This is an opportunity to take a senior role in the organization that sponsors the GNU project, publishes the GNU GPL and works to promote the message that software freedom is a civil liberty. * <http://www.fsf.org/news/job-opening-fsf-campaigns-manager> ## GPL Enforcement in Apple's App Store An iPhone port of GNU Go is currently being distributed through Apple's App Store. However, this distribution is not in compliance with the GNU GPL. The primary problem is that Apple imposes numerous legal restrictions on use and distribution of GNU Go through the iTunes Store Terms of Service, which is forbidden by section 6 of GPLv2. So today we have written to Apple and asked them to come into compliance. We would be happy to see Apple distribute these programs under the GPL's terms, but unfortunately, it seems much more likely that they'll simply make the problem go away by removing GNU Go from the App Store. * <http://www.fsf.org/news/2010-05-app-store-compliance> ## GNU Hackers' Meetings, July 24th-25th, 2010 GNU Hackers' Meetings are informal meetings for GNU maintainers and active contributors. A GNU Hackers' Meeting will be held on July 24th-25th, 2010, during the GUADEC 2010 conference in The Hague, Netherlands. The free secure networking and decentralized applications issues will be discussed. This is a technical meeting and all GNU contributors are invited! * <http://www.gnu.org/ghm/> ## Defective by Design: Design a new sticker! FSF's Defective by Design campaign is having a contest for designing a new sticker. The existing pink one features the problem of DRM'd music on iPod, and it was pink to fit Apple's pink iPod advertising back in 2006. However, now we need to make one that focuses on DRM'd applications, games and movies on iPod, iPhone and iPad. The contest will be held until the end of May and the three best designers will get a LibrePlanet t-shirt! Join and let your designer friends know! * <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/new-sticker> ## FSF responds to Jobs's "Thoughts on Flash" Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, wrote about his "Thoughts on Flash" and mentioned several reasons why Apple does not allow Adobe Flash on their iPad, iPhone and iPad devices and he included the fact that it is not an 'open standard'. Our operations manager, John Sullivan, responded to that and published an article on ArsTechnica. * <http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/04/pot-meet-kettle-a-response-to-ste…> * <http://www.fsf.org/news/fsf-responds-to-jobss-thoughts-on-flash> ## Ryzom is Free: Breakthrough for Free Software Gaming Earlier this month, the FSF welcomed the release of online game Ryzom -- all source code and artistic assets to the free software development community. The source code was released under the GNU Affero General Public License, and the artwork was released under Creative Commons' Attribution ShareAlike License. More than two-million lines of source code and 20,000 high quality arts are now available to the community in an online repository. * <http://www.fsf.org/news/free-ryzom-1> ## FSF launches free extension listing for OpenOffice.org The FSF has launched a free software extension listing for the popular office suite OpenOffice.org to replace the current, official one that recommends non-free extensions. The FSF asked the OpenOffice.org Community Council to list only free software extensions, or to provide a second independent listing which only included free extensions, but they declined to change their policy. Therefore, the FSF has launched an effort to assemble a replacement extension library, which will list only the extensions that are free. * <http://fsf.org/news/fsf-launches-free-software-extension-listing-for-openof…> ## GNU Project publishes GNU Accessibility Statement The GNU Project has published an initiative to create features that can be used by people with low vision, deafness, learning and reading disabilities, and for people with mobility and other physical issues who can use an on-screen keyboard. > According to the United Nations in 2005, there were 600 million > people with disabilities in the world. To use computers, many of them > need special software known as “access technology”. Like other > programs, these can be free software or proprietary. Those which are > free software respect the freedom of their users; the rest, > proprietary programs, subject those users to the power of the > program's owner. * <http://www.gnu.org/accessibility/accessibility.html> ## Chris Hofstader appointed as GNU access technology director The FSF has appointed Chris Hofstader as the GNU access technology director. Hofstader has been a software engineer for about thirty years. He had a moderate to severe vision impairment until he was about 35, when he slid into profound blindness. He officially joined the GNU Project in February of this year. * <http://www.fsf.org/news/chris-hofstader-gnu-access-technology-director> ## iQuenching your iThirst On May 1st, Boston's main water supply was hit by a burst main, polluting much of the water and making it unsafe to drink. The FSF staff and volunteers took the chance to serve the community and to educate the public in the Day Against DRM and they had a 'Free Water' activity at a nearby Apple Store in Boston. * <http://www.defectivebydesign.org/iquench> ## GNU Spotlight with Karl Berry The recent GNU software releases: coreutils-8.5 gnue-forms-0.6.3 mit-scheme-9.0.1 diffutils-3.0 gnue-navigator-0.1.0 parallel-20100424 freedink-1.08.20100420 gnue-reports-0.2.0 sipwitch-0.8.2 freeipmi-0.8.5 gnutrition-0.31 smalltalk-3.2 gawk-3.1.8 gv-3.6.9 ucommon-2.1.3 global-5.8.2 help2man-1.38.2 xboard-4.4.3 gnue-appserver-0.5.3 libtasn1-2.6 xorriso-0.5.6 gnue-common-0.6.9 libunistring-0.9.3 To get announcements of most new GNU packages, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: <http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu>. “Mejor que se discuta, la polemica hace crecer a las sociedades”
by Pablo Manuel Rizzo 25 May '10

25 May '10

--- http://m.pagina12.com.ar/diario/elpais/1-146308.html -- Pablo Manuel Rizzo ------------------------------- http://pablorizzo.com -------------------------------

Fwd: Pirate Party Hosting Pirate Bay in Pro-P2P Gesture
by Diego Saravia 25 May '10

25 May '10

no solo censuran en solar ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Seth Johnson Date: 2010/5/24 Subject: Pirate Party Hosting Pirate Bay in Pro-P2P Gesture > http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/05/pirate-party-hosting-pirate… Pirate Party hosting Pirate Bay in pro-P2P political gesture By Nate Anderson Last updated May 18, 2010 10:43 AM After a German injunction took out its ISP, The Pirate Bay went dark yesterday. Today, it's back up. Just another round of Whac-A-Mole? Yes, but this time the game got more serious: Sweden's Piratpartiet (Pirate Party), a legitimate political party with two members in the European Parliament, has taken on direct responsibility for hosting the site. "When other politicians appoint committees and try to pass the buck, the Pirate Party instead takes responsibility and acts with its own resources to protect the nation’s information safety and fundamental freedom of speech. We are now The Pirate Bay’s Internet service provider," said Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge (http://press.piratpartiet.se/2010/05/18/piratpartiet-levererar-pirate-bays-…) This sounds principled—noble even. The Pirate Party goes on to say that "the proposals to censor The Pirate Bay from the Internet [are] an attempt to silence one of today’s most important voices related to civil liberties and freedom on the net. It is nothing less than political censorship, which every democratically minded person must condemn." Enter Dr. Lolcat If you're a Pirate Bay administrator, however, here's how you sum up all the high-minded talk about censorship, free speech, and democracy: LOL! AS U MITE HAS READ OR NOTICD, PEEPS ONCE AGAIN R TRYIN 2 SHUT US DOWN. DIS WILL NOT SUCCED, LOL. OURS RLY NICE WEBHOST WUZ THREATEND WIF RLY HUGE FINE, SO WE DECIDD 2 MOOV TEH SIET SO DAT THEY DIDNT GOT INTO TROUBLE, LOL. TEH DECISHUN 2 MOOV WUZ TAKEN BY US, TEH PIRATE BAY, LOL. TEH PIRATE BAY IZ AN UNSINKABLE SHIP. IT WILL SAIL TEH INTERWEBS 4 AS LONG AS WE WANTS IT 2. REMEMBR DAT, K THX. TPB, ONLY IN IT 4 TEH LULZ SINCE 2003. Are they in it "4 the lulz," or for democracy? A set of bolded letters in the all-caps blog post gave us an answer: "ASSCLOWNS OV TEH RIAA." The post was authored by one "Dr. LOLCAT." The Pirate Party's decision to host the site poses a direct challenge to the Swedish legal system, which has already found the site operators guilty of copyright infringement (an appeal will be heard later this year). Christian Engström, the first Pirate MEP sent to Brussels, wants to alter the legal structure of copyright Europe-wide, and this move will certainly raise the question more urgently in the Swedish press. "Limiting file sharing with laws and punishments doesn’t work," wrote Engström recently. "More of the same won’t either. File sharing is here to stay, like it or not. We should keep copyright, but limit it to when there is commercial intent. All noncommercial copying and use, such as file sharing, should be legalized... What the society has been doing so far isn’t working. There is no way to stop file sharing. It’s time we tried something else." He believes that people will always spend the same amount of money on entertainment, and the file-sharing doesn't reduce this pool of money. Instead, it merely shuffles it around, away from plastic discs and toward live music, for instance. Copyright should only cover "commercial" use. "All it takes is the political momentum to get things moving," he wrote. "I am hoping that we can build that momentum in the European Parliament. I think it can be done." Ways to comply The record labels aren't so keen on this approach, and they have traveled across Europe grabbing injunctions against ISPs, against BitTorrent search engines like Mininova and The Pirate Bay, and against The Pirate Bay's own hosting services. This week, they secured such an injunction against Cyberbunker, a German ISP that was hosting The Pirate Bay's front page (the trackers are hosted elsewhere). The first page of the injunction: http://static.arstechnica.com/2010/05/18/hamburg-injunction.png While Sven Olaf Kamphuis, the man who runs Cyberbunker, has unabashed sympathies for the Pirate Party and The Pirate Bay, he was facing fines of €250,000 per infringement and possible jail time as long as he kept hosting the site. Despite his desire to fight, Kamphuis had no real choice but to honor the injunction. "Yes, we did [take down the site]," he told Ars, "as it is a legally valid prohibition for us to provide Internet for the servers of The Pirate Bay as long as there are torrent files on it for those six movies." According to the injunction from a Hamburg court, the six films referenced by Kamphuis are: The Bounty Hunter, Alice in Wonderland, Our Family Wedding, Green Zone, Repo Men, and Cop Out. These were the films cited by the studios in their complaint to the court. Kamphuis told us The Pirate Bay faced three options. First was the choice to remove all torrent files from the site and use magnet links, which don't require a tracker. This is "not desirable as a lot of clients still require .torrent files." Second, the site could filter out those six particular film names from its index, but this "could lead to the movie torrent files still being available under a misspelled name." Finally, The Pirate Bay could get another ISP. "They are working on it as we speak," said Kamphuis. He was right. Though the site still conceals the location of its servers, it has now returned to Sweden for its connection to the Internet, and The Pirate Party has decided to get involved. -- Diego Saravia Diego.Saravia(a)gmail.com NO FUNCIONA->dsa(a)unsa.edu.ar
