jopp update 2024
by Mathieu O'Neil 29 Jan '24

29 Jan '24

Hi all The "peerproduction.net" domain name, held by P2PF, was allowed to lapse at the end of 2023 [citing a P2PF web person: "I did send an email to a few folks regarding old domains and unfortunately it did not reach Mathieu:( As part of the foundation moving administratively to Belgium, a lot of old domain names have been released as no one claimed them"]. As a result the "peerproduction.net" domain name went into a "redemption period" and the journal website went down; thanks to Adrian Smith for alerting us about it. Eventually we managed to track down the relevant P2PF person and Peter Troxler (who already hosts the journal website on his server) purchased the domain name - thanks Peter! Thanks also to Stephen Collins for his help. In the process, two issues came to the fore: 1-we need to find supplementary archiving solutions: I will start another thread about this soon. 2-we need to update the jopp website to make it clear the journal is no longer active (this will prevent unwanted submissions which still episodically occur). My suggestion is to insert the following text: "[update (February 2024): the journal of peer production is no longer active; jopp#15 in 2022 was the final issue]" In the following pages ABOUT “Submissions”, “Mission Statement”, "People", "Advice", "Twitter" PEER REVIEW "Process" ["Current" is obsolete and should be deleted] @all: if you have any other suggestions please let me know before the end of this week. Thanks! For the front/homepage text, which currently reads: “Welcome to the Journal of Peer Production The Journal of Peer Production seeks high-quality contributions from researchers and practitioners of peer production. We understand peer production as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia.” We could have instead: "The Journal of Peer Production is no longer active Between 2011 and 2022 researchers and practitioners self-managed the Journal of Peer Production to explore and document peer production, understood as a mode of commons-based and oriented production in which participation is voluntary and predicated on the self-selection of tasks. Notable examples are the collaborative development of Free Software projects and of the Wikipedia online encyclopedia. jopp#15 TRANSITION was the final issue" @all: if you have any other suggestions please let me know before the end of this week. Thanks! cheers Mathieu

Excerpts of the film Nelkengasse in: “Fashion City“ in the Museum of London Docklands
by kanonmedia 09 Oct '23

09 Oct '23

Dear all, please let me inform you of the screening of excerpts of Nelkengasse, my documentary film on the flight of Heinz Moldau and his family from Vienna in 1938, https://www.kanonmedia.com/nelkengasse/ by the Museum of London, in the framework of the upcoming exhibition Fashion City. How Jewish Londoners shaped global style [October 13, 2023 – April 14, 2024]: https://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/museum-london-docklands/whats-on/exhibiti…: "For the first time, this exhibition will uncover the major contribution of Jewish designers in making London an iconic fashion city. Discover the stories behind the Jewish fashion makers who became leaders in their industries, founded retail chains still on the high street today, and dressed the rich and famous […]“. If you are in the area, happy if you come and visit! I will be in London from October 10-16, do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in further information – :-) – for contact details please see below. — The film Nelkengasse is the portrait of Heinz Moldau who lived with his Jewish family in Vienna. His father ran a reputated leather goods factory in the 7th district of Vienna. In the interviews Heinz Moldau talks about his childhood and youth in Vienna, about the factory – which was aryanized; he reports how the family got threatened by the National Socialists, and how the family fled and built a new life in Great Britain. After his work life he retreated on an island north of the Scottish mainland where he lived for more than 20 years. In Vienna 1938-1945, the buildings No 4 and 6, Nelkengasse represent a particularly tragic location in the 6th district. In these houses, many so-called Sammelwohnungen were installed – group flats where Jewish families lived following evictions from their homes. From here, 31 people were deported to concentration camps and murdered there. This film tells the story of the Moldau family and features interviews with Heinz Moldau, only 16 when he fled Vienna. Reminder: Mastodon event deadline 14th April
by nathaniel tkacz 11 Apr '23

11 Apr '23

Hello Jopp list, The call for presentations for our Mastodon research event is closing on the 14th of April. We hope to see you in person or online! Here are the details once again: Call for Presentations Mastodon: Research Symposium and Tool Exploration Workshop Date: 22nd and 23rd of June, 2023 Place: University of Warwick, UK + online (hybrid event, GMT time) Submission deadline: 14th of April, 2023 (Register hereLink opens in a new window <https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/cdi/news-events/mastodon_research/>) Although established in 2016, Mastodon grew rapidly in the second half of 2022. From an estimated 500,000 monthly active users (MAUs) it reached an apparent peak of 2.5 million MAUs in December 2022 before settling back to a reported 1.4 million as of late January 2023. The rise of Mastodon cannot be separated from the tragi-spectacle of Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, and this raises new questions about the relationship between social media platforms and their alternatives. How should we understand the significance of Mastodon, both as an alternative to Twitter and in its own right? We know Mastodon has long appealed to users invested in the infrastructural politics of open-source and federated architectures. But less is known about Mastodon’s forms of sociality and how its infrastructural characteristics shape this sociality. Can Mastodon sociality scale without the viral dynamics of algorithmic feeds? Should we even evaluate Mastodon based on its potential for growth on the scale of the commercial platforms? Are its new users simply on a Twitter sabbatical? How has the influx of users altered the dynamics of Mastodon? Mastodon users are spared from the advertising-derived attention economy, but ads are relatively low down on the scale of undesirable interactions on social media. How is Mastodon handling racism, trolling, and content moderation? Is there a specificity to the violence and abuse experienced on Mastodon as compared to its commercial counterparts? Mastodon introduces a novel level of social media governance, the instance, whose structures of authority can take various forms, from mini-chiefdoms to more deliberative collectives. What do we know about how different Mastodon instances handle governance and the exercise of their ‘instance-power’? Conversely, which tactics have malicious users developed to circumvent moderation or blocking? If platform politics emerges through the unique affordance of a platform, what might we expect from the federated architecture of Mastodon? Finally, Mastodon’s architecture presents new challenges and opportunities for digital research. What kinds of research do the existing tools (such as the R package “rtoot”) enable and what other tools and software might we want to develop? Could Mastodon be used to explore more conscientious ways of doing API-style research, and platform-community research in general? This event seeks to take the pulse of current Mastodon research. It will involve a one-day symposium featuring research presentations and a plenary address by alternative social media researcher, *Robert Gehl*. This will be followed by a one-day tool exploration workshop exploring the RToot package and other research tools. The symposium will be a hybrid event based at the University of Warwick. The tool exploration will be in-person only. If you would like to participate in this event, please submit an application via the following website by the 14th of April: https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/cdi/news-events/mastodon_research/. You will be asked for the following: - a 300-word presentation abstract - either a URL link to your research profile or a 150-word biography - an indication of attendance mode (in-person or online) - an indication of whether you wish to participate in the tool workshop (in-person only) Possible topics might include: - Mastodon governance - Mastodon feature analysis or interface criticism - Cultural studies of Mastodon - Black Mastodon - Mastodon sociality and/or community dynamics - Platform migration - Mastodon and Twitter relations - Mastodon apps - Instance politics - Cross instance research - Methods and tools for studying Mastodon - Novel use cases of Mastodon instances If you have any questions, please get in touch with n[dot]tkacz[at]warwick[dot]ac[dot]uk.

DCPC report released
by Mathieu O'Neil 04 Dec '22

04 Dec '22

Hi all, The Digital Commons Policy Council is delighted to announce the release of its “Report on the production of digital commons and on the conditions of the organisation and action of the Digital Commons Policy Council”. An electronic version of the report is available for free download from the APO open access evidence platform: https://apo.org.au/node/320864 A print version will be available on request. For the DCPC, Mathieu =-=-= REPORT ON THE PRODUCTION OF DIGITAL COMMONS AND ON THE CONDITIONS OF THE ORGANISATION AND ACTION OF THE DIGITAL COMMONS POLICY COUNCIL Digital commons are resources produced and maintained by communities and projects made of diverse actors. They are governed by rules which guarantee their collective and shared nature. Examples include Linux (computer software), Firefox (web browser), Wikipedia (online encyclopedia), and OpenStreetMap (geographic database). In contrast to political exclusion and privatised digital technologies with restricted or no access, the collaborative co-creation of digital commons illustrates how people from all over the world can work together to create useful resources which anyone can use. The Digital Commons Policy Council was created to build connections between the worlds of policy-making and of community-based digital innovation. Our aims are to increase the recognition of the volunteer labour that produces common digital resources and to examine the opportunities and limitations of digital commons as templates for futures of work. Some of the questions we aim to address are: How could volunteer coproduction be better recognised in future economic policies? What could be done to incentivise the ongoing development and maintenance of our digital commons? Is the monetisation of online labour through new digital currencies and tokenisation a help or hindrance to the production of digital commons? And finally, are peer-to-peer or decentralised organising models living up to their emancipatory aims? Part I of this report documents our activities in 2021-2022 and outlines some future plans. Part II includes a selection of relevant documents published before the Digital Commons Policy Council’s foundation in June 2021, as well as since that date. CONTENTS I. 7/7 live event Thursday 7 April + repurposing of jopp-ed
by Mathieu O'Neil 06 Apr '22

06 Apr '22

Dear members of jopp-ed: 1] 7/7 online-live event on Thursday As you know JoPP#15 TRANSITION is the final issue of the JoPP. However there is scope for members of the jopp community to add reflections about the past or ideas about future projects until the end of 2022. An updated version of issue #15 will be released in early 2023. There will be an event at this time also. In the more immediate future Panos is organising a 7/7 online-live event on Thursday 7 April at 7PM CET. I am not 100% sure whether I will attend at this stage as this is 5AM for me but I certainly will try! :-) @Panos: might be a good idea to post a reminder about this to jopp-public? 2] Repurposing of jopp-ed As proposed and approved last year on jopp-public, now that the final issue has been released, I am going to repurpose the jopp-ed mailing list for the "think tank" project I am doing with Kit and others. This means I will be changing the membership of the jopp-ed list. Any jopp-related business can be conducted on jopp-public and if it is sensitive in any way e.g. Panos' plan to create PDFs for all issues or questions around website archiving / infrastructure we can just request contributions on jopp-public (if necessary) and then communicate directly via email. I will update the jopp-ed subscribers list on Monday 4 April midday CET. Thanks to all the members for their contributions. I'll take this opportunity to express my appreciation and thanks to Panos for organising the 7/7 event and more broadly to acknowledge how he shaped this final issue in so many ways: from his proposal to have "complements", to the reflections about reasons for the journal's end in our editorial notes, or leaving the issue open for contributions, etc. It's meant a lot to me to finish the jopp in such a positive way with someone who has a deep commitment to the peer production community and a great understanding of peer production projects. :-) cheers, Mathieu cc. jopp-public

Journal of Peer Production #15 TRANSITION
by Mathieu O'Neil 28 Feb '22

28 Feb '22

PRESS RELEASE: Journal of Peer Production #15 TRANSITION THE FINAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF PEER PRODUCTION #15 TRANSITION http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-15-transition Issue editors: Panayotis Antoniadis & Mathieu O’Neil JoPP #15 TRANSITION features six peer-reviewed articles exploring diverse aspects of transitions in peer production projects. Each article is accompanied by an additional piece or ‘complement’ which addresses the same topic in a non-academic manner. This experimental format aimed to explore the transitions, permutations and transformations of research on peer production. Reflections about change also inform the future of the Journal of Peer Production itself. It was collectively decided that the correct transition path for the Journal is to close its circle: this will be the last issue of the JoPP. This final issue will serve as a vehicle to strengthen the JoPP community and encourage its members to collectively learn from the past, and support each other in our future endeavors. To that end, the issue comprises two dedicated sections: ‘Reflections on the past’ and ‘The future’ which will remain open for contributions by members of the JoPP community until the end of 2022, the final year of the Journal of Peer Production. In early 2023, a closing ceremony will mark the end of this era. More detail on the content of the issue – in its current incarnation – and the plans for its expansion can be found in our Editorial Notes. We look forward to your feedback and contributions. As a final experiment in publishing processes, we invite the authors of this ultimate issue to present themselves in an online gathering in the context of the 7at7 series, on May 7, at 7pm CET, at https://7at7.digital/<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/OY1ECjZrEQsGl3MDSRP_tG?domain=7at7.digital>. After a quick round of introductions to their work, we will have the opportunity to discuss all together the past and future of peer production.
