Fwd: [Parrot-users] Rakudo Star 2013.01 released
by Diego Saravia 31 Jan '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Moritz Lenz <moritz(a)faui2k3.org> Date: 2013/1/30 Subject: [Parrot-users] Rakudo Star 2013.01 released To: perl6-users(a)perl.org, perl6-language(a)perl.org, perl6-compiler(a)perl.org, parrot-users(a)lists.parrot.org Announce: Rakudo Star - a useful, usable, "early adopter" distribution of Perl 6 On behalf of the Rakudo and Perl 6 development teams, I'm happy to announce the January 2013 release of "Rakudo Star", a useful and usable distribution of Perl 6. The tarball for the January 2013 release is available from <http://rakudo.org/downloads/star/>. A Windows .MSI version of Rakudo star will usually appear in the downloads area shortly after the tarball release. In the Perl 6 world, we make a distinction between the language ("Perl 6") and specific implementations of the language such as "Rakudo Perl". This Star release includes release 2013.01 [0] of the Rakudo Perl 6 compiler [1], version 4.10.0 of the Parrot Virtual Machine [2], and various modules, documentation, and other resources collected from the Perl 6 community. Some of the new features added to this release include: * Sink context (what some other languages call void context) is now enforced correctly. This means that for-loops are now lazy by default. It fixes the bug where a map in sink context would not execute, and also means that a Failure returned to sink context will be properly thrown. * 'require' now works with indirect module names * Restored socket read semantics to returning the requested number of bytes * $obj.Some::Role::meth() now passes the correct $obj * try/CATCH now returns Nil when the CATCH is triggered, rather than the exception; this brings it in line with try without a CATCH * whatever-star cases of splice now implemented * can now import multis with the same name from different modules, provided all dispatchers are onlystar This release also contains a range of bug fixes, improvements to error reporting and better failure modes. The following features have been deprecated or modified from previous releases due to changes in the Perl 6 specification, and are being removed or changed as follows: * postcircumfix:<[ ]> and postcircumfix:<{ }> will become multi-subs rather than multi-methods. Both at_pos and at_key will remain methods. * Unary hyper ops currently descend into nested arrays and hashes. This will change to make them equivalent to a one-level map. * The Str.ucfirst builtin is deprecated; it will be replaced by Str.tc. * Leading whitespace in rules and under :sigspace will no longer be converted to <.ws> . For existing regexes that expect this conversion, add a <?> in front of leading whitespace to make it meta again. * The ?-quantifier on captures in regexes currently binds the capture slot to a List containing either zero or one Match objects; i.e., it is equivalent to "** 0..1". In the future, the ?-quantifier will bind the slot directly to a captured Match or to Nil. Existing code can manage the transition by changing existing ?-quantifiers to use "** 0..1", which will continue to return a List of matches. There are some key features of Perl 6 that Rakudo Star does not yet handle appropriately, although they will appear in upcoming releases. Some of the not-quite-there features include: * advanced macros * threads and concurrency * Unicode strings at levels other than codepoints * interactive readline that understands Unicode * non-blocking I/O * much of Synopsis 9 There is an online resource at http://perl6.org/compilers/features that lists the known implemented and missing features of Rakudo and other Perl 6 implementations. In many places we've tried to make Rakudo smart enough to inform the programmer that a given feature isn't implemented, but there are many that we've missed. Bug reports about missing and broken features are welcomed at <rakudobug(a)perl.org>. See http://perl6.org/ for links to much more information about Perl 6, including documentation, example code, tutorials, reference materials, specification documents, and other supporting resources. A draft of a Perl 6 book is available as <docs/UsingPerl6-draft.pdf> in the release tarball. The development team thanks all of the contributors and sponsors for making Rakudo Star possible. If you would like to contribute, see <http://rakudo.org/how-to-help>, ask on the perl6-compiler(a)perl.org mailing list, or join us on IRC #perl6 on freenode. che en el FB de IEEE Argentina se puede ver un link en el que se puede leer lo siguiente: "Según una sentencia de la Corte de Apelación el propietario del terminal sólo adquiere una licencia de uso sobre el sistema operativo y los programas contenidos en el mismo por lo que resulta contrario al derecho de propiedad intelectual cualquier modificación del software, lo que incluye el código que impide que el dispositivo pueda funcionar bajo la red de otro operador diferente." o sea q pretenden que se trate al "soft" como si fuera un "hard" pero para que hacer soft si no lo podrás cambiar, ni podrás contratar alguien (un suponer, yo) que lo haga? que le quedará de "soft"? que barbaridad, propia de dinosaurios recalcitrantes, no entendieron nada... es como si quisieran apagar los meteoritos digitales con sifones de papel no merece un estentóreo prrt! a coro? http://www.theinquirer.es/2013/01/28/liberar-tu-movil-en-usa-multas-de-hast… -- Gerardo Díaz email: gerardo.diaz(a)gmail.com blog: http://QueHacemosConLasPilas.WordPress.com

Re: [Solar-general] Perl isn't going anywhere -- for better or worse

> Perl isn't going anywhere -- for better or worse > Perl isn't going anywhere. A massive number of tools and projects still make the most out of the language. But it's hard to see Perl regaining its former glory without a dramatic turnaround in the near term. Fwd: Demand justice for Aaron Swartz
by Diego Saravia 17 Jan '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lawrence Lessig Subject: Demand justice for Aaron Swartz To: Diego Saravia <diego.saravia(a)gmail.com> <http://act.demandprogress.org/go/834?t=1&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0>Diego, *Click here to join Demand Progress and me in demanding justice for our friend Aaron Swartz. <http://act.demandprogress.org/go/834?t=2&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0>* [image: [fb]] If you're already on *Facebook*, click here to share with your friends.<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/832?t=3&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> [image: [fb]] If you're already on *Twitter*, click here to tweet about the campaign: Tweet<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/833?t=4&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> We spent Tuesday burying and mourning our friend Aaron. We're sad, we're tired, we're frustrated -- *and we're angry* at a system that let this happen to Aaron. Now we want to set upon honoring his life's work and helping to make sure that such a travesty is never repeated. We and Aaron's friends and family have been in touch with lawmakers to ask for help, and several of them -- who've worked with Aaron and Demand Progress on SOPA and other issues -- are beginning to take action. *We're asking them to help rein in a criminal justice system run amok*. Authorities are encouraged to bring frivolous charges and hold decades of jail time over the heads of people who are accused of committing victimless crimes. Click here to join us in demanding justice for Aaron and help make sure this never happens to anybody else.<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/834?t=5&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> 1) Representative Zoe Lofgren has introduced what's been named "Aaron's Law." It would fix a key part of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), which is one of the statutes under which Aaron was indicted. * We need to pass Aaron's Law AND further amend the CFAA.* The CFAA makes violations of a website's terms of service agreement or user agreement -- that fine print you never read before you check the box next to it -- a FELONY, potentially punishable by many years in prison. That's how over-broad this dangerous statute is, and one way it lets showboating prosecutors file charges against people who've done nothing wrong. *Aaron's Law would decriminalize violating these agreements*: They're essentially contracts, and as with other contracts, disputes about them should be settled in civil courts rather than in out of control criminal trials under threat of decades of prison time. As currently written, Aaron's Law alone wouldn't have saved Aaron -- there is still more to do to make sure that victimless computer activities are not charged as felonies -- *but this is a solid start that we can pass now and it's a law he wanted to change.* Then we'll keep pushing forward. Click here to join us in demanding justice for our friend Aaron Swartz.<http://act.demandprogress.org/go/834?t=6&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> 2) Additionally, we asked Congressman Darrell Issa -- who controls the powerful Oversight Committee -- to open an investigation into prosecutorial misconduct in Aaron's case. *Amazingly, he's already responded and is sending an investigator to the office of the U.S. Attorney who was pressing charges against Aaron. * We want the inquiry to proceed, and to be broadened to include a more thorough investigation into rampant over-prosecution of alleged crimes with no victims -- as in the case of what Aaron was accused of. *And we want those who abused their power to be held to account. *We loved Aaron -- so many people loved Aaron -- *and his death is tragic*. We and others who were close to him are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, and the calls for justice. Thank you for joining us in that fight. Click here to join us in demanding justice for Aaron -- let's fix this system. <http://act.demandprogress.org/go/834?t=7&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> [image: [fb]] If you're already on *Facebook*, click here to share with your friends. <http://act.demandprogress.org/go/832?t=8&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> [image: [fb]] If you're already on *Twitter*, click here to tweet about the campaign: Tweet <http://act.demandprogress.org/go/833?t=9&akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0> -Demand Progress and Lawrence Lessig Paid for by Demand Progress (DemandProgress.org<http://demandprogress.org/?akid=1969.609406.rRfSs0>) and not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee.
