Re: [JoPP-Public] JoPP journal #9
Dear Mathieu, many thanks for your answers. I was waiting more and i don't like to break your very good discussion about licence. Maxigas say very clear" the best copyright is the dead copyright. And you have to recognice, that the first step for every licence is the privatisation. The totally exclusion of others. Independent, if you use the knowledge of others for your work. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed about your answer. I don't understand that you don't create a space for relection of the texts in your journal. It is not a question of Journal or Blog. It is more a question of our responsibility for that, what we do. Your seperation is fictitious. Of course, we can create every form of fiction in our head. The result seems to be, that this list is the only place, where the readers of this journal texts can discuss and reflect the texts? And if i want to start a discussion about Alternative Internets i can do this only in this list? For me, this is unbelievable. many greetings, willi Asuncion, Paraguay 2016-10-17 22:08 GMT-03:00 Mathieu ONeil <[email protected]>:
Hi Willi, all
This list is pretty quiet at the moment. There have not been theoretical discussions for a while, it's mostly used to advertise releases, coordinate actions, launch or evaluate initiatives, etc.
However if you have a substantive point about (a) specific article(s) you are welcome to post it here, and if authors or other subscribers are interested they might respond.
cheers
Mathieu
PS. This is a journal, released biannully, not a blog: that's why it's called 'the Journal of Peer Production' - not 'the Blog of Peer Production'.

Dear Mathieu, how i understand Jonathan, he ask for thematic seperation in the mailman list server. This you can do as the mailman admistrator. You can seperate news, infos, discussion and so on. Then the readers select the thematic space in the info-page of mailman. Therefore, your answer does not correspond to the question of Jonathan. greetings, willi Asuncion, Paraguay 2016-10-29 10:12 GMT-03:00 Mathieu ONeil <[email protected]>:

Dear Willi and Mathieu, Thank you for your comments. Just to clarify... as I still haven't figured out how to unsubscribe and keep the part I want to on the links you gave me. I am an academic and a designer and my interest is in the papers and literature produced on the subject of Peer Production and turning theory into action. If it is simple, I am also interested in the ability to make a comment or contribution. I imagine a space perhaps like on the Guardian newspaper web site where I can log in and make a comment and see the other comments. I am not at all interested in receiving the endless stream of back ground debates about how to run, program and develop the site. This is not my area of expertise but I can see that some people are very interested in this aspect and as you say, this is also about peer production but this part is not for me. The journal that has been produced is exquisite and that's the part that interests me - the part that engages with the out side world rather than the inner workings. This is simply a personal preference based on time availability. On the link you sent me https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/jopp-public I arrive at a complex page which is not at all user friendly and I am twarted as to how to achieve what I need or to even understand if it exists. It is not clear to me how I subscribe to the Journal update portion. Basically all I need is the occasional email notifying me that a new journal or paper is now available. My expectation would be a brief abstract and a link in that email that would take me to me to the peerproduction.net site and point to the new contribution. I would expect that if I desired to interact with the new contribution that this would be done in public on the web site. This appears to be a well developed and common way of interacting with web sites. So to be clear, I ask the question again: How do I remove my email from the current list and get a simple subscription that alerts me to Journal updates so I can go to the web site and interact if possible? As I mentioned above, perhaps this does not exist - and perhaps this type of public interaction is not your intention ? If so please let me know and please help me get off this current email list on which you are receiving this email. Many thanks. Dear Jonathan, i think, i understand you. Generally we have three ways: 1.1) pattern in the subject Actually, we have [JoPP-Public]. This we can change to JOPP-xxx for news, announce, info or similar. This are the push-list part. It is only for information from the coordinator group. And this is that, what you want. 1.2 header element This is the same, but only not visible. For both you can use your filter in your local environment. 2. mailman server
From the info-page, after login with your email address and password, we come to the user configuration page. There we find the element: Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?
but this "topic categories" the admin-group have to define. Then you can selct, what type of email you want to receive. 3) more lists Many groups use different lists. Announce(news, update, info or something) Discuss Blocked (this are the blocked mails from moderation) This means, that the "topic categories" are distributed over differen lists. Mostly the easiest way and therefore mostly used from people, they don't like to read the mailman documentation. What way you will find with Mathieu is depend of willingness. For my request it have no influence. Personally i like this full list with all different topics. Therefore, i will select all. Or, equivalent, subscribe to all lists. my request goes to an open space, without subscription, for the text reflections for all readers with an info or link in every text. The common methods are the comment function in every text. many greetings, willi Asuncion, Paraguay 2016-10-31 6:30 GMT-03:00 Jonathan Crinion <[email protected]>:
Dear Willi and Mathieu,
Thank you for your comments.
Just to clarify... as I still haven't figured out how to unsubscribe and keep the part I want to on the links you gave me.

Hi Peter, Willi, all This is an old discussion so I will summarise the main arguments: The clear benefit of having a central archived forum such as a list vs many separate comments on articles, blog posts, social media etc is that a list is "push media": everyone interested in the journal gets it, you don't need to search content out and risk missing anything. Moreover, I don't believe we are under any obligation to provide an open platform to anyone in our journal. As I see it, we are aiming to present persuasive and well-thought out ideas about P2P, and we debate collectively how best to achieve this goal on lists. Now, if someone wants to debate with an author, they can do so on this list, or do it privately, and then it would be up to the author(s) to decide whether they wanted to include an addendum to their article (for ex), or write another article. Otherwise we are essentially imposing a perspective on authors, who may not wish to have to respond to all and sundry who make critical comments. For example personally I would not like it if someone made comments such as the ones at the end of the blog post linked to below to a JoPP article, as they are not respectful and it would be embarrassing for the author: https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/discussion-a-critique-of-left-politics/2014/0... Opening all articles to comments would probably require moderation, a time-consuming activity. So, what I'm trying to say is that genuine, substantial discussion should of course be encouraged but that there needs to be mechanisms for this discussion to be freely agreed to by both sides - not imposed. cheers, Mathieu ________________________________ From: JoPP-Public <[email protected]> on behalf of Dr. Peter Troxler <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 29, 2016 21:40 To: Journal of Peer Production's general and public list Subject: Re: [JoPP-Public] JoPP journal #9 Dear Willy and all @Willy: are you referring to the peerproduction.NET<http://peerproduction.NET> site or the peerproduction.ORG<http://peerproduction.ORG> site? Dear Mathieu, many thanks for this link. I have forgotten this discussion. And now i can read, what i wroye 2 years before and i was very happy. You see the very different culture of free discussion in the P2P blog. Never they moderate any comment from me. You ask for that. And why? I read in your answer that you have this discussion about open reflection from the readers of the journal to the texts in the journal. But you don't like to follow any responsibility to the readers. We can ask, why the authors of the texts write his text. And based on the answers, we can see two basic differences: Some authors write only for publishing to create personal importness Some authors write as a contribution to clarification and enlargement The second one need the feedback, the reflection. The first hate it. And for the people they organise the journal? I think, it is very similar. You can look to Yochai Benkler. All his books, all his text are free readable. And he invite the reader for her reflection. Then look to David Bollier or Christian Fuchs. And what you see? Very different. many greetings, willi Asuncion, Paraguay 2016-10-29 10:07 GMT-03:00 Mathieu ONeil <[email protected]>:
Hi Peter, Willi, all
This is an old discussion so I will summarise the main arguments:
The clear benefit of having a central archived forum such as a list vs many separate comments on articles, blog posts, social media etc is that a list is "push media": everyone interested in the journal gets it, you don't need to search content out and risk missing anything.
For example personally I would not like it if someone made comments such as the ones at the end of the blog post linked to below to a JoPP article, as they are not respectful and it would be embarrassing for the author:
https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/discussion-a-critique-of- left-politics/2014/03/28
Opening all articles to comments would probably require moderation, a time-consuming activity. So, what I'm trying to say is that genuine, substantial discussion should of course be encouraged but that there needs to be mechanisms for this discussion to be freely agreed to by both sides - not imposed.
cheers,
Mathieu

Dear Willy and all
@Willy: are you referring to the peerproduction.NET site or the peerproduction.ORG site? Commons-base Peer Production: campaign for elections and ... <http://peerproduction.org/> peerproduction.org Campaigns for elections and elected representatives This is the future site of a Canada-wide campaign to bring commons-based peer production into view of candidates ...
The Journal of Peer Production <http://peerproduction.net/> peerproduction.net Welcome to the Journal of Peer Production. The Journal of Peer Production seeks high-quality contributions from researchers and practitioners of peer production.
@all: I'd be happy to allow discussion on articles via the site, too. I'd be happy to receive pointers / experiences with FLOSS systems ...

Hi all, My suggestion to resolve this issue would be to encourage on the JoPP web site the creation of multiple open online spaces for further discussing the articles. We could have as a "default" venue an etherpad server where authors and/or readers could create pads for discussion, whose URLs could be included at the end (or beginning) of the article. Similarly, the authors and/or could create a blog entry on their blog, a twitter hashtag, or even a Facebook group :-), and include those URLs as well in the "Further discussion" section of the article. What do you think? Panos. On 29.10.2016 00:44, willi uebelherr wrote:
Dear Mathieu,
many thanks for your answers.
