Paul: I can't get to your project homepage. http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org redirects to http://zathras.tuxcnc.org/bdi4emc which doesn't respond. I hope this is just a temporary problem. Regards, Kent

Re: Re: Updating to BDI 4.50 with Synaptic

Hello Paul: You said in your response to my question, * 3) You burnt the CD as one large file rather than as an ISO. Quite a *common *error if you used a Windows box. * It turns out that in fact that's exactly what I did. I copied the data to the CD as one large file. I wasn't aware that an ISO file is the equivalent of a zip file under Windows! Thanks for setting me straight with that. I managed to recopy the CD and I was successful with the 4.50 upgrade. I experimented with trying to get Synaptic to update my BDI installation over the internet rather than burning a CD but wasn't successful in doing so. Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to take that approach in the future? Thanks for the help, Craig

BDI-4.50 is now available for download. This build includes 665 packages drawn from Debian's stable branch along with the latest security/bug-fix releases. In addition to the official Debian packages, you will also find: EMC-1.0 - Based on the original Sourceforge code with numerous bug fixes and a couple of new drivers. emc2 - Current release.. Bug reports to http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid=106744&group_id=6744 please. 2.6.16.20 kernel patched with the RTAI realtime extensions. Madwifi & ndiswappers for WiFi cards (other drivers available with a simple command). For a complete list of packages, please visit http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org and see under "BDI-4 info". Existing BDI-4 users can use the CD to upgrade an install using Synaptic without having to format & reinstall. Regards, Paul.

Updating to BDI 4.50 with Synaptic
by Craigg Gadd 12 Aug '06

12 Aug '06

Hello Paul: I'm trying to update BDI 4.38 to the 4.50 version and am having difficulty. I'm attempting to avoid the format and reinstall method since its time consuming and am trying Synaptic. Being completely unfamiliar with Linux (but willing to learn) I've done the following: 1. Burn the .iso image with BDI 4.50. 2. Launched Synaptic on my linux system. 3. Synaptic prompts me for a root password which allows me to log in. 4. I think what I want to do next is to use the "Edit" pull down menu and "Add CD-ROM". When I do this however I get an error message that says: "E: Unable to locate any package files. Perhaps this is not an APT enabled disc". The CD-Rom seems to be accessed while this happens so I think my hardware is functioning as it should. I'm wondering if I am doing something fundamentally incorrect or I perhaps have the wrong file burned to allow Synaptic to upgrade. Any ideas? Thanks, Craig

Fw: Copatability of BDI 4.xx and emachine
by Beau Beaufait 28 Jun '06

28 Jun '06

Office Depot has an e-machine AMD Sempron 3100+ with 512MB mem for a very attractive price. Thought it might be a good deal to upgrade my EMC BDI 4.3 and PPMC to a little more giddi-up. Was considering a duel boot with window XP to use in the shop for some other applications I have when I wasn't milling. Question is before I go drop some coin on this rig, is there any known problems with this set up, and/or any recommendations or cautions I should know about. Anyone actually run emc on this machine? Thanks, Beau

Maybe. I can't really make any sense of your pinout. Try QS_PINOUT=0x67452301 Note that EMC won't modulate those enable pins, so if you if you need them at particular levels, you'll have to accomplish that through other means. -- Matt

Seeking AXIS maintainer for bdi4
by Jeff Epler 21 Jun '06

21 Jun '06

This morning, the only machine with bdi4 I had access to died. So I'm looking for someone who is a committed user of AXIS on bdi's version of emc, who will make sure that new versions of each package continue to work well together. In-depth nowledge of Python is not necessary, but you will have to be able to rebuild AXIS on bdi4, which is documented here: http://ourproject.org/moin/Rebuilding_python-axis_package Building CVS versions should work similarly, except you'll need to replace the CVS debian/ directory with the one from the bdi4 version of the python-axis source. Feel free to reply on the list <bdi4emc-help(a)lists.ourproject.org>, or directly to me <jepler(a)unpythonic.net>. Jeff
