I think an issue for art/sound would be good, but I'm not (at this stage) putting my hand up for it :P On the Elsevier note, has everyone seen this? https://boingboing.net/2018/11/03/balkanizing-the-balkanizers.html?fbclid=I… On Wed, 7 Nov 2018 at 14:07, jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org<mailto:[email protected]> <jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: Send JoPP-Public mailing list submissions to jopp-public(a)lists.ourproject.org<mailto:[email protected]> To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/R6rFC3QNl1SX0kNZfOvABP?domain=lists.ourpr…> or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to jopp-public-request(a)lists.ourproject.org<mailto:[email protected]> You can reach the person managing the list at jopp-public-owner(a)lists.ourproject.org<mailto:[email protected]> When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of JoPP-Public digest..." So many points, so little time!!! Art stuff = Steve is a musician and I've been toying with the idea of sending out a new CFP for sound / art related to peer production / open access but did not get round to it because WORK. So, ah, Steve, what do you reckon? Too much to organise, or possible? Kountergemonik stuff = I like the idea of a celebration, good to be positive. I also would like to move forward concretely. This may be a case of slackness leading to greatness i.e. my job was to contact the OA journals that were suggested on this list to ask them to contribute a paper and a few thoughts re OA. I did not do this yet but that means we can now include a new dimension: what should be done? In my mind there are two questions really. The second one is going to sound grandiose to some but needs to be asked, I think. A-How can we reduce the commercialisation of research? I have some ideas, others here might also, other OA people might have some. So that's positive, may lead to concrete change and we can actually do something to further this. B-But - even if we somehow managed to release the stranglehold of Elsevier and their ilk around research, what would that change in terms of industrial capitalism's destruction of the planet? cheers Mathieu ________________________________ From: Kat Braybrooke <kat.braybrooke(a)gmail.com<mailto:[email protected]>> Sent: Wednesday, November 7, 2018 3:03 To: andrew.murphie(a)gmail.com<mailto:[email protected]>; Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Cc: Mathieu O'Neil Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] Future of Journal of Peer Production (JoPP): the end of the line? hey all, maybe this is a crazy idea, so please feel free to discard - but! i did want to add that the tone of andrew's response really resonated for me in the sense that, in a way, while the hegemonies of traditional academic publishing (and its ever-oppressive competitive rating systems) continue to solidify, this also feels like a special moment to celebrate the successes of all of those /other/ ways that alternative/open access publishing efforts have created their own forms of counter-hegemony to subvert the messages of the mainstream - manifestations that would make the likes of antonio gramsci proud, i think. so, i wonder if there could be some way to co-create a special issue which is also a coming-together of several of our journals/publishing projects at once - with the theme of not only reflecting on the effects of the myriad embodiments of labour we have brought into the world (and the means of production associated with those / the exhaustion we all feel from it all) but also on celebration - of what we have accomplished separately, and together? this mega-gathering (or, perhaps, party) could include, and not be limited to, the journal of peer production, the fibreculture journal, projects like meatspace press and their freely-distributed pamphlets https://meatspacepress.org/about/<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/wxkBC4QO8xSz3VkrtXM--W?domain=meatspacepr…> , networked gatherings and multimedia outputs like that of furtherfield https://www.furtherfield.org/<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/S6vIC5QP8ySM4JNAcjrg0Q?domain=furtherfiel…> and the collaboration of any other like-minded crews who too might have an interest. it could manifest both digitally, across our various converged channels, and also in print, through a co-published pamphlet or other creative medium, which could also even include artistic submissions in the tradition of adbusters etc. About – Meatspace Press<https://meatspacepress.org/about/<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/wxkBC4QO8xSz3VkrtXM--W?domain=meatspacepr…>> meatspacepress.org<http://meatspacepress.org> Meatspace Press is a publishing project co-founded by Mark Graham and Joe Shaw. The name comes from the cyberpunk slang for the opposite of cyberspace: real life. Hi Mathieu, We're facing the same kinds of questions at the Fibreculture Journal. We're keeping on keeping on the for moment but we'll see what happens next year. A while back we were almost thinking of an issue on this very issue .. current state of OA publishing, why it's become difficult, the life cycle of journals that are fully OA etc etc .. why the potential has not yet actualised in anything like the way it could ... Something on the future of Scholarly Comms (a term that perhaps becomes redundant when I think about it ... ) Watched Paywall last night. All through my partner and I were talking about something that seemed not to quite come up .. which is the question of labour .... "the modes of peer production" I guess. Although I think JoPP has dealt with this some in #10. I know this has been a huge issue at FCJ. We've all burned out at some stage with the work (and complete lack of credit even in university workloads .. universities love journals but seem to think journal issues just pop out of the ground by themselves like mushrooms). It's also, I have to say, been quite hard to FCJ to make a transition into doing things differently, more in tune with what we see as contemporary events, largely because forces keep pulling us back to traditional forms of credit etc when it comes to the form and process of the work. I know other journals and so forth have faced similar issues. Among these and other questions (very prevalent throughout Paywall, and certainly in my mind as editor of FCJ since at least 2008 ... the first ERA ranking exercise ...and now with UNSW where I work's own "journal rankings" exercise) ... is the whole politics of infrastructure—reactionary we well know—that has developed around publishing now ... at exactly the same time that OA and much more beyond this in terms of "scholarly comms" has thrived, in what I'm calling a "third media revolution" (most of publishing has become even more stubbornly "second media revolution" that is, the reproduction and distribution of representations, e.g. the printing press but also the like of social media) ... So one idea (and I hesitate as I'm beyond time poor) might be a cross many OA venture (as in venture communism) celebration, exploration into the beyond, and also critical evaluation of the contemporary state of whatever-it-is-that-scholarly-comms-is-becoming. This could also be seen as an activist intervention into the state of things, e.g. the politics of scholarly infrastructure, but also, rankings and research organisations especially (think of e.g. Plan S here, although I've recently heard that the "fix is in" on this .. at least in the UK, with Elsevier no less part of the discussions now being undertaken) ... Interventions of commercial consultants, etc. Our entire university is now run via "rankings" etc. Tied of course to the future of the university or whatever-it-it-universities-are-(un)becoming .. then there would be questions about forms of comms and scholarly comms and processes through this; data, media and comms and (to my mind) the almost total lack of understanding of any of these except in the most outmoded and frankly limited way on the part of research organisation and infrastructure high and low , etc etc. None of this means that JoPP should continue, if it has served its purpose. Probably just thinking on my feet. And it could go on without it (which sensibly would leave those who have made JoPP work so well with some time of their hands to do other things. As someone who has spent far too much time on an OA journal, to the detriment of my other work, I can say it is sometimes a good idea to let things go). andrew On Sun, 4 Nov 2018 at 19:59, Mathieu O'Neil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au<mailto:[email protected]><mailto:[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>> wrote: Hi all Steve and I have been working on JoPP #13 OPEN to be released in the first half of 2019. Maurizio proposed something around the commons/STS a while back but this has not translated into concrete action (yet). If no-one is willing / able to continue the JoPP journey it may be time to plan for officially entering hiatus mode after JoPP #13. Perhaps the Journal has served its purpose - raised awareness and knowledge of peer production, linked with makers/activists, fostered a community - and something else needs to take its place? Or, someone(s) want(s) to keep the project moving forward. If that is the case, please say so. CFP for JoPP #14 should go out soon. In addition, the event will deal with innovative measures to differentiate digital platforms which are not built on truly collaborative models. On the other hand, a program addressed to all actors of the Sharing Ecosystem (city governments, companies, foundations, networks, and research centers) will take place on November 12th afternoon on a public meet up, and on November 13th-15th as part of the Smart City World Congress Expo. JOPP board, reviews - DOI / DIY
by Mathieu O'Neil 30 Jul '18

30 Jul '18

Hi all A few reminders for those who have recently joined this list as well as for old-timers who may not have thought about the journal for a while... JoPP editorial board membership To become a member you must be sponsored on this list by a current Journal of Peer Production editorial board member; then you need to post a short statement on this same list introducing yourself, your research interests, and how you intend to contribute to the journal. If no-one objects, after a week, you're in! IT'S THAT SIMPLE. Editorial board members obligations The one obligation is that if you are called on to review a paper for the Journal of Peer Production, you do the damn review. If people start turning down reviews this causes stress for the Issue Editors. So please don't turn us down when you are asked for help - it does not happen very often! DOI/DIY There has been talk on the list of introducing DOIs. My position has always been that if someone feels strongly about something to do with the journal, and this project does not contradict our very minimal set of "rules" (if we can even call them that - we have processes really) then Go For It and Do It Yourself. The one thing I'm not sure about is if this requires money. Not for any ideological reason but because this then introduces a whole new set of responsibilities, administration, potential for abuse, etc., which on the whole seems more like a pain than a benefit. So if we can't have DOIs without money, whoever really wants DOIs should perhaps source an external grant and apply it to that problem, rather than manage it internally? Just a thought. Open to discussion, of course. cheers, Mathieu

Release of Journal of Peer Production Special Issue 12: Makerspaces and Institutions!
by Kat Braybrooke 10 Jul '18

10 Jul '18

Hello all, We are very pleased to announce the release of JoPP's 12th Special Issue: Makerspaces and Institutions. -----> http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-12-makerspaces- and-institutions/ Makerspaces are subjects in a plurality of institutional advances and developments, catching the imaginations of a wide variety of organisations and other actors drawn to a buzz of enticing possibilities. Depending upon the nature of the encounter, makerspaces are becoming cradles for entrepreneurship, innovators in education, nodes in open hardware networks, studios for digital artistry, ciphers for social change, prototyping shops for manufacturers, remanufacturing hubs in circular economies, twenty-first century libraries, emblematic anticipations of commons-based, peer-produced post capitalism, workshops for hacking technology and its politics, laboratories for smart urbanism, galleries for hands-on explorations in material culture... not forgetting, of course, spaces for simply having fun. What kinds of hybrid arrangements emerge through these encounters, and what becomes of the occupied factories for peer production theory? How are institutions reshaping aspirations for autonomous, even democratic, fabrication and experimentation – aspirations that were – and are – important parts of makerspace narratives? And what do these encounters mean for institutions, whether in education, culture, business, development or some other sphere; how are they too evolving through their exposure to grassroots and community making practices? This is a mega issue, exploring institutional developments in all their complexity through 13 research articles (each of which have been peer reviewed and revised through the Journal’s particularly transparent process, which makes all review steps public) and 7 practitioner contributions from key leaders working in the field. Please take a look, tell us what you think, and help us spread the discussions through your networks. This project is the result of a long labour of love for the many makers and thinkers involved, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts. With thanks, Issue 12 Editors Kat Braybrooke and Adrian Smith

Hi Peter, all, You are better placed than me in making the judgement, where the different services are heading, but from what I can tell, OJS seems to be the preferred option. A few weeks ago I attended STS Italia conference and was then asked to sit in a panel on alternative journals, to talk about JoPP. Me and Mathieu will meet at a conference in Copenhagen in a few weeks, and shortly after, Maxigas in Lancaster. We did a marvelous publicity stunt last time at 4S in Barcelona. Let me know if you have any ideas of how to keep the folks talking JoPP. Johan

JoPP website: some thoughts
by Menichinelli Massimo 30 Jun '18

30 Jun '18

Hello all, here are some updates about the JoPP website. One year ago I had a call with Peter Troxler and we discussed several things regarding the website, apologies for the long delay. Here’s a recap about the call and the main issues: In order to avoid any hacking to the website, the back-end (WP) was separated from the public front-end (static html exported from WP); this however disables several functionalities, like the search bar and the pdf generation. This is done in order to avoid that any visitor can interact with the php code (so they cannot hack it)… but then they cannot use any php function at all (like pdf export). Furthermore, it wouldn’t be savy to share the codebase, the configuration or part of them publicly over GitHub or in a similar repository, because we would make it even easier to hack it. Remember that the link to the WP part can be found in the archives of this mailing list… so it’s still possible to find a way to it. It is important that at least we keep WP and the plugins always updated. So, regarding the pdf generation: this of course can be solved in several ways, so for example pdf files can be generated manually and uploaded online, there’s no need for an automatic generation unless the articles changes through time. I’d say: let’s keep it simple. Printing and then saving the articles as pdf files is already a good way, the print css file is well done. See for example my article: https://www.academia.edu/33379609/Makers_as_a_new_work_condition_between_se… Pdf files would be also needed for getting a DOI on Zenodo, this is simple & free to do. Zenodo is also free software (GPL), but there's no need to install it on our server, we can use the main service at CERN. On Zenodo a DOI can also be obtained for datasets and software. This will also make it possible to link each article to the EU projects (and mayne not only EU) that funded it. See for example how I organized the output of the MAKE-IT Horizon 2020 project: https://zenodo.org/communities/make-it/?page=1&size=20 The key question is whether to continue with WP as the back-end, or to move to a completely static site (here GitHub could be adopted) or to use another back-end, maybe one that is specific for journals. If I remember well we thought about keeping the current system for the moment, trying to improve it as much as possible. One major upgrade would be to move to a responsive theme, right now the website is not responsive and reading it on a mobile is way too difficult (we could argue if reading on a mobile is relevant for an online journal, in any case now most of online users are with mobile devices, but having a responsive theme would just make it easier for any device). The key issue here is, if we move to a responsive theme, to minimise the work on its design by adopting existing themes and with little customization (my suggestion: use a Bootstrap-based theme), work on a completely new theme would be too much in terms of time.
