We are finishing, these days, a manual for teachers of computer science for music schools so they can use free software and learn about sound, music, databases, web applications, openoffice, image editing, burning CDs, streaming audio. Detailed documentation will help teachers and the students too to use it properly and get really full control over their computers and operating systems.

Hola allcoms: | I read Musix is based upon stable, but stable still only has Ardour | 0.99, Rosegarden 1.4 etc and Musix has newer versions (but not the | latest Rosegarden 1.6.x btw). Yes, that's because Carlos Pino builded those packages for us, but for some versions is impossible, for instance, Kdenlive 0.5 could not be builded on Debian Stable because it's dependencies | That is an old Traverso as stable | version 0.42 is out now. I can understand you not wanting to include | cvs versions of KDEnlive or whatever though. I would like to, but I think we just cant do it; Mepis is doing something similar, basing Mepis on Debian and upgrading some packages. making "backports" | > I updated | > http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Sugerencias_de_software | | Thanks for doing that! You are welcome, and you are invited to update this and other wiki articles | Out of all those I think xdtv is the most important as it plays an | important role in Linux video- its the only good analogue video (v4l2) | capture program I know of- the only one I found that could capture | DVD-res analogue video with rt preview that WORKED. Its a shame that | its a dead program now as cinelerra and KDEnlive don't do this. Ok, it sound really good; could you register on the wiki and edit this link http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Sugerencias_de_software by adding the comment you made above? (sorry about my tired english) | I'll let you know how I go with Test 5 later! Ok, I would suggest the live-dvd by far, but the CD at least now installs on almost any machine, regards | Dan Ah, By the way, it would be better to talk using the mailing list: https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/musix-users Cheers -- `&' # Marcos Guglielmetti, co-director de # Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre para artistas _#_ http://www.musix.org.ar (#) / O \ + archivos: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix ( === ) Ecología: http://autosus.wordpress.com `---' Personal: http://marcospcmusica.wordpress.com "Sólo un hombre que se sabe libre es capaz de liberarse de la esclavitud" Espartaco http://es.wikiquote.org/wiki/Libertad

Not into the Live-DVD kernel, but yes into the _installed_ Live-DVD system. But, anyway, yo can install linux-image-2.6.23-rt1 anytime, it's easy apt-get update apt-get install linux-image-2.6.23-rt1 Next testing releases (not 1.0 ones) of Musix will have multiluns (that's what makes SD reading possible) enabled | > | Third, seeing as rox is the default desktop, I'd also like to have | > | rox used as the default file manager when I double-click 'Home' or | > | any other file links on the desktop. I'll try that in a minute. Yes, I'm a fan of rox as it even runs | and opens really fast on machines with 64MB RAM (I know from running | it on xbox and zaurus Linux), maybe even less? Fantastic... I really like it, and I have a duron 1800 , 384 RAM, I prefer rox than xfe or konqueror sometimes, to look for something faster, using markers | > | The last and biggest prob I've had with musix is I've been unable to | > | get internet working after installation although it does work when | > | run off the live CD. netcardconfig doesn't run at all and using the | > | DHCP netcard config option under Musixconfig hasn't worked either. | > | > Thats weird, really... did you tried dhcp with sudo? netcardconfig as | > root? | | Yes. I'll just have to see if I have the same problem under Test 5... maybe yes: I was experimenting ramdom behavior of dhcp... It would be easy for you to modify some startup script and add simple: dhclient If not, as root run: dhclient, or sudo dhclient as normal user. Or add sudo dhclient to ~/Autostart/start.sh echo -n "sudo dhclient&" >> ~/Autostart/start.sh | > | As I've said already, Music is the best 700MB selection of FOSS | > | software I've ever seen but it can still be made even better - fix | > | the above bugs and scrap both Soundtracker and Cheesetracker and | > | replace them with the more powerful, more portable and better looking | > | chibitracker please! | > | | > | http://chibitracker.berlios.de/ | > | > Y will add it to the pending task list, thanks | > | > http://prdownload.berlios.de/chibitracker/chibitracker-1.1.tar.gz | | Great, thanks! | | > | Traverso should also be included on Musix eventually, | > | > it's allready there | | I can't find it on test 4- you mean its in Test 5 CD or on Test 5 DVD? It's installed by default on almost any Musix version, test4 has it too: apt-cache policy traverso traverso: Installed: 0.30.0 Candidate: 0.30.0 Version table: *** 0.30.0 0 500 ftp://musix.ourproject.org ./ Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status You can use the Audio desktop, or (at icewm) press the [Windows key]+ [Space Bar] and type traverso, or open a konsole and type traverso | > | maybe after the | > | next (0.43) release | > | | > | I'm looking forward to future Musix releases - thanks for your help | > | and a great distro! | > | | > | Dan | > | > Thanks, the Live-DVD it's a good project too | | I will - I would hope to see vlc, DeVeDe, xdtv (xawdecode), winff and | maybe even KDEnlive 0.6(cvs) on the DVD- are they included? No, sorry: only VLC and kdenlive, but not this 0.6 version, 0.4 from debian multimedia (anyway, you can upgrade your hole system if you want to but): Musix 1.0 is a very stable system, not a bleeding edge one; I started the migration to debian/testing because of this, just today, to get more up to date software, debian/testing derivated versions will not be out there so soon The 1.0 age is not finished yet for us. Anyway, you can use Cinelerra if kdenlive 0.4 does not fits your needs, or you can use Kino | How about hypermammut, by the author of ZynAddSubFX Paul Nasca- it | converts pictures to sound and vice versa! I listened this name before, I will add it as the other apps you told me. For now: http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Musix1.0r3test5-announce "New packages on the Live-DVD: OpenOffice (75 languages), full KDE Desktop (63 languages), dozens of education apps (23 categories), a 75Mb Steinway Piano Soundfont, full printer and scanner support, amarok, scribus, cinelerra, kino, blender, inkscape, Linux Multimedia Studio, democracyplayer, vlc, mplayer, kdenlive, qdvdauthor, mandvd, Clam, Qcad, wengophone, a lot of games, gem, yafray, beryl, compiz, canorus, konversation, qemu, freej, konserve, lives, stellarium, nted, clamav, avscan, development packages, mozilla-firefox-locale (28 languages), manpages (23 languages), Linux 2.6.23-rt1 (when installed) and more!" * Complete package list ordered alphabetically http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Live-DVD_packages | http://sourceforge.net/projects/hypermammut | | Nice one Marcos! | | dan Cheers I updated http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Sugerencias_de_software -- `&' # Marcos Guglielmetti, co-director de # Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre para artistas _#_ http://www.musix.org.ar (#) / O \ + archivos: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix ( === ) Ecología: http://autosus.wordpress.com `---' Personal: http://marcospcmusica.wordpress.com "Nuestras clases dominantes han procurado siempre que los trabajadores no tengan historia, no tengan doctrina, no tengan héroes ni mártires. Hola ! | Hi Marcos! | | I've just had a quick go with the latest Musix and its improved a lot | since I last tried it about 6 months ago. I'd say its got the biggest | and best collection of software I've ever seen fit on 1 cdrom but its | still got a few showstopper bugs sadly :( Dont worry | Firstly, the (kanotix) installer is broke. I installed Musix to an | ext3 /dev/hda2 with the kanotix installer but it didn't configure | grubs menu.conf properly- the partition (hda2) should've been | described as hd(0,1) but Musix set it up as hd(0,0) which resulted in | no kernel being found and so no boot. It was solved: http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php/Musix1.0r3test4-announce#IDE_hds You have a patch there. Also, we are releasing test5 in a few ours http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Musix1.0r3test5-announce it has the patch, od course The problem was related to knoppix and kanotix installer, and to the rebuildfstab | Thankfully I'm a long time Linux | user and so I knew what the problem was and how to fix it but most | newbies would give up there and would be bewildered at the prospect of | fixing it. | | Secondly, I thought I read that Musix was supposed to auto-mount | drives now but I was unable to get it to even register my USB SD card | adapter / SD card. Our 2.6.21 kernel does not has support for this kind of memory cards, install the linux-image-2.6.23-rt1 | Third, seeing as rox is the default desktop, I'd also like to have rox | used as the default file manager when I double-click 'Home' or any | other file links on the desktop. How do I make rox the default file | manager? Good: I like it too :D right clic on the icon (i suppose, the Home icon), Edit element, and just put ~/ in the first field, and remove the text in the second one | | The last and biggest prob I've had with musix is I've been unable to | get internet working after installation although it does work when run | off the live CD. netcardconfig doesn't run at all and using the DHCP | netcard config option under Musixconfig hasn't worked either. Thats weird, really... did you tried dhcp with sudo? netcardconfig as root? | As I've said already, Music is the best 700MB selection of FOSS | software I've ever seen but it can still be made even better - fix the | above bugs and scrap both Soundtracker and Cheesetracker and replace | them with the more powerful, more portable and better looking | chibitracker please! | | http://chibitracker.berlios.de/ Y will add it to the pending task list, thanks http://prdownload.berlios.de/chibitracker/chibitracker-1.1.tar.gz | Traverso should also be included on Musix eventually, it's allready there | maybe after the | next (0.43) release | | I'm looking forward to future Musix releases - thanks for your help | and a great distro! | | Dan Thanks, the Live-DVD it's a good project too -- > Llegará un día en que nuestros hijos, > llenos de vergüenza, recordarán estos > días extraños en los que la honestidad > más simple era calificada de coraje. > Yevtushenko, Yevgeny

The Short Answer: I think asking a manufacturer to declare their product work with Linux would backfire, and actually lock users of a product into a specific version of a distribution on a specific hardware platform. The Long Answer: In 1978, at the age of 12 (yes I know I am old), I taught myself to program in BASIC. I used to go to the local Radio Shack store on a Saturday afternoon, and type in my programs to watch them run. It was an exciting time! In 1980, my father purchased a Radio Shack Color Computer II, at school, I learned Pascal on an Apple II. I had friends with Timex Sinclair computers, Commodor 64's and Amigas. Other companies like PET and HeathKit, had computer kits that you would assemble yourself. I remember great debates about which computer was better at what task, then the IBM PC arrived, and most everything else died. One can see Linux as the software/operating system version of what went on in the 1980's. Great debates still arise over which distribution is better for what task, and many of my favorite distributions of the past are now gone. The problem with commercial development of software, or device drivers, for Linux is the same as the software development problem in the early computer days: Which platform do we support? I remember I could get "One on One Basketball Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson" for Color Computer II, Apple II or Commodore 64, but not PET or Heathkit. The problem with developing for Linux is not just which distribution to support, but which hardware platform to support. Debian alone supports 12 hardware platforms! Some companies will support an application or device when used on specific hardware with a specific release of a specific Linux distribution. This is not an evil pracitice, this is about quality control. Some devices do not have open source Linux drivers available because agreements with sub component vendors (firmware for example) prevent them from doing so. In the present day, most computer users use Microsoft Windows. Most multi-media computer users use Apple Macintosh. Linux desktop users, although steadily growing in numbers, are a very very small percentage of all computer users. Linux multi-media users are yet an even smaller percentage. So, when a company like Behringer has USB devices that just happen to work with Linux/Alsa, I think that to be wonderful! I do not know anybody who develops products for Behringer, but Linux/Alsa usability may even be an intentional part of the developement process. But, for Behringer to officially support "Linux", the users of that product may find support limited to a specific distribution and version on a specific hardware platform. It is frustrating when something is not supported in Linux, like my combination USB PC/MIDI keyboard from Creative Labs. Also, just as frustrating is the partial support for devices in Linux, like my Korg microKnotroL keyboard. Instead of asking companies to make "Linux Friendly" devices, or asking them to officially support their devices in Linux, I think it is better to find available devices that do work with Linux and document it. This helps others make better choices and waste less money. I think if officially supporting Linux would help Behringer make more money, they would do it. I say that because Behringer does maintain a list of free software for Windows and Macintos to use with their products: http://www.behringer.com/05_support/u-control-downloads/u-control-downloads… -=Sean Edwards=- ----- Original Message ---- From: Marcos Guglielmetti <marcospcmusica(a)gmail.com> To: musix-users(a)lists.ourproject.org; Lista de usuarios de Musix <musix-usuarios(a)lists.ourproject.org> Cc: Sean Edwards <cybersean3000(a)yahoo.com> Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 9:29:45 AM Subject: Re: [Musix-users] BEHRINGER U-Control UCA202 El Jueves, 10 de Enero de 2008 06:06, Sean Edwards escribió: | I am happy to report the BEHRINGER U-Control UCA202 works with Linux/Alsa | | http://www.behringer.com/UCA202/index.cfm?lang= | | Here is the info from proc file system: | | I: Bus=0003 Vendor=08bb Product=2902 Version=0100 | N: Name="Burr-Brown from TI USB Audio CODEC " | P: Phys=usb-0000:00:1d.0-2/input3 | S: Sysfs=/class/input/input9 | U: Uniq= | H: Handlers=kbd event8 | B: EV=3 | B: KEY=e0000 0 0 0 | | -=Sean Edwards=- | One friend from the musix-usuarios (spanish lang) mailing list had a good idea: how about reporting Behringer about this?
