Hi John, The ALSA matrix shows many USB MIDI hardware supported by the drivers (snd-usb-audio), but for many of them the user needs non-free software firmwares (this is not showed into the ALSA matrix [4]) I dont really know about all the MIDI USB devices in the world, but I am sure about this ones from M-Audio (midiman) [1] * This USB MIDI interfaces are supported by ALSA and don't need non-free firmware: M Audio USB MidiSport Duo M Audio USB MidiSport Quatro MidiSport 2x4 [3] Newer KeyStation models (49e, 61es, Pro 88) * This USB MIDI interfaces are supported by OSS [2] and don't need non-free firmware: MidiSport 1x1 MidiSport 2x2 Also, there is a non-free package that contains non-free firmware to support other similar devices: "The project page is <http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/>. For help, discussion or feedback, send a mail to the mailing list at <usb-midi-fw-user(a)lists.sourceforge.net>.written by Clemens Ladisch <clemens(a)ladisch.de>" Supported devices with non-free firmware: - MidiSport 4x4 - MidiSport 8x8 - MidiSport Uno - Keystation (old models) - Oxygen - Radium "There is also an OSS driver by NAGANO Daisuke supporting the MidiSport 1x1/2x2 with GPL'd firmware written by Lars Dölle. [Musix-users] USB Midiman non-free, RMS: "If we are going to do this, the next step is to figure out who to talk to..."

We would like that. If you want to do it, please write to johns(a)gnu.org and he can accept the info from you. > Is there any chance we could convince Midiman > to change this policy? Well... we must try: If we are going to do this, the next step is to figure out who to talk to, and that person's addresses or phone numbers, and what language to talk with him in. Then we need someone who speaks that language, to call that person. Want to start? Another idea: If the non-free code is available in source code, someone could study that code, get the ideas out of it, and write a completely different program (not copying any details, of course, since those are copyrighted). This new program could be free.

Gina20 firmware missing
by Johannes M. Stolba 21 Jun '06

21 Jun '06

Dear Marcos, Thanks for releasing 0.49! I gave it a second try with this version to get my Gina20 card running. It looks as if I would get a little closer, but not close enough :-( snd-gina20 is being loaded but during startup an error message occurs, saying that the firmware can not be found. These are the messages printed in /var/log/dmesg: pci_hotplug: PCI Hot Plug PCI Core version: 0.5 shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version: 0.4 PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 0000:00:0e.0 ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/echoaudio/echoaudio.c:45: get_firmware(): Firmware not available (-2) Echoaudio Gina20: probe of 0000:00:0e.0 failed with error -2 8139cp: 10/100 PCI Ethernet driver v1.2 (Mar 22, 2004) The directories /lib/firmware and /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware are both empty, should they be? What can I do? Do I have to download ALSA sources and compile by myself? Thanks for your help! -- Johannes M. Still can't connect to internet
by John Wimbere 21 Jun '06

21 Jun '06

Marcos, Thanks for your previous reply. I tried "dhclient eth0" as you suggested but that did not work. The output did not seem to generate any errors, but unfortunately I could not save the output because Musix did not recognize my Lexar USB JumpDrive. I must be missing some detail with pppoeconfig. If you have any other ideas I'm willing to try them. Thanks, John Wimbere __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Midisport?
by MNO 19 Jun '06

19 Jun '06

Hello, Where can i find a tutorial to configuring the midisport interface under Musix? I noticed that the interface is not detected on boot, i need to unplug and reconnect the USB cable, then USB detects it. But as a 'unknown device'. So now i need to learn how to get it working in Musix/Rosegarden. I'm still working from the Live CD. Any hints are welcome! Internet connection problem
by John Wimbere 19 Jun '06

19 Jun '06

Hello, I'm a usual user of Fedora and SuSE and after discovering your distro I wanted to give it a try. Overall, I like the selection of apps and the options you've built into it, but I'm facing an obstacle: I cannot establish an internet connection with Musix. I've tried just running it as a live CD and installing it on an older Thinkpad. Both machines have integrated ethernet. pppoeconfig appears proceed normally and trigger my DSL connection, but then Firefox cannot bring up a website and apt-get cannot update. I have Knoppix 4.0 LiveDVD and to test, I had the same problem there. Had the same problem when I installed Agnula/Demudi. I've never had a problem configuring my DSL connection with Fedora or SuSE. Do you have any insight as to why I can't with Debian distros? And this is odd, because with older Knoppix releases like 3.7 or 3.9 I had no problems whatsoever. Thanks, John Wimbere __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
