"This is (IMHO) the best 'out of the box' system for musicians yet"
by Marcos Guglielmetti 18 Jun '06

From: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=138416 "Musix GNU+Linux:(this one was mentioned quite a while ago by someone here; Thank you for the great tip, whoever that was! This is (IMHO) the best 'out of the box' system for musicians yet; Based on knoppix, you can test the live CD version to see how you like it. It has everything you will need to make music in a variety of ways, and everythign works straight away!!! for those who have fumbled their way through a couple of Linux installations, you will know what i added three exclamation points to that Very Happy Musix is what i have installed now; I would have liked to keep SuSe, but Musix was just a bit more up my alley, because of all the perfectly installed and configured music stuff. Even has three different trackers! Oh, and Ardour too. And Rosegarden. And.... just more stuff than you can imagine. And it uses APT, so getting new apps should be a breeze. I haven't needed to yet Very Happy Anyway, I really hope this helps. I have had a LOT of trial and error stuff with Linux - i have never been particularly technically adept when it comes to Linux; more of a fumbling dim-wit, really Laughing So, when i found these three worked easily, with no mess, easy as Windows... well, i had to share, for the good of other hopelessly right-brained people like myself. Very Happy cheers all. Here's to eXT on GNU/Linux!!! -gabriel" -- Marcos Guglielmetti * Director del desarrollo de Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre * Descarga el CD de Musix: (www.musix.org.ar) (www.pc-musica.com.ar/musix) * Videos, programas y otras cosas en: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix/ * Reporte de errores a: https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Problemas-Bugs *IRC: #musix channel on freenode

More problems with screen
by DCZX 17 Jun '06

17 Jun '06

Well, I thought all was well with the installation of the ati drivers, however, this is not so. * Kcontrol will NOT save the settings I choose. As soon as I log out and back in, they are back to default settings. I even clicked on the "use when starting KDE" option. No luck. * Once I change resolutions, the fonts stay extremely small for some reason I don't understand. I would really like to see Musix succeed, but if users, especially non-hacker musician types can never get past these technical issues, I'm not sure how it can. More that 50% of the market is ATI, so you're looking at a wide userbase. Thanks for your help and I hope we can figure out some solutions that maybe could go in the documentation. P.S. sorry I'm not submitting through the wiki... I think it's in Spanish and I don't know how. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Success with ati drivers
by DCZX 17 Jun '06

17 Jun '06

I finally got the display working correctly! Here's what I did: 1. Downloaded newest Linux driver from ati (.run file) 2. Installed Musix 0.49 3. As root, ran installation utility. 5. As root ran: aticonfig -initial -input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf 6. Rebooted Musix. 7. On Reboot, some question in spanish about rebooting comes up. Answer "no". 8. Set refresh rates in Kcontrolpanel. 9. Make musica! =) I know the ati drivers aren't 100% gnu open source and all, but the open source drivers aren't good enough for Radeon cards until ati releases some more code. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I've downloaded 049 twice and burnt it and each time, when I try to boot it on my pc, I get an error: "checksum mismatch, rebooting, sorry." or something like that. Is there something wrong with the iso on gnu.org? thanks __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! refresh rates continued
by DCZX 13 Jun '06

13 Jun '06

Ok, so I'm using a CRT. I edited xorg.conf and got it exactly setup right. I was amazed when I rebooted and everything was back to 60hz again and 1024x768!!! I think somehow the "autoconfigurano" or autoconfiguration is resetting xorg.conf every time I boot up! Is there a way to stop this? thank you __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

refresh rates continued
by DCZX 12 Jun '06

12 Jun '06

Well, kcontrol lists my resolution at 1024x768 and my refresh at 101hz. However, the monitor reports it's at 60hz and it flickers. Strangely, there are no other refresh options in Kcontrol, it's locked at 101hz. Is something wrong? thanks __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
