sudo
by David Szakovits 27 Sep '08

hi paul, i have been running the emc-1.01 version. when i execute the ".run" file, i am prompted for the sudo password and at if i run the machine for a little while, i am also prompted when i exit. .the old bdi system never prompted me for sudo passwords and i would like this new system to work the same way, but i would prefer not to run as root. do you know the fix? i did compile the system as root if that makes any difference. also many thanks for previous help. djs

quickstep
by David Szakovits 22 Sep '08

22 Sep '08

hi paul, i had trouble compiling in the drivers/vital directory, but i felt i could safely comment this out and so i did. when i did "make modules_install" at one point Makefile tried to include /Makefile.inc, i presume because somehow $(PWD) became undefined. i hard coded the path into Makefile and with these changes it looked like everything went ok but with so many warnings concerning deprecated char** strings, i could easily missed an error or two. perhaps the compile did go successfully since often Make stops with an actual error. when i tried to run my old script from my bdi-4.51 system "x3.run", these are the results. i presume you expected some problems along these lines. inivar = plat/nonrealtime/bin/inivar INIFILE = x3.ini RS274NGC_PARAMFILE = generic.var starting emc... MODULE_PARM
by David Szakovits 20 Sep '08

20 Sep '08

paul, i am attempting to build emc-1.0 from the source file found on the bdi-4.51 cd. i have kernel i am having trouble satisfying the compiler with the MODULE_PARM macro in emcmodule.c. when i use uname -r it shows 2.6.24-16-rtai if that helps. i have hunted around a bit and found some apparent similar macros like RTAI_MODULE_PARM and "module_parm" but these do not appear direct replacements and i am not sure how to proceed. could you point me in the right direction? djs

hard drive crash
by David Szakovits 13 May '08

13 May '08

hi, i was running bdi 4.51 but had a hard drive crash. fsck seems to have endless errors. so looks like i have to reload the os. the mill was doing everything i need it to so it makes sense just to return it that configuration and avoid any experimentation. but i am wondering if i can run emc under a recent release of ubuntu rather than load bdi4emc onto a new disk. djs

max pulse rate
by David Szakovits 06 Jan '08

06 Jan '08

i am configuring a system with emc2/ubuntu. when axis comes up it complains that the max pulse rate is 10111 hz. when i reduce max velocity to stay within this constraints my turntable is rotating fairly slowly. my mill is using bd1-4.51 and quickstep and appears to be capable of quite a bit higher pulse rate. does anyone know if this is true or should i look for some errors on my part in the configuration files for emc2. is it straightforward to run emc on a emc2 machine? djs

Please, don't type everything in capitals... Yes, EMC can be used as a full closed loop system with suitable encoders and interface card - The motors can be either DC servos or stepper motors, although to run closed loop with steppers, you would need to make a few small changes to the code (which is readily available). Depending on the interface cards used, you can run up to six axis of simultaneous coordinated motion. If you have any further specific questions, do not hesitate to ask. If I get a chance, I'll pop the latest BDI-4 disk in the post to you - It will include a build of emc2 (2.0.4 if I recall).. If you really want to control a mill/lathe with M$ XP, then about the most cost effective solution would be Mach3 (as long as it is stepper motors you are driving) - Neither emc2 or EMC1 will run under Windows... From what I've seen from demonstrations, Mach3 knocks the socks of emc2.
