Thanks for the input, and keep it coming. I think we won't be going ahead with this proposed gathering for now as folk evidently still rather busy in October. Perhaps it'll be possible to do something further into the winter once the soil is sleeping, and this will probably need to be a day thing unless someone has access to a warm place where a number of people can kip without incurring great expense. Somewhere more central too would be good, or perhaps one in the south, another in the north... I did put a proposal in for a session at the Food Sovereignty gathering, so that may be an option for some of you more northernly folk and meanwhile the setting up of webinars is very gradually happening, at the rate at which we have any free time to work on it, which is not a lot in my case. I'm also looking into how to get funding for said work, as there's a lot I'd like to do but can't as I have to worry about money and suchlike. Let me know if you have any ideas on that one! Hi Adam and Darren
Would really like to be involved in a gathering but I'm up in Glasgow and have very few free weekends. Lots of great stuff seems to be going on but often too far away for me. I'd like to build the soil hack network a bit more in the north. Is anyone on this list in Scotland or the North of England?
I'm part of a art and design co-op called Open Jar Collective, and also plant community orchards in my other job with the Urban Orchard Project.
I'd be keen to host a Soil Hack event in Glasgow next year. Open Jar Collective have got some funding to do a public art project in Glasgow to reconnect people with soil. It will launch in April, more details to follow. If anyone is near(ish) to Glasgow give me a shout so we could hook up for a chat. I also travel down to Manchester quite frequently with my orchard job.
Cheers
Clem

Hi Adam and Darren I think a gathering with practical things to do sounds great and so far I'm free on the weekend you suggested- have been in Poland for the last three weeks and am on way home, will work out what's happening and let you know. Have you had many people interested yet? All the best for now X Annkatrin

Dear Adam
Your latest email has made me feel guilty enough to respond. Even though I read them with interest and support the cause I think I should bow out of your mailing list as it is just one too many groups. I will continue to support the soil and all it produces as s smallholder and as an active member of other groups.
All the best and good luck

So, any more takers?
If not, please let us know why not - whether you are interested in having real life gatherings, and if so, what setting would suit you better, etc.
If we are to grow as a community we need your input...
In other news, we are inching closer towards having the technical capacity to put on webinars.
Thanks,
Adam

There has been a steady stream of people signing up to this mail list and it feels like time to take things forward.
Something we have been talking about since the beginnings of the SoilHack idea is to have gatherings where soil geeks and the soil curious can get together to talk and learn about soil. A day goes quickly and limits time for interactions where as a weekend gives a bit more time for things to happen so we were thinking about a camp.
SoilHack was formed around the idea of open collaboration and it would be good to let this guide the organisation of such a gathering.
It would be nice if we could keep financial and organisational overheads to a minimum by -
- trying to organise something before it gets too cold for people to camp - asking people to bring food to share / collaborating with food preparation (this can be a good time to chat) - asking people to bring stuff to talk about (do workshops, skill shares etc.) There would definitely be some biochar, soil microscopy and aerated compost tea stuff going on.
A big part of it would be to get people together to spark conversations around soil, the work and research we are doing, and letting stuff grow out of these interactions. Also to see what ideas/energy people have for taking SoilHack forward.
Interested in hearing from anyone interested in participating in such a gathering.
We have kindly been offered the option to use the Brook End LAND Centre near Street/Glastonbury, Somerset (1hour south of Bristol) on the 9th - 11th October if we gave a donation towards expenses (firewood etc.) there is a hall / classroom with a woodstove and lots of outdoor space.
There would be a limit of 25 participants, and along with camping, space to sleep in the hall or local B&Bs.

I would love to come and would be happy to be given the oportunity to do some kind of workshop/presentation on soil carbon or on bringing biochar stoves into agroecological systems. Best wishes, Ed
