Difference between define-key and evil-define-key
by Natan Yellin 11 Oct '11

What is the difference between these two lines? (define-key evil-normal-state-map ",b" 'ido-switch-buffer) (evil-define-key 'normal ",b" 'ido-switch-buffer) I'm not subscribed to the list, so please CC me. evil-surround no longer works
by Christoph LANGE 07 Oct '11

07 Oct '11

Hi Tim, hi all, I'm using evil in this version … commit 838bbb7710ccaef6d37414d08321846bb865a3de Author: Frank Fischer <frank.fischer(a)mathematik.tu-chemnitz.de> Date: Tue Oct 4 11:25:29 2011 +0200 … and evil-surround in that version: commit 852a7bae1289f9f503410e0a4d8467b289b8b1c1 Author: Tim Harper <timcharper(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat Aug 13 09:22:32 2011 -0600 When surround-mode is enabled, the relevant keyboard combinations are dead. E.g. suppose the situation [ | ] where | denotes the point. The following keyboard combinations don't do anything: ds] – ds waits for one character but doesn't do anything after reading ] cs]} – cs also just waits for _one_ character, which is strange, and then } behaves as if I had entered it in normal mode, i.e. it executes evil-forward-paragraph. This behavior seems to be independent from whether there are actually surrounding brackets. Cheers, Christoph -- Christoph Lange, http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Langec, Skype duke4701

Evil: Insert mode RET behaving weirdly in SML-mode and Haskell-mode
by Sarah Brofeldt 05 Oct '11

05 Oct '11

I don't know how to diagnose this properly sadly since the evil-ret motion confuses me, but in Haskell mode and SML-mode and probably others, return behaves oddly with respect to the indentation level you would expect, i.e. the one you would get by switching to Emacs state. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? -- Sarah

Evil, Aquamacs, ctrl-w, and undo
by Alan Schmitt 05 Oct '11

05 Oct '11

Hello, I've been bitten by this several times, and I'm wondering if this is a bug or if it's something I'm doing wrong. I'm writing some text, in insert mode, and I want to go to the next window. So I hit "ctrl-w ctrl-w", and it deletes to words as I forgot to get out of insert mode. The problem is I cannot undo this: if I get to normal mode and do "u", I get back further in the history. If I do a redo (ctrl-r), I cannot get the words back. (I also tried doing "cmd-z" without leaving insert mode, and the problem is the same.) Looking at the key description, it's bound to "aquamacs-backward-kill-word". I'm going to try to unbind it, but I'm wondering if the fact that I cannot undo this action is a bug. Thanks, Alan

Use vi key in minibuffer?
by York Zhao 05 Oct '11

05 Oct '11

Hi, I noticed that vi keys has been disabled in `evil-initialize', I tried to enable it but once I get into minibuffer I could no longer get out. Is it possible to use evil mode in minibuffer? This can be very helpful when doing lengthy edit like composing regexp in minibuffer. York

typo?

Hi, I think there is a typo in commit message of 838bbb where "evil-last-sexp" should be "eval-last-sexp". York

evil-next-visual-line no longer works
by Christoph LANGE 04 Oct '11

04 Oct '11

Dear evil developers, a while ago (can't name the date nor the revision) evil-next-visual-line stopped working for me. It simply doesn't do anything any more, while Emacs's own mechanism still works Here are the keystrokes for reproducing the bug in an empty buffer: a w o r d SPC <escape> . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . <escape> ^ g j <down> g k C-h l Please repeat the "." until you got more than one line. gj (evil-next-visual-line) doesn't work for me. <down> works, while line-move-visual is set to t. That gets me to the next visual line, and from that point gk (evil-previous-visual-line) works. Cheers, and thanks for any help, Christoph -- Christoph Lange, http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Langec, Skype duke4701

How to advice `evil-delete'
by York Zhao 03 Oct '11

03 Oct '11

Hi, I've been straggling with this for the entire afternoon and am really really frustrated. What I want is that when deleting an empty line, I don't want it to be yanked, just delete. So I adviced `evil-delete' like this and it worked as I expected. (defadvice evil-delete (around around-delete (beg end type register yank-handler) activate) (if (eq type 'line) (let (here) (save-excursion (goto-char beg) (skip-chars-forward " \n\t" end) (setq here (point))) (if (eq here end) (flet ((evil-yank (&rest args) t)) ad-do-it) ad-do-it)) ad-do-it)) However, as soon as I add another advice on `evil-yank', things stopped working correctly, even thougt the yank advice is empty like the following, things still not working properly. (defadvice evil-yank (around around-yank (beg end type register yank-handler) activate) ad-do-it) The problem is that after I deleted an empty line, I could no longer yank anything, whenever I yank I get the errer: Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument commandp evil-yank) call-interactively(evil-yank nil nil) Could anybody give me some idea of where the problem is? Am I supposed to advice these "special" operator functions and is there anything "special" in advicing them? Thanks in advace, York

evil-numbers now available via package.el
by Michael Markert 01 Oct '11

01 Oct '11

Well at least via package.el on marmalade: http://marmalade-repo.org The package is here: http://marmalade-repo.org/packages/evil-numbers As soon as I figure out how to submit to GNU ELPA it will be there, too. If it will be accepted, that is. Michael
