Wikipedia page on the jopp

Hi all As Panos and I slowly (very slowly, with help from Peter) make our way through uploading the final jopp issue on TRANSITION I procrastinate by raising the issue of "how come there is no page on the JoPP in Wikipedia?" The responses may range from the philosophical (why should there be? is it notable?) to the practical (no reliable sources, buddy). Well as for the first - why not? Since we are wrapping up, we need to preserve the legacy. And as for sources, we now have at least one rock-solid ref. (that I know of): George Dafermos' chapter on "Prophets and advocates" which deals with the journal's origins and impact. In the HoPP, which is a VERY legitimate source. Chapter 7 is available here btw: http://peerproduction.net/projects/books/the-handbook-of-peer-production/ As I have a direct stake I don't think I should initiate this but if anyone is interested or wants to help - any Wikipedians in good standing out there? - I'd be happy to provide ideas around content etc. Please respond here or offlist if you prefer. cheers Mathieu

JoPP#15 will be the last issue of the JoPP
by Mathieu O'Neil 25 Jul '21

Hi all With this message, we are making it official: the Journal of Peer Production is coming to a close. This does not mean our work is stopping, only that this particular peer-reviewed, research journal format has run its course. Please find below a summary of this decisions, and of some issues that need to be resolved. cheers, Mathieu, on behalf of the JoPP ed team 1-Journal of Peer Production: this is the end, my friend 2-JoPP#15 TRANSITION: call for contributions - memories of the Journal of Peer Production 3-Archiving: preserving the legacy of the Journal of Peer Production 4-Journal of Peer Production resources: email lists and Twitter 1-JoPP: this is the end, my friend Last year I posted a message about the future of the JoPP, and my interest in setting up a ‘think thank’ for the commons. See https://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/jopp-public/2020-April/000832.html Following that message, a debate ensued and eventually it was decided to send out a CFP for a JoPP#15 TRANSITION issue, edited by Panos and myself. This issue has been progressing, but we decided to postpone publication (originally slated for June 2021) to September 2021. Contributors have been informed. I continued working on the think tank idea and together with Zack and other colleagues published the newly formed Digital Commons Policy Council’s inaugural report, on the Coproduction of open source software by volunteers and big tech firms, in June. See https://apo.org.au/node/312607 In the meantime, discussions about the future of the JoPP were happening on the journal's editorial team mailing list and it eventually became clear that the wind had fallen out the sails of the JoPP ship, with no-one really committed to keep it going. So back in May I posted to JoPP-ed: "I've been thinking about the JoPP post-#15 TRANSITION and while I like the idea of having a debate to figure things out, it also opens the door to some really bad outcomes. For example, the journal could sort of peter out over a long period of time, or people who are not reliable and/or not competent could volunteer to 'take over,' leading to negative outcomes. Neither of these scenarios is appealing and I think it is necessary to plan ahead. It's time to face reality and accept that if no-one on the ed team is able to take on a new issue, this basically tells us that time is up. As the person who proposed setting up a journal at the fourth Oekonux conference back in 2009, set up a CMS using Plone with Oekonux, then left Oekonux and re-set up another entirely new CMS using WordPress with the help of the P2PFoundation, and tried to make sure issues came out regularly since, I feel it is my duty to protect the legacy of the journal and to finish things cleanly. So: I am proposing to formally announce when JoPP#15 TRANSITION is released that it will be the last issue of the JoPP. Better to finish on a high and positive note than to let things disintegrate bit by bit. Hope you will agree. @Peter: apologies for not answering before re varia. Please do as you see fit. We will need to discuss archiving / preserving the site. I will ask for input and post ideas here. If people want to use the mailing list to discuss related initiatives, that is of course fine. I am very proud of the rich and diverse issues we have put out. For me JoPP has been a great way to have fun and propose new ways of thinking and presenting academic and activist/artistic content. But after more than ten years doing the JoPP I felt the need to do something different: I have been working for a while now on a new project, a think tank which will continue the work of the JoPP, but with less of a theoretical and more of a policy angle: the Digital Commons Policy Council. We will be releasing our first report on the coproduction of open source software by firms and volunteers in a couple of weeks. Panos joined me in this initiative in the early days and then decided he was unable to continue. Thanks to all for your continued support of this initiative. Special shout-outs to Johan and Maurizio who were there from the start, and to Peter and Kit for their fantastic work since joining! Hope this makes sense to everyone and that you are not upset, but it really does seem like the best course of action." Other editorial team members then commented: they were sad but understood and agreed that it was more elegant to finish neatly. 2-JoPP#15: call for contributions - memories of JoPP Since JoPP#15 is named TRANSITION it offers a good opportunity to reflect on the passing of the journal, so we now call on all members of the JoPP community to contribute to this final issue: please send to transition(a)peerproduction.net<mailto:[email protected]> (or post here) before 15 August your best memories of the JoPP (max 200 words? or more?): Favourite issue? Favourite flame war? Favourite contribution of the JoPP? Or whatever else you like... We will compile all contributions - have at it! 3-Archiving: Preserving the JoPP We also need to think about making sure the journal endures. I asked a computer science colleague (Zack) about options and posted what he wrote to jopp-ed: =-=-=-=-=-= "It depends on what you want to keep maintaining in the medium/long term. I'm guessing you do *not* want to keep maintaining a website based on Wordpress up, because that requires updating the software, verifying people have not broken it, etc. That's fine. But do you want to maintain (and pay for) the domain http://peerproduction.net/ with *some* website available at it or not? That would be nice to avoid breaking links pointing to JoPP papers that might be out there, but it is undoubtfully some burden. If you want to keep the domain running, the best way would be turning the Wordpress-based website into a static HTML website. I confess I've never actually done that myself, but it has been done and it is doable with limited effort. You will then have to keep paying for the domain registration and some static HTML hosting (maybe it can even be hosted for free on GitHub/GitLab, now that I think of it, but that does have some ethical implications) for the foreseeable future. If you do not want to keep the domain running (beware: this also means that someone *else* might squat the domain in the future, and put there something else), then what should be done is making sure that all webpages are archived, at the version you want, on archive.org, before you shut it down. This too can be automated with some limited effort. Independently of these two options, I think it would be nice to also archive the papers of all issues onto a open access platform. I don't remember what's the status of PDF versions of the JoPP papers. If you do have them for all papers, they should be submitted to arxiv or something similar. (I've no idea if this is automatable or not, it will need to be verified.) Doing this will help with citations, article indexing, and search." I then commented: "1-domain name: good point re broken links / squatted. But, who pays? 2-convert CMS to static html: this seems like a no-brainer to me. Hopefully the PDFs will not cause a problem. I've looked into this very briefly and it seems it can be done with simply static, which we already use...? 3-archive.org: also seems like a good idea? not sure how to do it though. 4-arxiv: if not automatable, that seems like a lot of work...? So, these are some options. There could be others: if we have a static html site it could conceivably be hosted wherever people have capacity to support the downloading of PDFs, for ex." Peter responded: "The main concern is the findability of the papers. Anything URL based, i.e. dependent on ‘peerproduction.org’ requires the domain to be live in some form and providing articles based on that domain. Between the two of us, we can afford this until we die … and we might even set up a scheme to trade the stewardship of a few hundred of static html pages (or pointers to them) for generations to come. … this could even be a scheme to perpetuate the JoPP for a very long time if we could set up a team of trustees who care for an html (plus pdf) repository. The DIY approach of which I am a fan. There are for sure other routes to preserving the journal, for instance through libraries. I had dealings with a University library in Germany for another OS papers project which I could try to reactivate. The beauty of such an approach is to make content available in an academically accessible environment (metadata and all!). It might break URLs (although we could provide a technical resource to handle this for a number of years, since permanent URL redirection is part of the grammar of machine-readable URL technology). Both routes require attention — and there are more, as Zach points out, like archive.org, arxiv etc. — and there is no route that guarantees longevity (although I believe that dedicated stewardship for a resource either through personal (the DIY approach) or institutional (the libraries approach) commitment is preferable over undisclosed agendas of projects with rather short-term (in non-internet terms) credentials. So, while the activist me advocates the first (DIY) route, the academic me tells me to get back to "that German library that wanted to preserve your proceedings” — which I prefer in terms of being and staying relevant in academia. This will take some time, but we’re not in a hurry, so if you agree — and anyone else is welcome to chime in — I shall put my academic me to work. / Peter" So, that’s where we are at re archiving the JoPP. We will need to sort this out after #15 comes out. Any help would be appreciated! 4-JoPP resources: email lists and Twitter Finally, there is the question of the JoPP resources e.g. the two mailing lists and the Twitter account. No-one ‘owns’ these but following our do-ocratic principles they should be put to work usefully. Since the Digital Commons Policy Council will be operating in the same space and for the same ends as the JoPP, until someone else comes up with a better idea, I am proposing that some of the JoPP resources be repurposed for the DCPC. Specifically, after JoPP#15 comes out, and the end of the journal is made public: The jopp-ed mailing list ceases being used for the journal and starts being used for the DCPC. The @peer_production Twitter account ceases being used for the journal and starts being used for the DCPC. As for the jopp-public email list (this list): no change, this can be used by anyone interested in peer production, the digital commons, etc, to communicate with others about these topics. Hope everyone agrees with this proposal – if not, speak up, and let’s discuss! :-) Cheers, Mathieu

***Apologies for multiple exposure*** The News and Media Research Centre is pleased to announce the launch of the Digital Commons Policy Council’s inaugural report. DATE/TIME Wed, 9 June 2021 10:00 – 11:00 CET (Paris) 18:00 – 19:00 AEST (Canberra) REGISTER FOR ZOOM LINK https://www.eventbrite.com/e/news-media-research-centre-report-launch-ticke… TITLE The coproduction of open source software by volunteers and big tech firms AUTHORS Mathieu O’Neil, Xiaolan Cai, Laure Muselli, Fred Pailler and Stefano Zacchiroli SUMMARY This report maps how firms are collaborating with communities of unpaid volunteers to produce open source code, used in most IT applications and infrastructures. We map firm employee contributions to top GitHub repositories, and analyse how the IT press portrays this coproduction. We also show how IT firm and foundation employee presentations at open source conferences reveal contrasting visions of digital infrastructure, business models, and the firm-community relationship. Big tech firms such as Amazon are using cloud computing and Software as a Service to transform open source software, which is intended to be shared and modified, into closed assets. The report outlines strategic responses to big tech appropriation and reviews current debates about the recognition of volunteer work, money in FOSS, software licenses and universal basic incomes. The report also features invited comments exploring alternative perspectives by French open source specialists from the fields of academia, industry and activism. SCHEDULE 18:00-18:05 (10:00-10:05 CET Paris) Introduction and launch Prof. Kerry McCallum, Director N&MRC, University of Canberra 18:05-18:15 Firm-volunteer coproduction on GitHub and in the IT media Dr Mathieu O’Neil, University of Canberra 18:15-18:25 Firm discourses about open source, ongoing research Dr Laure Muselli, Telecom Paris Dr Stefano Zacchiroli, Université de Paris / Inria 18:25-18:30 Some strategic responses to big tech appropriation Dr Mathieu O’Neil, University of Canberra 18:30-19:00 Debate, Q&A The coproduction of open source software by volunteers and big tech firms report was made possible by the support of the Alfred P. Response to ephemera
by Mathieu O'Neil 10 Apr '21

10 Apr '21

Hi all The ephemera journal has asked jopp to respond to a questionnaire for their upcoming issue. The responses below have already been approved by the jopp ed team. If anyone has any comments or objections to them please advise by next Tuesday 13 April. Thanks! Mathieu =-=-= I would like to invite you to write 1 page on the Journal of Peer Production along the following topics: -What is your initiative about? First, exploring the relationship between peer production and social change. We understand peer production as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of free and open source software, of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia, and of open hardware projects. We have published special issues on value and currency, shared machine shops, law, work, feminism, urban planning, and policy, amongst others. These included contributions from researchers, activists and artists. Second, developing alternatives to academic publishing. Our approach to peer reviewing is informed by Whitworth and Friedman’s criticism of academic publishing as a form of competitive economics in which 'scarcity reflects demand, so high journal rejection rates become quality indicators.' This self-reinforcing system where journals that reject more attract more results in a situation where 'avoiding faults becomes more important than new ideas. Wrongly accepting a paper with a fault gives reputation consequences, while wrongly rejecting a useful paper leaves no evidence.' -How does it challenge mainstream publishing/academia? All the articles are in the public domain. For peer reviewed articles, we publish the reviews - which can remain anonymous or not - as well as the original submission of the article. We have established a system of 'signals' indicating the article’s quality so that we can publish imperfect articles more quickly whilst also protecting the journal’s reputation. The journal also circumvents prohibitions on sharing copyrighted or embargoed content, such as pre-prints of chapters from the Handbook of Peer Production (2021). -How are you organised? We have an editorial team and a wider scientific board. All governance decisions are debated on our publicly accessible and archived mailing list. http://peerproduction.net/about/participate/ -What challenges you face? Lack of resources, burn-out, infrastructure. -How to transform publishing/academia/society? There are of course many ways to achieve social change… >From a scientific journal perspective, at the local workplace level, the value of autonomous editorial work should be better recognised by research institutions; open access and open data should become the norm; dependence on the costly “bundles” of publishing conglomerates which gather access to researcher-produced scientific journals as well as services such as impact metrics (allowing institutions to climb up the rankings) should be challenged at every opportunity. Societally, the work of the P2PFoundation, P2PLab, Commons Transition show the way. We need more organisations and initiatives that can operate as a conduit between peer production and traditional institutions. In the context of widespread automation leading to increasing rates of unemployment, we must develop the means to gain more space and recognition for volunteer work and the commons sector from states and firms. =-=-=

We have accordingly decided to use the knowledge and imaginaries we encountered whilst studying peer production to list the benefits commons-based and commons-oriented peer production could contribute to humanity and the biosphere. Though we hope others will find these useful, this is not our main concern: the primary audience for this final chapter, as implied by its title (“Be Your Own Peer!”), is ourselves. It is meant as a resource that we can, with as much success as events will afford us, put into practice.' We would like to use the jopp public list to critique and further develop the policy proposals and other suggestions presented in chapter 30 of the HoPP ["Be Your Own Peer! Principles and Policies for the Commons" (Mathieu O’Neil, Sophie Toupin & Christian Pentzold)] So, starting next week, we are proposing to post a succession of extracts of this chapter to the list, asking if anyone has any ideas on how to improve / implement our proposals. The two tables from ch. 30 which summarise our proposed principles and policies can be found as PDFs on the abovementioned jopp page. If there is fruitful feedback and debate on the list, we will publish the reworked proposals in jopp#15 TRANSITION, listing all contributors. Is everyone OK with this plan? Any thoughts or hacks most welcome. :-) cheers, Mathieu and Panos eds jopp#15 TRANSITION

Hi all We will be sending out reviews to authors next week. In the meantime, please find below a summary of the Handbook content now available via the jopp. Other updates will follow. http://peerproduction.net/projects/books/the-handbook-of-peer-production/ 1-HoPP: Extracts The political economy of academic publishing (Chapter 29) Table 30.1 Be Your Own Peer: Principles (Chapter 30) Table 30.2 Be Your Own Peer: Policies for the common good (Chapter 30) 2-HoPP: Preprints Prophets and Advocates of Peer Production (Chapter 7) What’s Next? Peer Production Studies? (Chapter 29) 3-HoPP: Table of Contents Chapter 29 finishes with these words: 'We asked at the outset: “Should there be a field of peer production studies?” The answer is: why not, but also: who cares? Ultimately when it comes to one’s personal interest in peer production, considering it analytically, as an object of study, is perhaps less important than getting involved as a participant. We have accordingly decided to use the knowledge and imaginaries we encountered whilst studying peer production to list the benefits commons-based and commons-oriented peer production could contribute to humanity and the biosphere. To this end, the next and final chapter of the Handbook of Peer Production outlines guiding strategic principles and concrete policy proposals for progressive social change. Hi Zack I'm afraid an autographed physical copy will not be forthcoming. ;-) I have an alternative proposal: authors are uploading their chapter preprints to their institutional repositories / websites. We will collate these URLs using the Handbook's Twitter account <@beyourownpeer>. Would you be interested in doing that for chapter 28, which has interviews with yourself and other "peer practitioners"? Thanks for letting me know! cheers Mathieu PS. At some point in the future I will create a "Handbook of Peer Production" page on the jopp website (under Projects -> Books) and upload some content there. ________________________________ From: Stefano Zacchiroli <zack(a)upsilon.cc> Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2021 0:54 To: Mathieu O'Neil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] Publication of The Handbook of Peer Production Nice, congrats! Publication of The Handbook of Peer Production [apologies for multiple exposures] We are delighted to announce the publication of The Handbook of Peer Production, part of Wiley’s Handbooks in Communication and Media series. This Handbook represents a milestone in the study of what has been described by Yochai Benkler as “the most significant organisational innovation that has emerged from Internet-mediated social practice.” **** Editors Mathieu O'Neil, Associate Professor of Communication, News & Media Research Centre, University of Canberra and Honorary Associate Professor of Sociology, Australian National University, Australia Christian Pentzold, Professor of Media and Communication, Department for Communication and Media Studies, Leipzig University, Germany Sophie Toupin, Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) postdoctoral fellow, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands **** Summary Peer production is a mode of commons-based and – ideally – commons-oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. This decentralised organisational model, which does not rely on exclusive ownership and formal contracts, has in some cases surpassed traditional forms of production. Originally the Internet enabled millions of people to collectively produce and revise computer operating systems and applications, encyclopedia articles, and film and television databases. Today peer production is still associated to the digital commons in the case of wireless networks and online currencies, but also encompasses offline ventures such as shared machine shops and biohacking, amongst many others. The Handbook of Peer Production outlines central concepts, examines current and emerging areas of application, and analyses the forms and principles of cooperation that continue to impact multiple areas of production and sociality. Featuring thirty chapters by an international and diverse team of experts in the field, this landmark work maps the origins and manifestations of peer production, discusses the factors and conditions that are enabling and co-opting it, and considers peer production projects’ current impacts and potential consequences for the social order. Detailed chapters address the governance, political economy, and cultures of peer production, as well as user motivations, social rules and norms, the role of peer production in social change and activism, and much more. Filling a gap in available literature as the only extensive overview of peer production’s modes of generating informational goods and services, this ground-breaking volume: • Offers accessible, up-to-date information to both specialists and non-specialists across academia, industry, journalism, and public advocacy; • Includes interviews with leading practitioners discussing the future of peer production; • Critically assesses the histories, key debates, contradictions, and pioneers of peer production; • Explores technologies for peer production, openness and licensing, peer learning, open design, and free and open-source software. The Handbook of Peer Production is an indispensable resource for students, instructors, researchers, and professionals working in fields such as communication studies, science and technology studies, sociology, and management studies, as well as those interested in the network information economy, the public domain, and new forms of organisation and networking.
