Musix is being used at Joe Wilson Intermediate School in Cedar Hill, Texas, USA
by Marcos Guglielmetti 25 Jan '07

Article: http://www.musix.org.ar/wordpress/?p=53 Musix is being used at Joe Wilson Intermediate School in Cedar Hill, Texas, USA The school teacher Marilyn Hagle (marilyn.hagle [ … ] chisd.com) is using Musix in her lessons of music at Joe Wilson Intermediate School in Cedar Hill, Texas, USA. “I am a 5th/6th grade general music teacher and use bootable Musix CDs in our computer lab with students once a week. It rocks! First the students work on the easy rhythm practice exercises in Solfege. Then we go to the Hydrogen Drum Machine program and the students write their own rhythm patterns. I have each class for only twelve weeks a year. This twelve weeks term we are going to try compose a melody and add percussion to it. Note Edit would be the easiest to use with this age group, but in the .5 version it doesn’t load the synthesizer consistantly (could be user error of course :) ). I am downloading your latest release right now, so maybe that will have a fix.” We are working to debug this problem, maybe related to Timidity. “It might interest you to know that the students are now working on composing percussion accompaniments in Hydrogen for the program. We will be singing our school song, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” and playing a melody from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on our recorders . . . all with Hydrogen accompaniments. :)” She have taught also in Minnesota and Chicago, her BA is in music and her MA in media communications, also she is certified to teach music and technology applications in Texas. Well, boys, another woman using GNU/Linux! But, “sadly”, she is married ;) Marilyn started using computers in the classroom in 1982, she moved to Free Software in 1998, and she thinks educators are crazy or lazy for not using GNU+Linux. Just a last note… Marilyn is exited about the new apps that were included into the last Musix’s version, 0.79 (we included them thinking about the needs of artistic schools and rock bands): “I was so excited to download your latest version and see it included Cinelerra and Blender!! Before I took this job, I taught high school computer animation using Blender (fabulous!). One of my educational goals has been to teach kids how to write their own songs and make them into music videos!!” Thanks Marilyn Hagle for using, teaching and spread Free Software! -- Marcos Guglielmetti * Director del desarrollo de Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre * CD Donwload: (http://www.musix.org.ar/en/) * Videos, programas y otras cosas en: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix/ * Reporte de errores a: https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Problemas-Bugs *IRC: #musix channel on freenode * http://autosus.wordpress.com/

New kernel for testing!

Hello Tapsa > New kernel > http://linux.ilmainen.net/musix/linux-2.6.20-rc5-rt7-SMP/ Thanks: users and collaborator, please test and report! ! ! ;-) (Do you have some time to rest, Tapsa? hehehe) > The kernel is OK but with aufs (or something) seems to be difficulties. Oh, hell > I'm not sure what causes this that I can do a liveCD and boot it from > Qemu fine but burning a CD causes Segmentation fault and boot fails > after 'Accessing KNOPPIX filesystem' (see > http://lists.debian.org/debian-knoppix/2007/01/msg00072.html) Really odd; the kernel's world is crazy! > I try to > check it soon if I can. Anyhow aufs loads fine by insmod and really > works in hd installed kernel. > Fine, we will test it soon. I tested the last kernel from the HD: it works better than the old 2.6.20 series builded by you, if we talk about realtime JACK apps: so, I think it's better than previous versions. But I am still trying to solve the non-root user problem with realtime privileges: I will change my PAM modules so maybe it could solve this problem. I thik I've solved the problem with the Inet connection. I guess the problem was with the mtu size. But here is another one: when starting jack it gives an error and following log 17:23:59.726 Patchbay deactivated. 17:23:59.794 Statistics reset. 17:23:59.803 Could not open ALSA sequencer as a client. MIDI patchbay will be not available. ALSA lib seq_hw.c:457:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file or directory I looked at /dev/snd/ and there is really no such directory. I didn't have such error on other systems. May be I should reconfigure Soun card driver? -----Original Message----- From: musix-users-request(a)lists.ourproject.org To: musix-users(a)lists.ourproject.org Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:00:27 +0100 Subject: Musix-users Digest, Vol 17, Issue 7 > > Send Musix-users mailing list submissions to > musix-users(a)lists.ourproject.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/musix-users > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > musix-users-request(a)lists.ourproject.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > musix-users-owner(a)lists.ourproject.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Musix-users digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. can not connect to the Internet
by ali rustamov 17 Jan '07

17 Jan '07

Well I used synaptic and I hope there will not be any difficuties. As I see everithyng is preconfigured there. But I can not connect to the Internet via my pppoe connection. I was mainly using a mandrake based distribution and with this pppoe connect things are very simple there. I saw two connection related links on a musix desktop:pppoeconf or something in a way and another one near it. which gave to choose dhcp or manual. Well I went trough both wizzards but after all I just dont know what to do. It was shown to start by pon dsl-provider but that didn´t work.May be I didn´t write it correctly.. And another one problem is graphics. when I drag a window for example it goes very slow hence it´s not related to CPU I think. Yes, and the istaller from a Live cd didn´t work from an english session. It omly worked from default.
