Ok, the best way is go for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, edit it and change the 
default resolution, as instance:

Well, what apps have tiny fonts?

Kcontrol only works for KDE apps, like konqueror, rosegarden.

GTK-switch 1 & 2 works for GTK apps, like Audacity, rox (it has it own config 
too), and other GTK apps.

As instance, Kcontrol will not work for Ardour (it is GTK1 and it has its own 
config!)

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf , and it must be like this:
