Re: Do I run a low-latency and realtime kernel? (new kernel)

Hi all, I just installed kernel 2.6.21-rc4 ! Indeed, now I can see FF FF in in jackd ! So my kernel had a problem. The good point is that I get no xruns any more ! But, the problem is not solved at all :-) The sound saturation is still there, it is so crap, that it is not playable. I repeat, this happens only with : midi keyboard --> midi in to freewheeling -->midi out to zynadd --> audio out back to freewheeling --> audio out to alsa_pcm I sent a msg to freewheeling mailing list, and somebody replied me it is inherent to freewheeling. It has not hard realtime capabilities. They pointed me to a new project, wich is : http://home.gna.org/zyn/ I noticed that if I keep the above described configuration, except that I don't play from my midi keyboard but from the integrated visual keyboard in zynaddsubfx, there is no sound saturation !!!!! So, it seems zynaddsubfx cannot process fast enough the midi inputs it gets from freewheeling ! Thank you guys! Good point is that I now really have a realtime kernel :-) I'll see what happens with this new project, and keep you informed. Another solution is if it is possible (I have to ask zynadd mailing list), is to say, ok..zynaddsubfx just process midi events in the note range X-->Y, and freewheeling to process midi events in the note range Y+1 --> Z. That would avoid freewheeling to filter and pass the midi events it gets to zynaddsubfx. What do you think?

Hi again, Thanks for the replies ! > I suggest to Try the 2.6.16-multimedia kernel that it's into Musix, > Also, the 2.6-16-beyond4.1 it's a realtime kernel... Ok, I'll try the multimedia one. > To try it, start jack and type into a konsole: > ps -C jackd -cmL my output is : PID LWP CLS PRI TTY TIME CMD 14745 - - - ? 00:00:00 jackd - 14745 TS 7 - 00:00:00 - - 14746 TS 34 - 00:00:00 - - 14747 TS 22 - 00:00:00 - - 14748 #4 40 - 00:00:00 - - 14749 #4 40 - 00:00:00 - So, no FF.. Does this mean no realtime kernel or no jackd realtime support? > Julien: is realtime-lsm loaded? > Type into a konsole: > lsmod | grep realtime The output from this comand is : realtime 5384 0 commoncap 6912 1 realtime Is this realtime-lsm? (When I do apt-get install realtime-lsm it says it is already installed. But do I have to turn it on? Or it is the above and is ok?) > If you want more evidences: > marcos@musix099b16:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.17-2-multimedia-486 | grep -i realtime > CONFIG_SECURITY_REALTIME=m Mine is : cat /boot/config-2.6.16-beyond4.1 |grep -i realtime CONFIG_SECURITY_REALTIME=m So it seems ok. > Julien, what could be wrong with zynaddsubfx? or does it happends with any other apps? Well, the tons of xruns and sound saturation comes only with zynaddsubfx with that SPECIFIC configuration. That is : midi keyboard -->midi input to freewheeling -->midi output to zynaddsubfx -->audio output back to freewheeling -->audio output to alsa_pcm. I don't know what is bad with that configuration. May be it is the fact that it makes a kind of loop, and so has to take too much time.. But in general, all soundfonts I use sound crap too. No saturation, but bad sound quality (for that, I don't know, may be I only have bad soundfonts) So..let's summarize. With the commands you made me run, It seems I have realtime kernel and realtime-lsm..but on the other hand, it seems jackd is not realtime..?? Is your advice still to try the 2.16-multimedia? Thanks !

Do I run a low-latency and realtime kernel?
by julien bodd 09 Apr '07

09 Apr '07

Hi all, I'm experiencing tons of xruns and sound saturation when I use zynAddSubFx in combination with freewheeling (live looper). I went through the linux-audio-users-request mailing list and I saw that a low-latency kernel is not the same with a realtime kernel. When I do : uname - a, I have : ... 2.6.16-beyond4.1 #1 PREEMPT Sun May 28 ... So my kernel is low-latency? But, it doesn't seem it is realtime as I have installed no patch (Ingo Molnar patch). It doesn't seem to be PREEMPT_RT. Or is it included in Musix by default? This might be the problem. Another thing I see is that when I run QJackCtl, it doesn't seem to run realtime! Although it does not complain and I have activated the R (realtime) switch. I can see it is not realtime because there is a RT indicator that is not yellow. I tried running as root, and it is the same. I have libpam-modules installed (0.79-4) and I added : /etc/security/limits.conf @audio - rtprio 99 @audio - nice -10 @audio - memlock 250000 (I belong to the audio group of course) (I also tried some optimizations with fluxbox, no 3D accel, disable unnecessary services, increase pci latency for soundcard..) So, I is the problem the lack of realtime patch, or a bad version of QJackCtl? Thank you very much, and sorry for this long post ! Julien

First of all, I must say Marcos has taken on a large, daunting, yet valuable project with Music. I have tried many other Music/Sound production Distro's, and Musix is the only one that really works. I continue to be amazed at Marcos can do with his Distribution. If there are any ubuntu people on this list, you may know that Ubuntu Studio is due for release this month: http://ubuntustudio.org/ I admit that I will try it, but then go back to using Musix. Ubuntu Studio have decided to use Gnome for the project desktop which will cause problems on my ancient hardware. Again, Marcos' selection of a lightweight desktop (iceWM + ROX Filer) proves he understands the scope of the project and how to reach those goals. When researching information about Ubuntu Studio and sound with Ubuntu, I came across some very useful documentation https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound. The Ubuntu Studio Preparation page has brief yet useful discussion about Kernel Preemption and XRUNS. In that discussion, there is a link to a document on compiling a Kernel with Real Time Preemption: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToVanillaKernelWithRealtimePreemption. Since Musix is based on Knoppix which is based on Debian, and Ubuntu is based on Debian, the documentation above should work. I have Debian Stable installed on a Mac G3 Blue and White, and hopefully I will have time to test the documentation. Please don't do kernel experimentation on a system with important data! I hope this helps. -=cybersean3000=- On Mon, 2007-04-09 at 06:54 -0400, julien bodd wrote: > I went through the linux-audio-users-request mailing list and I saw > that a low-latency kernel is not the same with a realtime kernel. ____________________________________________________________________________________ The fish are biting. Hi There is a new kernel 2.6.21-rc3 in the Musix's repositories, so, you can install it to test: apt-get update apt-cache search 2.6.21 * And then install: apt-get install packagename For instance: apt-get install linux-image-2.6.21-rc3 -- Marcos Guglielmetti * Director del desarrollo de Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre * CD Donwload: (http://www.musix.org.ar/en/) * Colabora: http://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php/Musix099_tasks * Videos, programas y otras cosas en: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix/ * Reporte de errores a: https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Problemas-Bugs *IRC: #musix channel on freenode * http://autosus.wordpress.com/
