Changes to Mission statement / submission guidelines
by Mathieu ONeil 21 Jul '12

21 Jul '12

Hi all Alessandro Delfanti recently commented that it was hard to figure out how to submit an article to the journal. I have attempted to fix this by modifying the mission statement / submission page. I also added a few specific guidelines that came up in the lead-up to the preparation of issues 1 and 2 concerning for example endnotes, illustrations etc. http://peerproduction.net/about/mission-statement/ I'm thinking this may not be enough and it may be better to rename that page "Submissions" or "How to submit", so that's what people see in the menu? cheers Mathieu

Re: [JoPP-Public] some bugs still present in inaugural issue
by Mathieu ONeil 21 Jul '12

Hi George, all I have fixed the broken link to the reviews, apologies that no-one else fixed it right away (I personally could not for reasons explained below). Re. formatting issues in the PDF, that is more complex; we will look into it and try to correct asap. Sorry about that also. I agree that the release process could have been smoother. There are some human and technical reasons. Briefly: - I was in hospital for surgery (if anyone wants gory details mail in private only - thx) all day Wednesday - Thursday - Friday morning which is why I am only responding now. - We sort of rushed things a little as we wanted to release fast as there is a CFP for the FLOSS issue by Maurizio and Vincenzo which is normally due at the end of this month, though of course we had delays as problems arose etc, and we wanted to release the issues before the CFP. - We are indeed releasing two issues at once (though Johan and Alessandro have decided to postpone the issue 2 official release until next Monday) which meant double amount of work fixing up a lot of very dirty code resulting from folks pasting bad docs into html, etc - We have an editors-only list which has been madly active these last few weeks; I guess there has to be a balance between spamming this general list with tech stuff that a lot of people don't care too much about and bringing in people who do want to help. I think a solution would be to cc authors or volunteers to the editors-list in the lead-up up to a release. We should have called in on this list to have a look at 1, but got "locked in" to the other list I guess. Toni P. did spontaneously alert me to couple of broken links. - Finally there is a technical issue. With the CMS we are using (Wordpress) we could not figure out a way to connect all the pages together in the right way without the site being completely "public". So you are sort of forced to have a half-finished site up in order to make sure there are no broken links etc. Something we will have to fix for the next iterations. - Finally, since you bring up the release announcement (indirectly saying it was not posted here), to be clear: since I was out of action Maurizio and Johan volunteered to look after publicity. Maurizio spammed some lists about the release (as far as I know: anthrodesign, medianthro, stsgrad , air-l, icts&society); Johan was apparently unable to do the ones he was in charge of as he was travelling; and I spammed three today (ACS, CITASA, Historical Materialism). cheers Mathieu ps. As a result of the issue 1 announcement release quite a few new people have joined this list: welcome! Sometimes it is quiet; sometimes it is not. Join in if you want to, maybe say a few words about who you are and what brought you here, if you feel like it. Inaugural issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published
by Mathieu ONeil 20 Jul '12

20 Jul '12

[Apologies for multiple posts] “Productive Negation”: the inaugural issue of the Journal of Peer Production is now published http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-1/ The Journal of Peer Production scrutinises the contradictions of peer (collaborative) production. It is thus situated in between grassroots initiatives and discussions driven by practitioners and activists and the debates taking place in academia. The inaugural issue's theme, “Productive negation”, aims to interrogate the role of peer production as a “work of the negative”, that is to say as a critical force. As the traditional left is struggling to come up with an adequate response to the mounting crisis of the capitalist system, contributors propose a range of interpretations about the relationship between the profit-oriented capitalist mode of production and the commons-based and oriented mode of peer production. The Journal of Peer Production also strives to make a small contribution to the reforming of scientific publishing. Taking a cue from Wikipedia, the journal publishes original article submissions, reviewers' reports, and signals indicating how reviewers perceive the revised article. Our ambition is to make the process of peer reviewing papers more transparent and more effective. The inaugural issue is coordinated by Mathieu O'Neil. It includes three research papers, four invited comments and three debate papers: George Dafermos, Authority in Peer Production: The Emergence of Governance in the FreeBSD Project Stefano De Paoli, Vincenzo D’Andrea and Maurizio Teli, Why Free Software Is Not the Antonym of Commercial Software: Two Case Studies from Corporate and Volunteer Based Projects Francesca Musiani, Caring About the Plumbing: On the Importance of Architectures in Social Studies of (Peer-to-Peer) Technology Michel Bauwens, From the Theory of Peer Production to the Production of Peer Production Theory Jakob Rigi, Peer to Peer Production as the Alternative to Capitalism: A New Communist Horizon Christian Siefkes, Beyond Digital Plenty: Building Blocks for Physical Peer Production Jean Zin, Changing the System of Production Stefan Meretz, Peer Production and Societal Transformation: Ten Patterns Developed by the Oekonux Project Maurizio Teli, Peer Production and Societal Transformation: A Practice-Based Perspective Toni Prug, A Note on Evaluation Processes for Social Phenomena with Ambitious Claims

some bugs still present in inaugural issue
by george dafermos 18 Jul '12

18 Jul '12

Hello everyone, i just received an email via the STSGRAD mailing list in which Maurizio announces the inaugural issue of the journal. That's great news! Many kudos to all the people who worked to make this happen and especially Matthieu for coordinating the whole thing. on the flip side, it'd have been useful if, prior to announcing the issue, we had done a little testing to make sure there are no bugs left. Shortly after I received Maurizio's message, I went to the peerproduction website to check out my paper. and i found several glitches: -the (anonymous or eponymous) reviewers' feedback is missing from the review page And the PDF file has some flaws: -fig. 2.3 in p.3 is cropped in half and therefore only half of it is visible -the text alignment is justified till fig. 1 (in p.2) and then it becomes aligned to the left. I understand that the development of the peerproduction.net website has been a work in progress and the website is constantly enriched with more content, but in the future i think we should devote at least a week to testing the website before going live on the web. Best, g.

URGENT - consent to be identified as reviewers for JoPP 01
by Mathieu ONeil 10 Jul '12

10 Jul '12

Hi all OK, there has been a lot of work behind the scenes and after a lot of delays, we are in the home stretch for the official release of JoPP 01 and 02. For JoPP 01 I am currently working on putting up the reviews for the research papers, but I don't believe I have had official consent from reviewers to name them as the authors of these reviews. So, if anyone who reviewed any of the following articles does not wish to be identified as the author please let me know offlist as soon as possible: -Authority in Peer Production: The Emergence of Governance in the FreeBSD Project by George Dafermos -Why Free Software Is Not the Antonym of Commercial Software: Two Case Studies from Corporate and Volunteer Based Projects by Stefano De Paoli, Vincenzo D’Andrea and Maurizio Teli -Caring About the Plumbing: On the Importance of Architectures in Social Studies of (Peer-to-Peer) Technology by Francesca Musiani If you are OK with being identified there is no need to write - I will assume consent and identify you. Re. signals, they are anonymous. cheers, Mathieu -- **** Dr Mathieu O'Neil Adjunct Research Fellow Australian Demographic and Social Research Institute College of Arts and Social Science The Australian National University email: mathieu.oneil[at]anu.edu.au web: http://adsri.anu.edu.au/people/visitors/mathieu.php

Hi Stefan Broken link fixed, thanks for pointing it out. The issues are still not out completely and officially, apologies for the delay. As sometimes happen Michel has acted hastily and - more problematically in this case _wrongly_ as the "new editorial" he is quoting from in his blog post is the one from JoPP 0 ie released last year as CSPP 1... cheers Mathieu On 07/03/12, Stefan Meretz <stefan(a)meretz.de> wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Hi Mathieu, > > since I did not get any response from the list since may (including my > own post), I tried to find out what's going on.
