We hadn't been here for dinner in ages, so on a Thursday night, after picking up my husband at Logan we stopped for dinner. The place was virtually empty which was shocking. I started with a glass of the Sparkling Rose which was wonderful, my Husband had a Kronenborg Lager. Since we were starving, we proceeded to order way too much food. I started with the Beet goat cheese salad, which was wonderful. Both red and golden beets and lots of goat cheese. My Husband had the lobster leek crepe, which was not only tasty, but beautiful. We then split the Lamb Tangine special. Wow, amazing. It came with a slice of roasted apple, and couscous seasoned with some type of morrocan spicing. The lamb was falling off the bone and so moist. After dinner, my husband had a glass of the VSOP Calvados. He raved about it. Why had we waited so long to return, I don't know, but we won't make that mistake again. The drinks were good and our server although very busy always found time for us. The bread was cold and hard which was a disappointment. We started off with the oysters which were fresh I had the pork chop which was a bit overcooked even though I asked for it medium. My wife got the duck confit which she said was very good. We got the creme brulee for dessert which wasn't very good. I went here with a big group recently. The food was great, but the service was inattentive (considering we collectively spent a lot of money). We were constantly flagging down our server. And several things we ordered never arrived. That's not a big deal when you're out with your friends, but if you're dining with a potential client, it's awkward. Les Zyg started out as a wine bar, and in the very beginning they did showcase unusual imports at reasonable prices. That was more than a decade ago. For years the regular wine list has carried nothing but 2 Buck Chuck level wines from inferior negociants, ridiculously, almost criminally, over priced. The higher priced 'cellar' list carries humdrum, ordinary wines from domestic and French sources, also, but not as flagrantly, overpriced. Case in point and what finally sent me to the computer to write this review: the other night I stopped in and was surprised when the former wine bar didn't have a single patron drinking, well, wine. Rather than take the warning, I perused the list, saw only the usual cheap crap at inflated prices and chose accordingly. I picked a Rhone which as a lower priced region in general I figured was a safer bet than the choices from Bordeaux or Burgundy, which were all really substandard names.
The wine had a good enough nose so I was hopeful, but the mid palate and finish were unpleasantly vegetal and herbal, the mark of a cheap red where the stem and leaves wind up in the must. To confirm my suspicion I looked up the house and found that I had just paid $9 for a glass of wine from a bottle that RETAILED at a whopping $5 !!!! Enuf said. Buyer beware and stick to the martinis.
