midisport firmware, jack and version .59
by rutmang 24 Sep '06

Hello All, If I sound like a newbie, I am -- linux *and* midi. I would like to be able to use my keyboard through a midisport uno usb midi interface in Musix (ZynAdd, Speciman). I fire up Jack and zynadd. In Jack I midi-connect my midisport to zynadd, zynadd is already audio-connected to my sound card. I can conrol zynadd with its onscreen keyboard (and the "virtual keyboard" app if I map it in Jack). I can't by using the my midisport keyboard. I understand I need firmware loaded into the midisport in order to have it function properly. I've downloaded the *midisport-firmware-1.2.tar.gz* and followed the compile instructions. A requirement according to the readme is *udev* I fire up synaptic, check udev and apply. This uninstalls hotplug. After udev is installed, I run configure, make and make install. I think the rules are supposed to automatically load the firmware, but it still does not control the app, even after reboot. I see /dev/midi1 and try #cat /dev/midi1 (I've read elsewhere) and hit some keys -- nothing. Maybe I'm missing something simple in my ignorance? One other thing - I'm using the .59 version and I need to run #modprobe snd_seq in order to launch Jack with out popping a midi error. Maybe this is an incomplete command to get it to go? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Musix 0.59 CD does not boot
by Jack Langdon 23 Sep '06

Hi, I seem not to be able to boot Musix 0.59 CD even though several other live linux CD's boot just fine. I noticed that someone had a similar problem with Musix 0.50: https://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/musix-users/2006-August/000280.html In that previous case, the user managed to boot the CD on a different computer. However, I only have one computer to play with, and thus would like to hear if there is anything I could do. Was there any conclusion about the problem with Musix 0.50? If booting the CD just does not work for me, is there any workaround, i.e., boot from floppy or HD (just remember that I can not boot the CD to create such floppies)? Thank you in advance, Jack Langdon

Was there some bad version of mkisofs getting around ? Yes: 4:2.01+01a03-5 from Debian/testing..... I builded the last ISO using 4:2.0+a27-1 from debian/stable, but there is another mkisofs version into debian/unstable: 5:1.0~pre4-1 0 Pero igual, ya ni loco lo hago con un debian que no sea estable! Burning CD throws errors and resulting CD won't boot; tried 2 downloads to ensure integrity
by Q IP 19 Sep '06

Hi all: Musix looks like just what I'm after, but I don't seem to be able to even get into the splash screen. I have gone through the following routine twice: 1. I download the latest ISO on my Win2k box (the only one with a broadband connection) 2. The download aborts 3. I start the download again 4. The download succeeds 5. I start Nero Express to burn the image to disk 6. Nero returns a block size error and asks me if I want to ignore or try to correct it OK, the first time I clicked ignore and burned a CD that seemed to be fine but wouldn't boot on either of my two boxes with varying hardware. The second time, I clicked "correct" and tried various settings which did nothing. Not wanting to waste another CD on a coaster, I gave up. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Thanks, Ken Quad

el nuevo live-CD de Musix 0.59 también tiene el problema (pero tengo la solución )
by Marcos Guglielmetti 15 Sep '06

(Or it still only booted at work?) And do you have any clue what it is with your PC at home that causes the problem? My setup is listed earlier in this thread - perhaps there is a common nominator with yours? The behaviour seems to be the same: md5 is ok, the CD file structure looks OK but it is just not recognized as a bootable CD when booting the computer. And it is only with Musix - other Live CD's work just fine. I am using Roxio Easy CD Creator v5.1 (old software but I have never had any problems with it before). > > If booting the CD just does not work for me, is there any workaround, i.e., > > boot from floppy or HD (just remember that I can not boot the CD to create > > such floppies)? > > Yes: I have no floppy here, I dont use them, but, it's possible, try using: > > /KNOPPIX/utils/* > > From: /KNOPPIX/knoppix-docs/KNOPPIX-FAQ-EN.txt Thanks, I'll look into it.
