Since I'm a chronic nit-picker, how about embedding the md5 checksums somewhere on your webpages? That way I'll have increased confidence that the file I downloaded is not only a valid copy of what's on the server but also less likely to have been hacked by a third party? Have you given any thought to using the torrent? I'd think it would lessen the server loading when there is a new release. For example, now that I've downloaded BDI-4.40, I could be seeding the torrent with it, just as I am with the Fedora Core 5 image built in VMWare by thoughtpolice. Regards, Kent

Despite several new packages being added, the latest CD is some 35Megs smaller. All going well, it should be up on the servers sometime tonight. Regards, Paul.

Paul, Thanks for the help. The motherboard is an Intel N440BX, it does have an onboard video card which I think is a Cirrus 4680? The processor is 600Mhz P3 and I have 256Mb of ram I increased the period to .00005 and was able to run the default generic.ini file, so I was quite pleased with the progress. When I set the period back to .000022 I froze again so that appears to be the problem. One thing I thought was interesting is that I had installed a vital systems servo card (the 4-Axis version) and using the vital.ini, I was able to run with the period set to .000022 without any problems. I guess this has something to do with the way the card is managing certain processes that would normally be handled by the motherboard? Anyway,I'm off to hook up some motors to see if I can make something move. I'll report back. Thanks Again, Craig ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2006 21:15:09 +0100 From: Paul <bdi4emc(a)bulldoghome.com> Subject: Re: [Bdi4emc-help] RE: Bdi4emc-help Digest, Vol 5, Issue 1 To: bdi4emc-help(a)lists.ourproject.org Message-ID: <200604022115.09709.bdi4emc(a)bulldoghome.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi Craig On Sunday 02 April 2006 19:38, Craigg Gadd wrote: > I'm very new to Linux but managed to successfully install BDI 4.38 a few > days ago. This sounds very much like PERIOD being set too low for your computer. This parameter is defined in /usr/local/emc/emc.ini, or generic.ini, depending on which run script you use.. The value is set at a fairly conservative 0.000025 and should work with most 400MHz and faster computers. Even a P266 will run, but performance would be quite sluggish... There are one or two motherboards out there that just can not provide adequate performance due to inherant design problems - Generally, anything that uses shared main memory for onboard video, certain i845/855 chipsets, and Geode processors all have "issues". You could try increasing PERIOD to 0.00005 and see if avoids the freezing. Some additional information about your computer (make/model of motherboard, graphics card, etc) would help.. Hello All, I'm very new to Linux but managed to successfully install BDI 4.38 a few days ago. I seem to be having trouble launching EMC however. The problem is that the system hangs when TK starts to load. I'm saying this based on what I'm reading on the script window as EMC is loading. Once the system is hung, I'm unable to recover and must reboot. I'll mention that I don't seem to be having any other problems with the installed applications so I believe the problem relates to EMC and Tk. Any help would be appreciated. Craig

Re: [Emc-users] New BDI-4 packages.
by Jeff Epler 31 Mar '06

Paul, Each time you change your kernel version, you have to change the files debian/control, debian/rules and debian/emc2.files to reflect the kernel version. You did this once to change it from the original to 2.6.12.6-rtai, so I don't understand why you didn't simply change it again for 2.6.16. If you wanted to create a good experience for your users, you should publish a package based on the files tagged TESTING, not the HEAD version of a particular day. This is what Chris does when he builds the debian packages for Ubuntu. Until Paul has straightened this out, I recommend following the instructions on the emc wiki to build emc2 TESTING on bdi4 machines. http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?BDI-4_38_Compile_EMC2 http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Testing If you run into problems because of Paul's kernel upgrade, please let me know; if you can update the instructions on the wiki, even better. Jeff PS If you have patches or advice about how the emc2 debian/ directory can be enhanced so it does not hard-code kernel version numbers, please let the emc2 developers know. I'd be pleased to incorporate any patches that improve the packaging of emc2 into .debs.

New BDI-4 packages.
by Paul 29 Mar '06

29 Mar '06

Add the following repository to your apt sources list: deb http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org/debian/ sarge extras non-free deb-src http://bdi4emc.ourproject.org/debian/ sarge extras non-free New packages available include a 2.6.16 kernel complete with the current RTAI patch applied. New emc-modules, rtai-modules, madwifi-ng modules, plus the usual headers packages for the 2.6.16 kernel. Also available for testing is a build from today's CVS of emc2. Note: Due to the broken debian rules, it will only run with a 2.6.12.6-rtai kernel. - Bug reports to the usual place. Subject to feedback, these packages are candidates for the BDI-4.40 release due out next month. Regards, Paul.

BDI 4.38 won't run
by Shon Shampain 27 Mar '06

27 Mar '06

I have installed BDI 4.38 on a fresh partition and booted into it... when I run EMC, I see... > Starting EMC MOTION PROGRAM -- freqmod... > modinfo: freqmod: no module by that name found I see /lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/extra/freqmod.ko ... so I suppose its some kind of config issue. Can anyone help?

AXIS 1.2 source release
by Jeff Epler 20 Mar '06

20 Mar '06

AXIS 1.2 has been released. More details (including source tarballs and a changelog) here: http://axis.unpy.net/index.cgi/downloads/01142862593 Future AXIS 1.1.x releases are unlikely. AXIS 1.2.x releases will incorporate bugfixes and translation updates only, not new features. There's no schedule or feature list for "AXIS 1.3", but I've mentioned a few details about the features in the CVS version here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9931180&forum_id=331… If you're a developer of emc1 or bdi4emc, and you care about continued support by AXIS for your version of emc, please let us know about any problems building or running the development snapshots. Chris and I are both using EMC2 on Ubuntu almost exclusively, so we depend more than ever on community feedback about how our software works on other versions of emc and other Linux distributions. AXIS development snapshots: http://axis.unpy.net/downloads/nightly AXIS anonymous CVS access: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=9931268&forum_id=6435 Jeff
