Cannot move point in visual mode

In a C++ source file:

1. Place the point at the end of a function.
2. 'V' to enter visual line mode.
3. Press 'C-M-a' (c-beginning-of-defun &optional ARG) to move to the
beginning of the function and the point doesn't move.
