Inclusion in Scopus or ThomsonReuters Web of Science
by Mathieu ONeil 30 Oct '16

30 Oct '16

Hi all It's been suggested to me that it would be useful to get JoPP some more institutional recognition. Does anyone have a clue about whether it would be desirable and / or advisable to get JoPP listed into Scopus or ThomsonReuters Web of Science? Scopus is run by Elsevier which is obvs not great and after a brief look on their site I could not find info on how to be indexed. On the other hand Thomson does indicate what their criteria for inclusion is: http://wokinfo.com/essays/journal-selection-process However they seem to have requirements which may be hard to meet - such as a DOI for each article...? is this a way to exclude non-corporate publications? Would pursuing this be a good idea? Do we need to revisit the idea of raising money for JoPP? Thoughts? cheers Mathieu

Personally I don't use neither of those resources anymore to look for bibliography, but I remember lots of people were using the web of science when i was doing my phd in delft. > However they seem to have requirements which may be hard to meet - such as > a DOI for each article...? is this a way to exclude non-corporate > publications? Question
by Vasilis Kostakis 26 Oct '16

26 Oct '16

Dear editorial team, Below you may find the abstract of an intrinsic case study of the recent "think global, print local" initiative, which arguably may fit the scope and aim of JoPP. Hence, I am wondering whether you think that this could be submitted as a "communication in brief" paper to JoPP (i.e., as a submission that does not fit into a special issue theme). All the best, Vasilis *Title: *“Think global, print local”: A case study on a commons-based publishing and distribution model Vasilis Kostakis, Tallinn University of Technology Stacco Troncoso, P2P Foundation, Guerrilla Translation Ann Marie Utratel, P2P Foundation, Guerrilla Translation *Abstract: *This article discusses an intrinsic case study which demonstrates the convergence of decentralized online and offline ways of sharing knowledge. We describe a new techno-economic form of value creation and distribution in relation to the knowledge commons and the publishing industry. The dynamics and challenges of an emerging, commons-based copyright license (the Peer Production License) are also outlined. We conclude by arguing that this intrinsic case study could build bridges across languages and cultures, and enable concrete, material commoning practices.

The Digital Public Sphere in Question: From Counter- to Crypto-Publics.
by Johan Söderberg 17 Oct '16

17 Oct '16

The Digital Public Sphere in Question: From Counter- to Crypto-Publics. Fengersfors (Gothenburg area), Sweden, 3-5 mars 2017. Democracy presupposes a public sphere where citizens can debate their differences and reach mutually binding agreements. The emergence of the public sphere has often been linked to the surge of books and newspapers. Today, however, printed media is in crisis. The advertising revenues of publishing houses are siphoned off by Google and Facebook, while the habit of reading printed media is in steady decline. As a consequence, the journalistic profession is withering away too. It is much disputed whether this counts as a threat to free speech and public debate, or, on the contrary, is a promise to set them free. In different words, can digital media shoulder the same civic responsibilities as conventional media is said to have done in the past? Many are alarmed by a rise in uncivility in public debates, often linked to the anonymity of the computer screen. The graphic interface is said to invite trolling. A related concern is that the search engines are programmed to reinforce pre-existing search patterns. Algorithms create "filter bubbles" that undermine the possibility of developing an informed opinion. Others stress the upside. From the lukewarm promises about e-governance in the 1990s to the pie-in-the-sky visions of liquid democracy today, proposals are not lacking for how citizenship could be reinvigorated thanks to digital media. Other examples are of a more confrontational nature, such as the possibility of anonymous leaks and the surge of crypto-publics in the darknet. The ambiguity of the role of new media reflects a deeper ambiguity in the word "people" itself. Since 1789, the p-word has interchangeably stood for, on the one hand, equality and democracy, and, on the other, for passion, violence and irrationality. We invite both theoretical papers, empirical case studies, and hands-on presentations. Proposals for workshops are also welcome. We aim to have a mix of scholars and practitioners. Relevant topics for this session may include but are not limited to: Algorithmic intervention in shaping opinions and political agendas Publics and counter-publics emerging in relation to the digital public sphere The tension between the public and anonymity/cryptography The possibilities and limits of leaking as a political strategy Development of digital tools for use in the public sphere How to develop an informed opinion inside a filter bubble The amateurisation of journalism as a threat and a promise to free speech and public debate The winter session will be held in Fengersfors, Sweden 3-5 mars. The participation fee is 600 kr (60 euro), which includes housing and full pension. For students and unemployed, the fee is 300 kr (30 euro). The airport closest to Fengerfors is "Landvetter", next to Göteborg. We will meet at Göteborg train station on Friday and go together to Fengersfors. If you wish to present at the winter symposium, submit a short abstract (400 words) and a few lines about yourself to the coordinators. The deadline to submit proposals is November 15, 2017. The preliminary program will be announced on December 15, 2017 at <http://www.nordic.university<http://www.nordic.university/>>. There you will also find more information about NSU, and you may sign up for the NSU newsletter. Journal of Peer Production #9 "Alternative Internets"

Hi everyone I posted the following to these lists: Fibreculture ACS CITAMS ICT & Society I am subscribed to AIR on a different email account but seem to have trouble posting there, will advise if this persists. As ever, please feel free to circulate to other fora (Nettime? STS?) though advising here to avoid multiple posts. cheers, Mathieu =-=-= <Apologies for multiple posts> Journal of Peer Production #9 "Alternative Internets" The Journal of Peer Production editorial team is delighted to announce our latest release, JoPP #9, "Alternative Internets" edited by Félix Tréguer, Panayotis Antoniadis and Johan Söderberg. As always, the peer review process - including original submissions, reviews, revised papers, and signals - is accessible. The issue is available for free here: http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-9-alternative-internets/ >From the Introduction: The hopes of past generations of hackers weigh like a delirium on the brains of the newbies. Back in the days when Bulletin Board Systems metamorphosed into the Internet, the world's digital communications networks - hitherto confined to military, corporate and elite academic institutions - were at grasping reach of ordinary individuals. To declare the independence of the Internet from nation states and the corporate world seemed like no more than stating the bare facts. Even encrypted communication - the brainchild of military research - had leaked into the public's hands and had become a tool wielded against state power. Collectives of all stripes could make use of the new possibilities offered by the Web to bypass traditional media, broadcast their own voice and assemble in new ways in this new public sphere. For some time, at least, the Internet as a whole embodied "alternativeness." Varia section for Journal of Peer Production
by Mathieu ONeil 29 Sep '16

29 Sep '16

Hi everyone JOPP has received an unsolicited submission recently and members of the editorial team have been debating what to do about it. Our conclusion was that we should stick with the themed issue format rather than try to put together a "varia" issue as we may not get enough unsolicited submissions to populate such an issue. In addition a "varia" issue might mess with the flow of themed, named issues. So, the alternative is to add a "varia" section to themed issues whenever it is required. Peter Troxler has kindly volunteered to be our first "varia" editor. Thanks Peter! The "CONTACT" page on the website featured a contact form which was broken. I have deleted the form, renamed this page "SUBMISSIONS" and am proposing to insert the text below this message on that page. I have put the JOPP editorial list as contact point for general questions and attempted to modify its exact email address to avoid being spammed. If anyone has a better idea on how to do this please let me know. Regarding unsolicited "varia" submissions (the exact name is still up in the air btw - suggestions welcome) I have used the same contact procedure. I hope that is OK with Peter and everyone else - we can adjust if necessary. So, see text below for comments and approval by the general list. cheers, Mathieu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SUBMISSIONS For themed special issues, please refer to the Call For Papers and submit directly to the special issue editors. For submissions which do not fit into a special issue theme, please submit to the Varia section editor, Peter Troxler, by posting to the (not publicly archived) editorial team mailing list: jopp [dash] editorial [at] lists [dot] ourproject [dot] org If you have a question about the suitability of your contribution to JoPP, please contact the editorial team by posting to the (not publicly archived) editorial team mailing list: jopp [dash] editorial [at] lists [dot] ourproject [dot] org =-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

JoPP issue #9 - preview magazine available online
by panayotis antoniadis 23 Sep '16

23 Sep '16

Dear all, I would like to inform you that the online version of issue #9 should be now the "final" one (we corrected quite a few typos since the first rushed upload), including the pdf version of the "preview" magazine distributed at 4S/EASST, available here: http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-9-alternative-internets/ More specifically, - one pdf for "web" view: http://peerproduction.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/JoPP_preview_final_web… - and one for printing: http://peerproduction.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/JoPP_preview_final_pri… (you can print directly in an A4 printer for a draft copy, but if you want the "original" magazine you should print in A3 with "saddle stitch", like here: https://imprentaonline.cevagraf.coop/en/saddle-stitch-stapled-magazine-cata…, noting that there is a 3mm of abundance, extra margin for the cut) It was great to work with Felix and Johan on this issue, and Luisa and maxigas for the preview, and now looking forward to working again for JoPP on the issue #11, CITY :-) Best, Panos. http://nethood.org/panayotis/

JoPP at 4S/EASST
by Johan Söderberg 14 Sep '16

14 Sep '16

Journal of Peer Production at 4S/EASST, Barcelona, 31/08-03/09 2016 - a status report 4S/EASST is a conference held jointly by the American and the European Science and Technology Studies (STS) associations every fourth year. It is the key event within the STS community and draws two-to-three thousand attendants. 4S/EASST was held at a conference center in Barcelona. Journal of Peer Production pursued a very ambitious and high-profiled program at the conference, where several initiatives converged at one time and place. The special issue of JoPP #9, subtheme: Alternative Internets, and edited by Felix Treuger, Panayotis Antoniadis, and Johan Söderberg, was rescheduled to be released on the date of the conference. When this time plan was decided on, only three week remained to the conference. And although the review process of the seven articles and the one experimental piece had already been finished, much work remained with the finish. Especially JoPP volunteer copyeditor Bryan Hugill made a heroic spurt these last weeks to get all the papers copyedited, and the authors too were very alert, to respond on such short notice. In conjunction with this, a hardcopy preview of the special issue was being produced for free distribution at the venue. Again, we came up with this idea just a few weeks before the conference was about to start, forcing a frenetic work speed on the editors and, not the least, from Luisa Lapacciana, the graphic designer. The money for paying for the prints and for the designer's work came from the netCommons Project, part of EU Horizon 2020, where Panayotis is a participant researcher. The content of the preview was made up of the special issue editorial + a 2-page summary of each of the articles + snapshots from some of the reviewers + a description of the special review process practiced by JoPP, making up 24 pages, printed in monochrome orange and black, in total 150 copies. At the conference, a panel connected to JoPP was held, titled "Digital fabrications amongst hackers, makers and manufacturers: whose 'industrial revolution'?". The conveners were Maxigas, Adrian Smith and Johan Söderberg. The panel consisted of two sessions with five papers in each and the audience numbered an estimated 40-50 listeners (the room was full). In addition to this panel, several more sessions were held at the conference about hackers and makers, where JoPP associates and authors participated, as presenters or discussants. JoPP's local associate in Barcelona, Maxigas, had arranged with a JoPP-stand in the hallway of the conference, next to book publishers and trade associations, on the last day of the conference (Saturday). At different times of the day, it was staffed also by other JoPP-associates (Maurizio Teli and Francesca Musiani). An even more ambitious scheme was to have a book-scanner at the table, but this had to be abandoned due to logistics. On Saturday evening, a demo-night was held at an artist-maker space near the conference centre, the Hangar. Many participants from the conference came, and among the hacker and artist projects presented there, JoPP had a table. This was the night of the official launch and to celebrate this milestone, the visitors were given the opportunity of chatting with authors of the special issue (it was another great idea hatched at the very last moment, and so only one of the authors, Sophie Toupin, was present over IRC, while one other author, Paolo Magaudda, were present in person). Before the conference, it had been communicated to the presenters at the "Digital fabrications"-panel that the presentations could, pending on interest, be made into a special issue of JoPP. At lunch time on Friday, a meeting was held to discuss this idea. More than 10 people attended, showing a strong interest in moving forward with this idea. A team consisting of Adrian Smith, Evelyne Losthe and Kat Braybrooke agreed to write a proposal for a new special issue to be submitted to the JoPP editorial board. However, as the theme of the panel was rather close to the theme of a recent special issue edited by Maxigas and Peter Troxler two years ago, the subsequent discussions centered on finding a different angle for the new special issue. The printed preview JoPP was distributed at all of these events, at the JoPP-table, and during the demo night, plus that copies were strategically placed on coffee-tables and water-tanks during breaks. In spite of this, I did not see a single JoPP-flyer in the paper bin, and many came to me asking to have a copy (no doubt much thanks to the high quality-look of the publication). An estimated 140+ copies were distributed at the conference. Thanks to these many activities, the journal was by far the most visible entity at the conference. Johan Söderberg
