greetings, thought you rdistro might be what we're looking for... we're trying to set up a website for a client they can record and upload roughly hour long audio to for streaming. we'd be interested in any ready to go solutions if anyone can recommmend any but if we need to build our own we'd prefer to use linux. what we'd need is a linux box with a really simple interface to start/stop recording, then maybe automatically trim silence off the end of the file and upload it to a web server in a format ready for streaming. any advice on ways to go about this would be greatly appreciated. what w'ed most likely do is have a web-interface for some perl scripts which would then control some command line apps. any advice greatly appreciated, rene.

installing ams from source
by Marius Stoica 26 Nov '06

26 Nov '06

Hi, I've just installed Musix a couple of days a go and I found it really cool. I think I'll leave my planned Ubuntu upgrade and get on Musix all the way, as I usually use my computer for music. I've tried already Demudi and Dynebolic but Musix just suits me almost perfect, though I have a problem... I usually use Alsa Modular Synth, but there's always seems to be a library dependency bug that affects the Spectrum View module; as I found about it on the AMS list: to fix this problem and make the Spectrum View to work, you must get the AMS source code, modify the link to the fftw library in the source files and then rebuild the app. That worked on Ubuntu, but on Musix I'm not so sure how to modify the Makefile. Is there anyone who can help me? Thx Marius

Join forces?
by Ketil Thorgersen 23 Nov '06

Hi This is possibly a very stupid mail - if so - please delete it and never think about it again! I Love musix! There is a really good menusystem and its lightweight and just configured! Thats is great! The only problem is that it doesn't work out of the box with respect to acpi functions vital to a laptop as sleep and hibernate - at least not at my laptop. Neither does the wireless card. On Ubuntu this just works perfectly, but it's it not really streamlined for audio in the same way as Musix. However that is being changed at the moment with the arrival of the ubuntu studio project (www.ubuntustudio.org) I also saw that You talked about basing future Musix versions on ubuntu so I am wondering if there is any need for this fragmentation of brilliance? Wouldn't it be perfect to cooperate on one absolutely fantastic overwhelming distro rather than making two good ones? Ah well - Just someting I thought about... Thanks a lot so far! Best regards Ketil Thorgersen

The last line allows users of this group to also use > negative nice values, which can be handy sometimes. Well, that's very nice, I will take a note. Here, my limits.conf file was modified after the upgrade, so, there is nothing like your lines there. Many months ago, I wrote something about this: @audio - rt_priority 100 @audio - nice -10 @audio - memlock 4000000 > Have fun, > Flo Thanks, see: -------------------------------------------------------------- lsmod | grep realtime (nothing!) sudo modprobe realtime gid=1002 lsmod | grep realtime realtime 5384 0 commoncap 6912 1 realtime ps -C jackd -cmL PID LWP CLS PRI TTY TIME CMD 10711 - - - ? 00:00:00 jackd - 10711 TS 19 - 00:00:00 - - 10712 TS 23 - 00:00:00 - - 10713 TS 23 - 00:00:00 - - 10714 FF 73 - 00:00:00 - - 10715 FF 63 - 00:00:00 - ------------------------------------------------------------- Now: no xruns at all! Well, that's funny: since 2 years or so, my system used to load realtime-lsm in each system boot, I dont know why after the apt-get upgrade it ceased to load it. The problem was this: ls -lah /etc/rc5.d/S15realtime lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 2006-03-16 22:49 /etc/rc5.d/S15realtime -> /etc/init.d/realtime ls /etc/init.d/realtime ls: /etc/init.d/realtime: No such file or directory So: Debian's apt-get upgrade removed this file: /etc/init.d/realtime It will be easy to fix this, and it's funny: I dont know how I didn't figured out this was the problem, cheers, -- Marcos Guglielmetti * Director del desarrollo de Musix GNU+Linux, 100% Software Libre * CD Donwload: (http://www.musix.org.ar/en/) * Videos, programas y otras cosas en: ftp://musix.ourproject.org/pub/musix/ * Reporte de errores a: https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php?title=Problemas-Bugs *IRC: #musix channel on freenode * Torrent Download: https://e.ututo.org.ar/utiles/torrent/MusixGNU-Linux0.59.iso.torrent

[BUG] USB-MIDI not working with realtime-kernels
by Jens Gulden 15 Nov '06

15 Nov '06

Hello everybody, especially Marcos, can you confirm this bug?: Realtime-patches confuse ALSA's USB-MIDI functionality. Using Musix's realtime-kernels, MIDI-events from and to USB-MIDI devices get not passed between clients when the device is connected inside ALSA's sequencer API. E.g. using "'device' -> timidity" (connected via aconnect if available, or qjackctl's midi-connections-tab), the MIDI events seem to get stuck in an internal buffer: cat /proc/asound/card2/midi0 -> MidiSport 2x2 Output 0 Tx bytes : 0 Output 1 Tx bytes : 0 Input 0 Rx bytes : 1186 Buffer size : 4096 Avail : 1186 <--- ### SHOULD BE ZERO, NOT =RX BYTES! ### Overruns : 0 Input 1 Rx bytes : 0 Instead of passing the data further to the connected timidity in this example, it remains in some kind of receive-buffer. When 4096 is reached, overruns start to count up. Connections have been set up using qjackctl, vkeybd->timidity works. When outputting MIDI-events, the same behaviour applies to an output-buffer. See also http://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/musix-users/2006-October/000366.html. However, using the "amidi" tool from the alsa-utils package (can be compiled from source on Musix), MIDI events show up correctly. The problem thus might not originate from a device-driver, but probably somewhere in ALSA's sequencer API. I'm not an ALSA expert, however. Thanks to Clemens Ladisch for the hint about amidi. Booting the non-realtime kernels of the different Musix versions, everything related to MIDI works fine. Tested Musix versions: 0.39, 0.49, 0.50, 0.59 (from cd-rom only, no hd-install). Tested USB-Hardware: - M-Audio Midisport 2x2 (on 0.49, 0.50 with added firmware) - Edirol UM-1 (no firmware needed) both devices get properly recognized by the system with both types of kernels (otherwise they couldn't get connected via the midi-connect-tab), but on realtime-kernels the above problem occurs Tested Computer-Hardware: - 800 MHz Pentium desktop-PC - 500 MHz Celeron old notebook - 1,4 GHz Pentium-M new notebook Marcos, can you please add this at https://www.musix.org.ar/drupal/?q=forum/16 if it confirms to be a bug? (I don't know if the bug list is actually in use...) Thanks for the work on Musix, Jens

Mantener a John Wimbere <cincykid1(a)yahoo.com> en CC por favor! Hola John Wimbere: > Marcos, > > I wrote to you awhile ago about a problem I had > establishing a DSL connection on an earlier version of > Musix. I wanted to let you know that I have the same > problem with 0.59. Hi, yes, now i see: "Since writing your reply, I have installed Ubuntu 6.06--another Debian derivitive--on my desktop. Again, pppoeconf worked fine, but my connection was timing out. I edited etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider, and that solves part of the problem, but I still have to frequently restart the connection with pon dsl-provider. Sometimes I have to reboot to re-establish the connection. But at least I'm able to connect with a Debian distro." Ok, your DSL works on an Ubuntu system. > To recap, the pppoeconfig happens normally, I enter > user name and password, lights flash on the modem, I > get confirmation that the connection has been > established, but Firefox cannot find any servers and > cannot open any pages. Mmm.... what does it says on /etc/resolv.conf > Was a fix ever found for this problem? NO: no other users reported such problem... maybe something related, but not this problem exactly. And I dont know too mucho about DSL (almost nothing), so I am asking another users here. Same configurations. Anyway, all ok now..except some other odd things..not related to X I think. I have some problems with fonts now. Within some apps, the caracters appear one on the other and I can't read (I noticed that with Last.fm soft until now)
