Change to peer review process page
by Mathieu ONeil 29 Nov '16

29 Nov '16

Hi all I was looking at CITY CFP and that led me to our peer review page http://peerproduction.net/peer-review/process/ It states that: "Our process is also informed by Toni Prug's (2010) paper on community reviewing: submission proposals can be made on our open email list. Prospective authors will then be told by our peer review community whether their proposal is appropriate for the journal and if any additional key elements are missing." This clashes with the submission page which was recently updated. "Themed issues For themed special issues, please refer to the Call For Papers and submit directly to the special issue editors. Unsolicited submissions For submissions which do not fit into a special issue theme, please submit to the Varia editor, Peter Troxler, by posting to the (not publicly archived) editorial team mailing list: jopp [dash] editorial [at] lists [dot] ourproject [dot] org" See http://peerproduction.net/about/submissions/ So I am proposing to remove the above peer review page para. cheers Mathieu

CFP JoPP #11 CITY
by Mathieu ONeil 17 Nov '16

17 Nov '16

Hi all I will post the below to CITAMS, ACS, IC&S, Fibreculture. Can others please post to AIR, STS, Nettime, etc and let us know here. cheers Mathieu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= <Apologies for multiple posts> Call for Papers - Journal of Peer Production #11 CITY Editors: Penny Travlou, Nicholas Anastasopoulos, Panayotis Antoniadis ABSTRACTS DUE 31 JANUARY 2017 One of the welfare state’s key jurisdictions was to tend to housing and public space in benevolent ways. However, under the neoliberal dogma, commodification and gentrification threaten both the right to housing and the right to the city. In recent years, cities have become increasingly militarized and surveyed, resembling battlegrounds where freedom and democracy are under attack. At the same time, recent economic, political, and social crises have activated many counter-forces of resistance and creative alternatives for the grassroots production of food, health services, housing, networking infrastructures, and more. The role of technology has been contradictory as well. On the one hand, the Internet has enabled some of the most remarkable peer production success stories at a global scale, such as Wikipedia and Free and Open Source Software, among many others. On the other hand, it has empowered huge corporations like Facebook and Google to fully observe and manipulate our everyday activities, and oppressive governments to censor and surveil their citizens. At the city scale, technology offers opportunities for self-organization, like wireless community networks and numerous bottom-up techno-social initiatives, but also animates the top-down narrative of the “smart city” and the commodification of the “sharing economy" as a service provided by globally active platforms such as Airbnb and Uber. In this situation, peer production in space emerges as a vital bottom-up practice reclaiming citizen participation, and inventing new forms of community. In this context, some core challenges arise: – If we choose not tο rely on global players to provide peer production support at a local scale, how could different areas of peer production in the city, digital and physical, interact and support each other? – What types of governance models can adequately support peer production in the city? To address those challenges one needs to take into consideration the following: – Lessons learned from the Internet and how they may be incorporated in the context-specific realities of the city. – Knowledge-transfer methodologies across different localities. – Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations (urban studies, media studies, sociology, architecture, cultural geography, informatics, etc.). – Possible collaborations and synergies between activists that fight for the “right to the city” and those that fight for the “right to the Internet”. -Knowedge/experience transfer between non-urban settings (i.e. intentional communities, ecocommunities, the Transition movement, etc.) and the urban movements. – Inquiry into research methods and methodologies to be developed and used for analysing ICT-mediated peer production in urban space. This special issue of JoPP aims to explore a wide variety of alternative and innovative peer practices, such as urban agriculture, food sustainability, the solidarity economy, right to the city movements, cooperative housing, community networks, P2P urbanism tactics, co-design practices and more, that are directly reflected in the production of urban space. We are particularly interested in novel combinations of theory, methodologies, and practices that can contribute to peer production in the city and enable new synergies between projects and communities. Topics may include, but are not limited to: – Urban commons and peer production – Case studies of innovative peer practices approached from different perspectives – Comparative case studies on patterns of commoning and think-global / act-local methodologies – The regional dimension: examples from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia – Political issues of autonomy, hegemony, labour, gender, geopolitical and post-colonial perspectives – Alternative forms of education and learning tools for promoting self-organization and community – Innovative governance tools for peer production in the city – Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary methodological approaches – Urban studies and the right to the (hybrid) city – Open source urbanism/architecture – Recycling/upcycling vs buying: making, consuming or prosuming the city? Important dates Abstract submission: 31 January 2017 Notification to authors: 15 February 2017 Submission of full paper: 15 May 2017 Reviews to authors: 15 July 2017 Revised papers: 15 September 2017 Signals due: 10 October 2017 Issue release: October/November 2017 Submission guidelines Abstracts of 300-500 words are due by January 31, 2017 and should be sent to <city(a)peerproduction.net>. All peer reviewed papers will be reviewed according to Journal of Peer Production guidelines. See http://peerproduction.net/peer-review/process/. Full papers and materials are due by May 15, 2017 for review. Peer reviewed papers should be around 8,000 words. We also welcome experimental, alternative contributions, like testimonies, interviews and artistic treatments, whose format will be discussed case by case with the editors. *This special issue was initiated during the Hybrid City III (Athens) conference and developed further during the IASC Urban Commons (Bologna) and Habitat III (Quito) conferences.*

Hello Mathieu, Peter et al, Thank you for the invitation to become part of the JoPP board -- it's a great honour to be involved with such a great community of makers and thinkers. I've been a big fan of the work of JoPP for a while now as an open tech practitioner, and I often credit the Shared Machine Shops Issue #5 for helping inspire me to go back into academia and conduct my own research! As for what I'm up to, I'm currently doing doctoral fieldwork aimed at understanding user experiences of access, ownership and power at spaces for digital making emerging within cultural institutions in London like the Tate's Digital Studio. This work is made possible thanks to a scholarship from the University of Sussex Digital Humanities Lab: http://sussex.ac.uk/shl I'm also a critical design practitioner via http://codekat.net and have collaborated with (and learned from!) many of you here while working for various open tech orgs from Mozilla to the Open Knowledge Foundation for the past 10 years, building creative F/LOSS tools, curricula and workshops for underserved communities ala <http://mozfestartoftheweb.tumblr.com>. As far as my participation with JoPP, I'm happy to say Adrian Smith and I will be co-editing Special Issue #12, which builds on the shared machine shop insights of Issue #5 by looking at a new wave of institutionalization, practices and spaces amongst shared machine shops. This issue was proposed in collaboration with participants of a track entitled "Whose industrial revolution?" from this year's 4S/EASST Barcelona: <http://bit.ly/1SzPmvI>. I'm also happy to help with the JoPP website if needed. I look forward to learning (and continuing to be inspired) by you all! ٩(●ᴗ●)۶ // Kat ___________________________ Kat Braybrooke Doctoral Researcher, University of Sussex Humanities Lab | School of Media, Film + Music http://www.sussex.ac.uk/profiles/358413 Researcher-in-Residence, Tate Taylor Digital Studio http://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-britain/taylor-digital-studio Critical Design Practitioner @codekat <http://twitter.com/codekat> | codekat.net ---------- Forwarded message ---------- *From:* Peter Troxler *Sent:* Thursday, November 3, 2016 15:38 *To:* Journal list *Subject:* New editorial board member: Kat Braybrooke Hi all I second the nomination of Kat / Peter ------------------------------ *From:* Mathieu ONeil *Sent:* Wednesday, November 2, 2016 7:22 *To:* Journal list *Subject:* New editorial board member: Kat Braybrooke Hi all I would like to sponsor Kat Braybrooke to join our editorial board. @Kat: please briefly introduce your research interests and your intended contribution to the journal. cheers Mathieu

Dear Mathieu, many thanks for your answers. I was waiting more and i don't like to break your very good discussion about licence. Maxigas say very clear" the best copyright is the dead copyright. And you have to recognice, that the first step for every licence is the privatisation. The totally exclusion of others. Independent, if you use the knowledge of others for your work. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed about your answer. I don't understand that you don't create a space for relection of the texts in your journal. It is not a question of Journal or Blog. It is more a question of our responsibility for that, what we do. Your seperation is fictitious. Of course, we can create every form of fiction in our head. The result seems to be, that this list is the only place, where the readers of this journal texts can discuss and reflect the texts? And if i want to start a discussion about Alternative Internets i can do this only in this list? For me, this is unbelievable. many greetings, willi Asuncion, Paraguay 2016-10-17 22:08 GMT-03:00 Mathieu ONeil <mathieu.oneil(a)anu.edu.au>: > Hi Willi, all > > > This list is pretty quiet at the moment. Fw: JoPP journal #9

Hi all Forwarding for Zack... cheers Mathieu PS. I think the coordination discussions are interesting not just instrumentally but also as a sort of putting into practice some values around openness and fair debate but that's just me. For the record, not all this has been discussed before in this exact way and I was not trying to preempt debate by invoking superior knowledge of past issues (and not saying thats what Zack was saying either - just clarifying). We had a (short-lived) 'technical' list in the days when we were hosted by Oekonux, its certainly an option. cheers Mathieu ________________________________ From: Stefano Zacchiroli <zack(a)pps.univ-paris-diderot.fr> Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2016 1:09 To: Mathieu ONeil Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] JoPP journal #9 [ Off-list followup, as you might have discussed this in the past already. I agree with this. At the same time, it seems to me that the main (or maybe even the only) usage of the jopp-public list thus far has been *coordination* among the members of the editorial board, to organize the issue preparation work, or otherwise maintain the infrastructure that is needed to run the journal. A discussion venue for that is very much needed, but I understand that people who just want to discuss the *topics* covered by specific JoPP issues or articles might be put off by coordination discussions. So maybe what we need is just *another*, different mailing lists, whose purpose is to discuss the topics covered by released issues of JoPP? DOAJ: PDF and CC?
by Mathieu ONeil 30 Oct '16

Hi all A French colleague inquired whether JoPP was archived in any databases including the "easier to get into" Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). This seems like a pretty good fit for us. I checked it out and it does not seem too bad so I'm willing to give it a go. https://doaj.org/application/new However there are a few questions I'm not sure about. I've copied them all below but the most important issues IMO are PDFs and copyright. PDF We used to have a PDF generator for articles. This broke and was meant to be repaired...? This absence limits our ability to be picked up by search engines and archived in other databases. @Peter (and maxigas): is there a solution in sight? COPYRIGHT PDFs would feature this text: "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License" Now the only indication we have about copyright is "All the contents of this journal are in the public domain" (on the front page) which is a bit vague. So should we change this text to the CC licence? Any reason not to? Finally there are some questions at the end about author ownership - I assume we give all rights to authors? @Our legal experts (Angela, Steve...): any thoughts on this? cheers Mathieu SEE QUESTION AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS BELOW Publisher => Self-published?
