by Mathieu O'Neil 28 Jun '18

28 Jun '18

Hi all Briefly, some news about our release schedule: JoPP#12 Maskerspaces and Institutions Kat and Adrian have been working hard on delivering this bumper issue (13 peer reviewed articles...!). Issue due to release June 2018, will go live in the next few days. JoPP#13 OPEN Deadline for peer reviewed papers is 30 June. Steve and I will be contacting reviewers in July. Reviews are due end August. This issue is scheduled to release early 2019. JoPP#14 ??? This issue could be released either second half of next year i.e September/October 2019 or (if we go annual as was evoked) first half 2020. In any case someone needs to come up with a plan and a team... Maurizio expressed interest at one point... Is this still the case? Or anyone else? Please post here or contact an editorial team member offlist if you have an idea. cheers Mathieu

Re: [JoPP-Public] need help with @peer_production twitter account
by Kat Braybrooke 30 Mar '18

Hi again all, Just a quick update that the Journal of Peer Production Twitter account is up to 100 followers after only a few weeks in action, and has started to gather some quite nice bits of public discussion and interest around the articles of Special Issue 11 City: https://twitter.com/peer_production I would *really* value someone else stepping up at this stage to help carry the load by tweeting from the account with me every now and then (a few times a week would be more than helpful!), as the discussions will only continue if we keep fostering them together - and in any case it's always better to feature a diversity of voices. The more the merrier, really. Let me or Mathieu know? Thanks in advance for your help... - K On Wed, Mar 14, 2018 at 1:14 PM, Mathieu O'Neil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au> wrote: > Hi all > > > Great news - the @peer_production account is now live on Twitter. ISSUE #11: CITY of the Journal of Peer Production is out!
by Nicholas Anastasopoulos 13 Mar '18

13 Mar '18

The new special issue of the Journal of Peer Production on CITY is published! It showcases a wide variety of case studies in cities from different geographies of the Global North and Global South namely *Barcelona, Berlin, Brisbane, Brussels, Ciudad Juárez, Dhaka, Genoa, London, Melbourne, Milan, New York, Paris, Rosario. * Some of those case studies focus more on peer production technologies and others more on the social and political processes on the ground, all with different research methodologies and approaches. They invite us to reflect on various forms of peer production of knowledge and representation of the city as a commons, where technology should be considered as both a tool (infrastructure) and a contested space. They look at challenges of governance focusing on citizen-driven models of peer production in the city where local governments are called to be in dialogue and build synergies with different stakeholder communities. They use participatory and collaborative methods to collect their data following co-creative research approaches. They are transdisciplinary as much as interdisciplinary in both the methodological and theoretical approaches taken by contributors who merge together urban studies, architecture, informatics, political and social sciences, and ethnography to name a few. The authors collaborated directly - as activists or through their research with other activists, communities and/or stakeholders- giving voice to all those involved in the making and sharing of those projects. In numbers, there are *eight case study research papers* which have been peer-reviewed and revised through the particularly transparent review process of JoPP (i.e. for each of the peer-reviewed papers the originally submitted version, the reviews and the final feedback of reviewers on the revised version are made public) and *four experimental contributions* that have been reviewed by the special issue editors. The experimental pieces follow a less rigorous and more playful format, an interview with commentary, a dialogue, a call for participation, and an open-ended online article. They all invite us, the readers, to follow up their stories in dedicated online venues, or even in face-to-face meetings, and participate in the form of peer production that they advocate for. Along similar endeavours opening up to possibility and hope in the midst of uncertainty, these twelve stories of peer production, most of them positive and encouraging, document and analyse different forms of citizen engagement and participation. They are good examples of situated action that can provide inspiration and eventually help to build tools, toolkits, best practices, patterns, and methodologies. As editors, we learned a great deal while putting together these contributions, all different in style, context, and methodology. We hope that they will prove inspiring and empowering for all readers as well to engage as citizens-activists, co-creators, insurgent architects, who appropriate and contextualise urban technologies and materialities to serve local collective needs. The editors, Nicholas, Penny, Panayotis

Journal of Peer Production Twitter handle?
by Kat Braybrooke 09 Mar '18

09 Mar '18

Hello all, Just wondering if you've discussed already (or made plans for) setting up a Twitter handle for the Journal of Peer Production? I'm bringing it up now because a lot of people ask me for one when I discuss the special issues with them - and I bet it's the same for each of you. I also regularly see people tweeting about the journal, but without a handle to link others on Twitter to it. Given tweets can be quite a useful mechanism for sharing readings widely with many folk at once when new issues come out, I'd be happy to maintain an account with a few others here if anyone else is interested. Just putting it out there as an offer, and apologies if it's already been talked about before I was conscious on this list ;) - Kat

08 Mar '18

Hi all A quick word to update everyone on forthcoming JoPP releases: JoPP ##11 CITY to be released this week dated JAN 2018. The issue looks really, really good. :-) JoPP # 12 SHOPS 2 (I made that up - sorry eds) to be released May-June dated SEPT 2018. JoPP #13 OPEN we (Steve Collins and I) accepted 7 peer review papers - if anyone has any ideas for special sections (debates, interviews, invited comments etc) please get in touch with us. The issue is meant to be released in JAN 2019. We might be switching to annual releases in which case JoPP #14 would be released in JAN 2020. Maurizio indicated he might put a bid in, not sure what status that plan is at. If anyone has ideas for an issue, preferably around ideas in OPEN CFP, please post a message to public, or contact ed list, or one of the ed team directly. cheers Mathieu

CfP: EASST 2018 - Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw
by Johan Söderberg 26 Jan '18

26 Jan '18

CfP: Outlaw innovation and the invention of the outlaw EASST 2018, 25-28th July 2018, Lancaster University, UK Convenors: Johan Söderberg (Göteborg University) Maxigas (Lancaster University) Deadline for submissions: February 14th 2018. Submit abstracts and contact the conveners at: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6286 We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our panel at EASST 2018 The panel investigates innovation processes driven by antagonistic relations between actors on both sides of the law. We invite case studies of how mutual hostilities between actors are pursued through technological change, whereby each actor seeks to gain an edge against their adversary. Three empirical fields that exemplify this dynamic are the surge of legal highs, information security and crypto-currencies. More examples of the same thing can be found in other fields of empirical investigation and suit this panel. What we will examine under the label of "outlaw innovation" is how conflict breeds innovation. Related to this is an awareness of the tenuous relation between legislation and innovation. The "outlaw" is just another word for an innovator. Concurrently, however, capitalism strives relentlessly to subsume and integrate its own outside, turning this unknown into innovation and new markets. From this observation follows that the purported outsider position ascribed to various grassroots innovators, users, etc., must be scrutinized. States, capital and academic actors work in conjunction with these outlawed/independent researchers to produce a shared language of common concerns around risks and opportunities inherent in technological innovation, such as in the Tor project. The legal grey zone thus emerges as an incubator of innovation for legal businesses. We encourage paper submissions utilizing diverse theoretical approaches and a wide range of case studies to explore the concept of the "outlaw innovator".

CFP: EASST 2018 Panel "Situating designs", Discussant: Alex Wilkie
by Yana Boeva 19 Jan '18

19 Jan '18

**** apologies for cross-posting / please circulate this announcement widely **** Dear all, We welcome paper proposals for a panel on the situatedness of design practices and artefacts at EASST 2018 “Meetings - Making Science, Technology and Society Together” <https://easst2018.easst.net/home/>, 25-28th July 2018 in Lancaster University, UK. (B07) Situating designs Discussant: Alex Wilkie (Goldsmiths, University of London) Convenors: Peter Fuzesi (Lancaster University) p.fuzesi(a)lancaster.ac.uk <mailto:[email protected]>; Yana Boeva (York University, Toronto) yaboeva(a)yorku.ca <mailto:[email protected]>; Design, at the heart of creating new technologies, has a predominant existence and influence outside the theoretical framework of research as a professional practice. A plethora of practices identify as design. These range from traditional product design over design engineering to more recent conversions in UX/UI or design thinking. Simultaneously, the boundaries of design have become porous; research in the social sciences discloses that design is also practiced by those avoiding the term. Newer approaches at the intersections of design and STS, such as craft (Rosner & Fox, 2016; Pérez Bustos, 2017), critical technical practice (Agre, 1997; Boehner et al., 2005), hacking (Söderberg and Delfanti, 2015), repair and fixing (Denis and Pontille, 2014; Jackson, 2014), offer unconventional reconfigurations of both technological expertise and socio-political worlds. This diversity of locations and approaches makes it difficult to provide a definition what design means—something even design research has been struggling with. Rather than seeking a substantive definition, this panel makes an inquiry into the location, circulation, presences and absences of design practices. Part of this challenge to situate design, is articulating the geographical, organisational, discursive and material arrangements that converge at sites, where design is practiced and reflexively delineated. We welcome both theoretical contributions and practical case studies that follow along dialogues on what design means for design, STS, and beyond. To submit a paper please go to the panel website: https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6280 <https://nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2018/conferencesuite.php/panels/6280> Submissions should include: a paper title, a short abstract of max. 300 characters, and a long abstract of max. 250 words. The call for papers closes at midnight CET on February 14, 2018 (23:59 CEU). Best wishes, Peter & Yana Yana Boeva PhD Candidate Science and Technology Studies York University, Toronto Asst.
