confidence please contact the private JoPP editorial team mailing list <jopp-editorial AT lists.ourproject.org>. We look forward to hearing from you! JOPP: “OPEN” CFP ISSUE #13 We are also announcing a Call for Papers for issue #13 of the Journal of Peer Production on the theme of “OPEN”. This means that contributions can explore any aspect of peer production. Please refer to past issues for examples and to our style guidelines for guidance on the type of contributions we accept. Hi everyone Following on from our discussion on jopp-public re. the future of jopp I am proposing the following. I posted an early version to jopp-editorial a couple of days ago, cc-ing the editors of jopp #11 and #12 to make sure they were OK with the scheduling. Panos, Kat, Maurizio and Angela already expressed support (sorry if I forgot someone). This is a preliminary draft so discussion and revision welcome. I will be in Brisbane next Wednesday 22 November at an event organised by Angela on "good data" and we might print some flyers to launch this initiative so would be good to finalise the text by Monday 21. In particular, we need one or two co-editors for jopp#13. Please respond to this thread or contact me off-list if interested. cheers Mathieu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= JoPP “OPEN”: OPEN-CFP and OPEN-EOI The Journal of Peer Production (JoPP) is a volunteer-run scientific journal which has since 2011 both researched and put into practice the principles of peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Note: a previous version of this call had incorrect dates for the symposium. This is the corrected version. CALL FOR PAPERS: Technologies and Improvisation: Tools and theories for uncertain futures Nordic Summer University Symposium February 7-9, 2018 University of Gothenburg, Sweden Hosted by the Cybioses: Shaping Human-Technology Futures Group of the Nordic Summer University, together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, at University of Gothenburg. The individual presentations will be complemented with open discussion rounds and documentation rounds. The focus on brief showcases, together with the small format of the workshop allows for extended and deep discussions, and prevents endless boring paper sessions. Call for proposals: Good Data book chapters
by Angela Daly 19 Nov '17

19 Nov '17

Good Data Call for Proposals for an INC Theory on Demand edited book *Editors: Angela Daly (Queensland University of Technology), Kate Devitt (Queensland University of Technology) & Monique Mann (Queensland University of Technology).* In recent years, there has been an exponential increase in the collection, aggregation and automated analysis of information by government and private actors, and in response to this there has been a significant critique regarding what could be termed ‘bad’ data practices in the globalised digital economy. These include the mass gathering of data about individuals, in opaque, unethical and at times illegal ways, and the increased use of that data in unaccountable and potentially discriminatory forms of algorithmic decision-making by both state agencies and private companies. Issues of data ethics and data justice are only likely to increase in importance given the totalizing datafication of society and the introduction of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation. In order to paint an alternative, more optimistic but still pragmatic picture of the datafied future, this open access edited collection will examine and propose what could be termed ‘good’ and ‘ethical’ data practices, underpinned by values and principles such as (but not limited to): · privacy/regulation/information security by design · due process rights · procedural legitimacy · the protection of individual and collective autonomy · digital sovereignty · digital anti-discrimination · data and intersectionality · ethical labour practices · environmental sustainability. Chapters should be short contributions (2500-5000 words) which can take differing forms, for example: - Manifestos for Good Data - Position papers - Traditional academic chapters - Interviews Chapters can be theoretical takes or provocations on what Good Data is or should be, or can be case studies of particular Good Data projects and initiatives e.g. Indigenous data sovereignty initiatives, data cooperatives etc. Chapters can also be critiques of initiatives/movements which claim to be ethical but in fact fall short. All chapters, including academic ones, should be written in an accessible way and avoid the excessive use of jargon, etc. Academic chapters will be peer-reviewed. Other contributions will be editor-reviewed. We encourage contributions from throughout the world and from different disciplinary perspectives: philosophy, media and communications, cultural studies, STS, law, criminology, information systems, computer science etc. Proposals for chapters (up to 250 words) should be sent to Kayleigh Hodgkinson Murphy (kayleigh.murphy(a)qut.edu.au) by Friday 15 December 2017. Please include a brief biography (indicating whether you are an academic or practitioner, etc) and signal what kind of chapter you are proposing (manifesto/academic chapter, etc). If you have an idea for a chapter and want to discuss it before submitting a proposal, please contact Angela Daly (angela.daly(a)qut.edu.au) as soon as possible. We may be able to pair, for example, practitioners with academic authors on request. Decisions on proposals will be made by mid-January 2017, with a first full draft of chapters to be submitted by 31 March 2018. We anticipate the book will be finalized and launched in late 2018, as part of the Institute of Network Cultures’ Theory on Demand series <http://networkcultures.org/publications/#tods>.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Technologies and Improvisation: Tools and theories for uncertain futures Nordic Summer University Ad Hoc Symposium February 9–11, 2018, University of Gothenburg, Sweden Hosted by the Cybioses: Shaping Human-Technology Futures Group of the Nordic Summer University, together with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, at University of Gothenburg. Topics we hope to discuss during the symposium include: · philosophy of improvisation · the relationship between technology and improvisation · designing for improvisation · improvisation, technology and survival · technology and improvisation in conflict and crisis management · improvisation in design · design fictions · improvisation in previous futures (historical case studies) · cognition and improvisation · improvisation and AI · improvisation in engineering · prediction and improvisation in future studies · improvisation in the art world How to participate We are looking for brief technological and philosophical showcases limited to 20 minutes. You could either present a particular technology, particular theory or case study you are working on. To submit a proposal please send via email to the coordinators Palle Dahlstedt palle.dahlstedt(a)gu.se<mailto:[email protected]> Rafael Dernbach rkd32(a)cam.ac.uk<mailto:[email protected]> Johan Söderberg johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se<mailto:[email protected]> 1. The Nordic Summer University (NSU) is a Nordic network for research and interdisciplinary studies. NSU is a nomadic, academic institution, which organises workshop-seminars across disciplinary and national borders. Since it was established in 1950, Nordic Summer University has organised forums for cultural and intellectual debate in the Nordic and Baltic region, involving students, academics, politicians, and intellectuals from this region and beyond. Decisions about the content and the organisational form of the NSU lay with its participants. The backbone of the activities in the NSU consists of its thematic study circles. In the study circles researchers, students and professionals from different backgrounds collaborate in scholarly investigations distributed regularly in summer and winter symposia during a three-year period.
