Fwd: [hipatia] [#29749] new kde tablet
by Juan Carlos Gentile 05 Feb '12

This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --Boundary-00=_nIpLPttzSajlMq4 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable =2D--------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [hipatia] [#29749] new kde tablet Date: Sunday 05 February 2012, 05:50:22 =46rom: Argon <argon(a)hipatia.net> To: gnuri(a)listas.hipatia.net, hipatia(a)listas.hipatia.net, coordinadores de = Hipatia <coordinadores-hipatia(a)listas.hipatia.net> KDE developer Aaron Seigo has announced[1] a new upcoming tablet computer, called the Spark, that will ship with KDE's Plasma environment. The device, which has a seven-inch display and a 1GHz ARM CPU, will sell for =E2=82=AC200 ($262). Underneath the shiny KDE surface, t= he Spark reportedly runs Mer, a community-driven fork of the Linux-based MeeGo platform. Seigo says that the device will be open and that users will be able to install custom firmware. Although the Spark's hardware specifications aren't particularly impressive and the device is unlikely to attract a mainstream audience, it will appeal to open source software developers who want an inexpensive hardware environment for developing touchscreen-friendly applications with Qt and QML. "This is a unique opportunity for Free software. Finally we have a device coming to market on our terms. It has been designed by and is usable by us on our terms," he wrote. "We are not waiting for some big company to give us what we desire, we're going out there and making it happen together. Just as important: the proceeds will be helping fuel the efforts that make this all possible." KDE enthusiasts commenting on Seigo's blog have pointed out that the hardware appears to have been sourced from a Shenzhen manufacturer called Zenithink[2] and that it resembles one of the company's Android tablets. Fwd: [hipatia-socios] [#1525] laquadraturedunet: debunking EU lies about ACTA
by Diego Saravia 30 Jan '12

30 Jan '12

this is their analysis of the facts (pdf): http://www.laquadrature.net/files/Debunking_the_EU_Commissions_fact-sheet_o… Paris, January 30th, 2012 – The EU Commission is engaging in an all-out offensive to portray ACTA as normal trade agreement harmless to fundamental rights or access to knowledge. In several published documents, the Commission's attempts to impose ACTA onto the EU Parliament while silencing legitimate criticism. But these misrepresentations don't resist scrutiny. As EU executive branch (EU Commission plus 22 Member States governments) officially signed ACTA1, the way is now open for its consideration by the European Parliament. Its 754 elected members now have an opportunity, during a process that will last for several months, to either accept or reject ACTA. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are already under great pressure, not only from the copyright industry lobbyists, but also from the European Commission's “International Trade” directorate2, who negotiated the text in total opacity during 3 years. Citizens must contact the Members of the EU Parliament (MEPs) to denounce the Commission's infuriating lies, and urge them to ensure that the EU's democratic values will be preserved. MEPs must commit to working in their respective committees towards the rejection of ACTA. “The EU Commission is plainly lying to the Members of the European Parliament by presenting ACTA as an acceptable agreement. By signing ACTA together with EU Member States, the EU Commission dismissed the legitimate concerns of thousands of citizens across Europe who have been protesting against ACTA in the past few days. Citizens must contact their elected representatives and remind them what ACTA is all about: circumventing democracy and hurting freedoms to protect the outdated business models of rent-seeking industries.”, said Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson for La Quadrature du Net. source: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/the-eu-commissions-lies-about-acta
