Kettling Wikileaks‏
by Javier Villalba 18 Dec '10

18 Dec '10

This article is available from DefectiveByDesign at: http://www.defectivebydesign.org/wikileaks Or from the Guardian Newspaper at: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/dec/17/anonymous-wikileaks-pro… Kettling: also known as containment or corralling - a police tactic for the management of large crowds during demonstrations or protests. The Anonymous web protests over WikiLeaks are the internet equivalent of a mass demonstration. It's a mistake to call them hacking (playful cleverness) or cracking (security breaking). The LOIC program that is being used by the group is prepackaged so no cleverness is needed to run it, and it does not break any computer's security. The protesters have not tried to take control of Amazon's website, or extract any data from MasterCard. They enter through the site's front door, and it just can't cope with the volume. Calling these protests DDoS, or distributed denial of service, attacks is misleading, too. A DDoS attack is done with thousands of "zombie" computers. Typically, somebody breaks the security of those computers (often with a virus) and takes remote control of them, then rigs them up as a "botnet" to do in unison whatever he directs (in this case, to overload a server). The Anonymous protesters' computers are not zombies; presumably they are being individually operated. No – the proper comparison is with the crowds that descended last week on Topshop stores. They didn't break into the stores or take any goods from them, but they sure caused a nuisance for the owner, Philip Green. I wouldn't like it one bit if my store (supposing I had one) were the target of a large protest. Amazon and MasterCard don't like it either, and their clients were probably annoyed. Those who hoped to buy at Topshop on the day of the protest may have been annoyed too. The internet cannot function if websites are frequently blocked by crowds, just as a city cannot function if its streets are constantly full by protesters. But before you advocate a crackdown on internet protests, consider what they are protesting: on the internet, users have no rights. As the WikiLeaks case has demonstrated, what we do online, we do on sufferance. In the physical world, we have the right to print and sell books. Anyone trying to stop us would need to go to court. That right is weak in the UK (consider superinjunctions), but at least it exists. However, to set up a website we need the co-operation of a domain name company, an ISP, and often a hosting company, any of which can be pressured to cut us off. In the US, no law explicitly establishes this precarity. Rather, it is embodied in contracts that we have allowed those companies to establish as normal. It is as if we all lived in rented rooms and landlords could evict anyone at a moment's notice. Reading, too, is done on sufferance. In the physical world, you can buy a book with cash, and you own it. You are free to give, lend or sell it to someone else. You are also free to keep it. However, in the virtual world, e-readers have digital handcuffs to stop you from giving, lending or selling a book, as well as licences forbidding that. Last year, Amazon used a back door in its e-reader to remotely delete thousands of copies of 1984, by George Orwell. The Ministry of Truth has been privatised. In the physical world, we have the right to pay money and to receive money – even anonymously. On the internet, we can receive money only with the approval of organisations such as PayPal and MasterCard, and the "security state" tracks payments moment by moment. Punishment-on-accusation laws such as the Digital Economy Act extend this pattern of precarity to internet connectivity. What you do on your own computer is also controlled by others, with non-free software. Microsoft and Apple systems implement digital handcuffs – features specifically designed to restrict users. Continued use of a program or feature is precarious too: Apple put a back door in the iPhone to remotely delete installed applications and another in Windows enabled Microsoft to install software changes without asking permission. I started the free software movement to replace user-controlling non-free software with freedom-respecting free software. With free software, we can at least control what software does in our own computers. The US state today is a nexus of power for corporate interests. Since it must pretend to serve the people, it fears the truth may leak. Hence its parallel campaigns against WikiLeaks: to crush it through the precarity of the internet and to formally limit freedom of the press. States seek to imprison the Anonymous protesters rather than official torturers and murderers. The day when our governments prosecute war criminals and tell us the truth, internet crowd control may be our most pressing remaining problem. I will rejoice if I see that day. • Copyright 2010 Richard Stallman – released under the Creative Commons Attribution Noderivs Licence Support the Free Software Foundation's year end appeal: http://www.fsf.org/appeal/2010/an-appeal-from-peter-brown ------------------------------- Stop email from this list, but still allow us to contact you occasionally: unsubscribe-1-409-1028223-e37160bf77579629eebe89c1ed6a910fe89554a8(a)defectivebydesign.org. Embrace open source philosophy, Kalam tells scientists, researchers
by Javier Villalba 17 Dec '10

The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, with Free Software Movement of India president Y. Kiran Chandra (left) and senior vice-president of Mahindra Satyam, Sivananda Raja, at a national convention in Hyderabad on Thursday. Photo: G. Ramakrishna The concept of Free Software, wherein knowledge is created by the community for the community, without being driven by commercial interests, must be extended to research to solve problems in health care, agriculture, energy and safe drinking water, the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day National Convention for Academics and Research on ‘Computing freedom for technology, education and research,' organised by the Free Software Movement of India (FSMI), a national coalition of regional free software movements, on the Mahindra Satyam campus here on Thursday. Mr. Kalam implored scientists, researchers and academics to embrace the ‘open source philosophy' in their respective fields, and work towards building ‘open source networks' that can help pool talent, research and know-how from around the world. Such a platform can help evolve scientific solutions to problems, particularly those relevant to developing countries. “Why don't Free Software movements come together to create a network of experts to work on providing free drinking water,” he asked the audience. A valuable open source movement initiated in the Indian health care sector is the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD), a consortium led by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In the wake of the failure of market forces in this sector, the OSDD is exploring new models of drug discovery and looking at innovative patent regimes, Mr. Kalam said. “Market forces discourage research-based pharmaceutical companies from developing drugs for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis or malaria that predominantly affect the developing world. It would be naive to expect drug discovery for infectious diseases to become a lucrative standard business model,” he explained. So where the existing patent-driven models have failed, the OSDD provides an alternative way of looking at Intellectual Property as a tool of research. “It is currently working on optimising a patented molecule as a drug. OSDD plans to use this patent to ensure the drugs are affordable in the market, by ensuring non-exclusive licensing. This is an innovative way of using patents to the benefit of poor patients,” Mr. Kalam said. He also alluded to the success of Android, the open mobile operating system that has revolutionised mobile communication. Freedom in research West Bengal Minister for Information Technology Debesh Das emphasised on the importance of freedom and independence in research. K. Gopinath of the Indian Institute of Science spoke about why free code is critical in science, citing examples of Free Software such as Muscle and Hammer used in genetic science that have made a huge difference by allowing for collaborative research. The convention, which has over 500 professors, academics and researchers participating, hosts workshops and tutorials offering training in FOSS technologies in scientific and technological domains. It aims at creating awareness on GNU/Linux software tools used in research. Nicolás, Did you hear the shocking news? Glen Greenwald reports that U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning is being tortured. Manning is accused of leaking unflattering information about the Afghanistan war to WikiLeaks, but hasn't been convicted of -- or even tried for -- any crime. [1]Torture is outrageous and un-American! Click here to demand fair treatment of Private Manning. Manning is being held at the U.S. Marine brig in Quantico, and according to Greenwald: Manning has been subjected for many months without pause to inhumane, personality-erasing, soul-destroying, insanity-inducing conditions of isolation similar to those perfected at America's Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado: all without so much as having been convicted of anything. Will you sign on to our petition to the Secretary of the Army? [2]Click here to demand an end to Private Manning's torture and call on the Army to give him a trial or set him free. I talked with Alexandre a few months ago, and we decided to change the way Linux Libre deals with outside nonfree firmware. The current practice is to change the code to fail instead of trying to load any firmware. The change is to obfuscate the names of the firmware files in the Linux source code. That way, if a user tracks down what firmware to install and installs it under the name that the code wants, it will. But Linux Libre will still not suggest installation of the nonfree firmware file to handle a particular device. In either case, it is possible to run the nonfree software. Free software has no way to stop users from doing something, since users an change it. Alexandre, how is progress on this? -- Richard Stallman President, Free Software Foundation 51 Franklin St Boston MA 02110 USA www.fsf.org, www.gnu.org -- Diego Saravia Diego.Saravia(a)gmail.com NO FUNCIONA->dsa(a)unsa.edu.ar

Debian 6.0 Squeeze to be released with completely free Kernel(s)
by Marcos Germán Guglielmetti 16 Dec '10

16 Dec '10

Stefano Zacchiroli: squeeze your non-free firmware away via Planet Debian by Stefano Zacchiroli on 12/15/10 Debian 6.0 Squeeze to be released with completely free Kernel(s) Today we have announced that, starting with the upcoming release of Squeeze, Debian will be even Free-er. Exceptions to the DFSG for non-free Linux firmware blobs, which have been granted in the past, will no longer be granted. Starting from Squeeze, Debian will be Free the bottom up, no matter where your own definition of software ends. The news has been known for a while within the Debian development community, but we had the pleasure of sharing that with our users only today. According to the reaction on identi.ca, where the news quickly made into the most popular notices, people are enthusiastic about the news and that in turn is very rewarding. If you are as happy and proud about this achievement as I am, please direct your kudos to all the teams who made this possible: the Debian kernel team who worked for the past 2 release cycles, together with Linux upstream, to split free-vs-non-free firmware bits and monitor new releases to avoid freedom regressions; the Debian CD team who basically "forked" different media production lines, for different user needs wrt firmware; the d-i team who added, long ago, support for loading user-provided firmware at installation time; whoever else I might have forgotten who contributed to this result (feel free to leave a comment to refresh my memory!). Having been trol^W asked several times in the past about the "real freeness" of Debian at events, talks, and the like, I consider this episode to be a very nice story to tell. While we have granted exceptions for Linux firmware at the time of Etch and Lenny releases, during this time Debian people have worked, together with upstream, to make this final result possible. All this work has improved the situation not only for Debian users, but also for users of those derivatives which rely upon Debian kernels. Nonetheless, don't expect us to live under a rock. We know that there are users out there who need nasty non-free firmware bits to boot their machines or to access the Internet. That is why separate images with firmware included are being provided, although they are not part of Debian and are properly "discriminated": they should be looked for explicitly by users and can't be supported to the same extent of Free firmware, simply because we (as anybody else other than the hardware manufacturer) do not have access to the corresponding source code. This separation is a perfect example of the pragmatism embodied by the Debian Social contract: Debian consists of 100% Free software; at the same time, Debian enables its users to make their own choices in terms of Freedom, being explicit about what users risk if they cross the boundaries of DFSG. Awareness is the key here and I find it to be a very honest yet effective way of explaining to the world why Free Software is better. This is not the end of the story though, as we need to document this change properly to both increase awareness and avoid leaving users in the dark. A couple of bugs filed today might benefit from the help of some kind doc-writers: Debian bug #607191 (documenting the firmware change in the Squeeze release notes) and Debian bug #607193 (documenting the firmware change on the website). -- Marcos Guglielmetti ▲ :::::::::::::::::: M U S I X ::::::::::::::::::::: ▼ www.musix.org.ar www.ovejafm.com _______________________________________________ Para encontrarte con activistas del movimiento social del software libre envia un mail a solar.general(a)librelist.com y luego respondé el mail de bienvenida.
