I occasionally ponder cooking, recognizing that when leftovers exist or meals are barely sampled, I question if my efforts truly pleased others. Even without their explicit remarks, it stays in my mind. Likewise, if served a meal that doesn’t match my tastes, I generally avoid critique—understanding the effort placed into its creation. Out of courtesy, I choose not to vocalize displeasure, knowing how intimate these endeavors can seem. Many individuals possess varying abilities in the kitchen, and I have known some who faced considerable challenges with fundamental dishes. For instance, there was an individual once known—sadly departed—who repeatedly overcooked pasta, creating textures so soft chewing became redundant, or roasted chicken to the point that it became difficult to enjoy. Her cabbage would dissolve in liquid, her rice clumped, and though nobody wished to comment, the sentiment was evident. Those I care for now, when faced with cooking challenges, simply ask for assistance or guidance. Among friends, we share tasks openly so that dining becomes enjoyable for all. If ever asked candidly about a dish’s quality by someone less familiar, I might offer gentle insights or quietly leave food on my plate untouched as a subtle cue. At upscale venues or eateries, if prompted, I offer polite, constructive insights. For everyone's benefit—and the passion accompanying good cuisine—honesty is always best conveyed with gentleness and mindfulness wherever feasible, particularly when we know someone has invested energy and heart into each meal. Life’s table is full of lessons, and sharing them tactfully is always a wise step from one friend or guest to another, in any environment.
