Website transition
by Mathieu O'Neil 27 Apr '20

27 Apr '20

Hi all Please use this thread to discuss website-related issues. Summary: jopp needs to move away from the WordPress CMS, which is becoming unmanageable, to a html site. The most logical move would be to include only PDFs of articles so that the only publishing work to be done for an issue would to (a) upload the PDFs, and (b) build an index page Questions to consider include: * How to transfer the peer reviewed article metadata (original subs, reviews and “signals”)? * How to obtain DOIs for peer reviewed articles? * How to ensure peer reviewed articles are included in search engines such as Google Scholar * Etc Publishing platforms include: * OJS by PKP: https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/ * Scholastica: https://blog.scholasticahq.com/post/beautiful-website-templates-for-scholar… + https://scholasticahq.com/publishing-features * PubPub out of MIT: https://www.pubpub.org/ cheers Mathieu

FOSS and firms: new publications
by Mathieu O'Neil 24 Mar '20

24 Mar '20

Hi all I hope everyone has not been affected too horribly by the pandemic. These are very, very tough times. Yet maybe they also present opportunities for positive social change. For example I've been working with Sophie on putting together "principles and proposals for the commons" for the upcoming Handbook of Peer Production (more on that at a later date). This was in initially conceived in response to the climate crisis so articulated around job losses due to automation, relocalisation and degrowth, and P2PF notions like "design global, manufacture local" or DGML. It's interesting to see how current events are making related initiatives that seemed far-fetched a few months ago, like a basic income and free utilities, a reality in some places. Anyway, I thought I would share some research by myself and others around how some sectors of peer production have been swallowed up by the market. "‘Open source has won and lost the war’: Legitimising commercial–communal hybridisation in a FOSS project" by Mathieu O’Neil, Laure Muselli, Mahin Raissi and Stefano Zacchroli, New Media & Society. Summary: Information technology (IT) firms are paying developers in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects, leading to the emergence of hybrid forms of work. In order to understand how the firm–project hybridisation process occurs, we present the results of an online survey of participants in the Debian project, as well as interviews with Debian Developers. We find that the intermingling of the commercial logic of the firm and the communal logic of the project requires rhetorical legitimation. We analyse the discourses used to legitimise firm–project cooperation as well as the organisational mechanisms which facilitate this cooperation. A first phase of legitimation, based on firm adoption of open licenses and developer self-fulfilment, aims to erase the commercial/communal divide. A second more recent phase seeks to professionalise work relations inside the project and, in doing so, challenges the social order which restricts participation in FOSS. Ultimately, hybridisation raises the question of the fair distribution of the profits firms derive from FOSS. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1461444820907022?journalCode=n… The preprint is available on Zack's publications page: https://upsilon.cc/~zack/research/publications/ This is a follow-up to "Preliminary Report on the Influence of Capital in an Ethical-Modular Project: Quantitative data from the 2016 Debian Survey" by Molly de Blanc, Mathieu O’Neil, Mahin Raissi and Stefano Zacchiroli published in JoPP#10 http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-10-peer-production-and-work/prelimin… In the same issue we also published an article on "From the Commons to Capital: Red Hat, Inc. and the Business of Free Software" by Benjamin Birkinbine http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-10-peer-production-and-work/from-the… Most of you are probably aware that Ben has recently released a book on a very similar topic: "Incorporating the Digital Commons: Corporate Involvement in Free and Open Source Software" (University of Westminster Press, 2020). Just in case you weren't: Summary: In the book, I draw from a critical political economic framework to investigate the intersection of the digital commons and digital capitalism. I use three case studies (Microsoft's history with FLOSS communities, Red Hat's relationship with the Fedora Project, and Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems) to illustrate different dynamics between FLOSS communities and corporations. https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fwww.uwestminsterpress.c… cheers, Mathieu

sponsoring new board member
by Johan Söderberg 31 Jan '20

31 Jan '20

Hi, I would like to sponsor Leandros Savvides as a new editorial board member for JoPP. I have inserted his presentation below, and he subscribes to the list if you want to ask questions to him. Johan Hi everyone, My name is Leandros Savvides, I have recently finished my PhD on the politics and material hacking of 3D printing, composed of ethnographic vignettes from a variety of hackerspaces across UK, Germany, Cyprus. I have presented a couple of times at the FOSS conference in Gothenburg (2015, 2016) and my research interests are revolving around Political Economy of Technoscience, Ethnographies of Hardware and Material Culture from a broad (or sometimes strict) Marxist perspective. I come from social and political theory towards Technoscience, so my work is heavily influenced as such. At the moment I am making a living as a lecturer in Business Management at Global College in Nicosia, Cyprus. However, I would like to keep in touch and get involved more on the aforementioned areas. At the moment I am in the process of working on some papers that I draw from my thesis. So, I could publish and review papers and/or books as well for the community. I am also interested to take part in organising conferences and meetings if this is something you are searching for prospective editors. Thanks in advance, Leandros Savvides

Building commons-based alternatives: A workshop and a conference in Epirus, GR
by Vasilis Kostakis 30 Jan '20

30 Jan '20

Dear all, I am sharing two open calls about a workshop and a conference that will be taking place in Tzoumerka, Epirus <https://www.travelstyle.gr/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/tzoumerka-800x600.jpg> in May 2020. The mountainous Epirus is a previously unspoiled region in Greece that is gearing up for engaging in fossil fuel extraction. Epirus is home to several Natura areas. However, it is also part of a baffling nation-wide search for oil deposits across multiple aquatic and forest ecosystems. The shady proceedings endorsed by all governments of the past years have understandably outraged local communities across the country, which see not only their livelihoods threatened but the well-being of future generations. So, the aim of the workshop is to confront oil drilling activities in Epirus by manufacturing small-scale renewables based on digital commons with local communities. The workshop is titled "Transforming Energy Systems in the Commons Era" and for the open call see here <http://www.p2plab.gr/en/archives/1873>. The second open call concerns the annual *ephemera* conference that will also be taking place in Tzoumerka. *ephemera* is an independent open access journal which has been active for almost two decades with extensive dedicated readership. This year's conference is an attempt to connect with communities, initiatives and activists working on social change and focus on empirical research working towards postcapitalist imaginaries. For more details see here <http://www.ephemerajournal.org/events/materialities-and-socialities-postcap…>. Please consider joining us and share the calls accordingly! All the best, Vasilis -- Vasilis Kostakis Professor of P2P Governance, TalTech Faculty Associate, Harvard University Founder, P2P Lab

Marxist STS, EASST/4S, Prague, Aug 18-21
by Johan Söderberg 30 Jan '20

Maybe of interest to some... submit to open panel on Marxism and STS at the EASST/4S-conference! Marxist STS EASST/4S open panel #107, Prague, 18-21 august Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University), Maxigas (Lancaster University / University of Amsterdam), and Davide Orsini (Mississippi State University) The historical roots of STS go back to Marxism. Many of the issues currently being debated in relation to technology and science begun as debates in-between Marxist intellectuals, notably concerning the status of science and ideology critique. By returning to this history and to Marxist theoretical resources, new insights can be gained when addressing STS questions. This panel invites presentations exploring the Marxist roots of STS as well as new, theoretical work broadly inspired by Marxism. Keywords: Capitalism, Ideology, Critique, Marxism, Class Categories: Knowledge, Theory and Method, Economics, Markets, Value/Valuation OBS.: Deadline 29th February. https://easst.net/easst-4s-2020/

Proposal for JoPP #14
by how＠zoethical.com 28 Aug '19

28 Aug '19

Since nobody posted for a month, and following up with our recent publication with the Journal of Peer Production #11 on Singular Technologies & the Third-TechnoScape[0], we’d like to propose a topic for JoPP #14 on Resistance & Transition. The topic would put in perspective what is resistance, why resist, and resisting to what? as well as the seemingly consensual concept of transition. If you are interested in pursuing this line of thought, we’d be happy to produce a CFP within the next week, and propose a work platform to sustain collaborative inquiry over the next two years up until the publication of JoPP #14. WP entry on JoPP?
by Mathieu O'Neil 12 Aug '19

12 Aug '19

Hi all As a clear form of procrastination I recently visited the WP-EN page on 'peer production' and found there was no mention of the journal. I thought I'd be cautious, as I forgot my WP login a long time ago, so posted the following in the talk page: Section/Link to Journal of Peer Production[edit<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Peer_production&action=edit…>] Hello Wikipedians, Mathieu O'Neil here. I am a researcher who has been working on and publishing about this issue for a while. I am also the founder of the online, peer reviewed Journal of Peer Production which has published 13 issues to date on various aspects of peer production. I think it deserves a mention and a link on this page? Wanted to make sure that would be OK before being bold etc. You can find it here: http://peerproduction.net/ cheers M202.142.60.20<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/202.142.60.20> (talk<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:202.142.60.20&action=e…>) 01:46, 12 August 2019 (UTC) So i guess we'll see if anyone has this on their watchlist and responds... Maybe, in a while, any jopp-list subscribers who are active WP could mosey on over there and say its a swell idea? I know this may sound a bit manipulative but I think the point is valid... cheers Mathieu
