He also said a civil disobedience campaign should follow if elections aren't free and fair.Pahlavi says "we are challenging the regime."Iran's 2009 presidential vote led to major protests that were brutally repressed. March 8, 2012: Florida Gov. Rick Scott delivers his state of the state speech to the Florida legislature in Tallahassee.APTALLAHASSEE, Fla. Gov. Rick Scott vetoed a bill late Wednesday that would have ended permanent alimony in Florida.Scott vetoed the measure (SB 718) just four hours before the midnight deadline to approve or veto it. The bill automatically would have become law if Scott had done nothing by then.If it had become law, Florida would have become the fifth state to abolish permanent alimony. In a letter to Senate President Don Gaetz, Scott commended bill sponsors Ritch Workman in the House and Kelli Stargel in the Senate -- both Republicans -- and said there are "several forward looking elements of this bill."But alimony "represents an important remedy for our judiciary to use in providing support to families as they adjust to changes in life circumstances," Scott wrote. "As a husband, father and grandfather, I understand the vital importance of family."Scott could not "support this legislation because it applies retroactively and thus tampers with the settled economic expectations of many Floridians who have experienced divorce," he wrote. "The retroactive adjustment of alimony could result in unfair, unanticipated results."Florida law "already provides for the adjustment of alimony under the proper circumstances," Scott wrote. "The law also ensures that spouses who have sacrificed their careers to raise a family do not s

Instead they prefer to coalesce around consensus issues like border security, temporary workers and workplace enforcement. But if the Senate's comprehensive approach faces obstacles in the House, the House's piecemeal approach won't fly in the Senate. Two of the lead authors of the Senate bill, Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and John McCain, R-Ariz., rejected the piece-by-piece approach at a breakfast meeting with reporters Thursday hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. Schumer and McCain said that any time an immigration issue is advanced individually, even something widely supported like visas for high-tech workers or a citizenship path for those brought as children, lawmakers and interest groups start pushing for other issues to get dealt with at the same time."What we have found is, ironically, it may be a little counterintuitive, that the best way to pass immigration legislation is actually a comprehensive bill, because that can achieve more balance and everybody can get much but not all of what they want," Schumer said. "And so I think the idea of doing separate bills is just not going to work. It's not worked in the past, and it's not going to work in the future."The House has always loomed as the toughest barrier to passage of immigration legislation, partly because many rank-and-file House Republicans don't feel a political imperative to act. We joke around, talk about our families, and then the inevitable happens. What do you do for a living? When I answer this question, I typically get one of two responses. I either get an onslaught of Christianese phrases -- Oh, praise the Lord! What a blessing, brother Craig! or I get stonewalled, and the conversation dies as quickly as it started. One time when this happened, the person I was talking with politely shared that he didnt like religious people. I chimed in that I didnt like religious people either. His mouth nearly dropped to the floor. I explained that religion is about rules, but being a Christian is about relationship. Now Im not saying is that religious organizations are useless. Obviously, Im a part of one. I am the pastor of a church and truly believe what Bill Hybels asserts: The local church is the hope of the world. But in order to reach the current generation and generations to come, we must change the way we do things. Thats why we like to say, To reach people no one is reaching, we have to do things no one is doing. As churches, we dont have the liberty to change the message, but we must change the way the message is presented. We have to discover our "altar ego"and become who God says we are instead of who others say we are.Peeling off the labels that cling to our reputation brings great freedom for us as individuals and a April 6, 2013: This image shows Afghan National Army soldiers rushing to the scene moments after a car bomb exploded in front the PRT, Provincial Reconstruction Team, in Qalat, Zabul province, southern Afghanistan.APISTANBUL U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry mourned on Sunday the first death of an American diplomat on the job since last year's Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic installation in Benghazi, Libya.Speaking to U.S. consulate workers on a visit to Istanbul, Kerry called the death of Anne Smedinghoff a "grim reminder" of the danger facing American foreign service workers serving overseas. The Illinois native was one of six Americans killed in an attack Saturday in Afghanistan. She was on a mission to donate books to students in the south of the country."It's a grim reminder to all of us... of how important, but also how risky, carrying the future is," Kerry told employees in the Turkish commercial capital."Folks who want to kill people, and that's all they want to do, are scared of knowledge. They want to shut the doors and they don't want people to make their choices about the future. For them, it's you do things our way, or we throw acid in your face or we put a bullet in your face," he said.Kerry described Smedinghoff as "vivacious, smart, capable, chosen often by the ambassador there to be the lead person because of her capacity."She aided Kerry when he visited the country two weeks ago, serving as his control offic
