There has been a steady stream of people signing up to this mail list and it feels like time to take things forward. Something we have been talking about since the beginnings of the SoilHack idea is to have gatherings where soil geeks and the soil curious can get together to talk and learn about soil. A day goes quickly and limits time for interactions where as a weekend gives a bit more time for things to happen so we were thinking about a camp. SoilHack was formed around the idea of open collaboration and it would be good to let this guide the organisation of such a gathering. It would be nice if we could keep financial and organisational overheads to a minimum by - - trying to organise something before it gets too cold for people to camp - asking people to bring food to share / collaborating with food preparation (this can be a good time to chat) - asking people to bring stuff to talk about (do workshops, skill shares etc.) There would definitely be some biochar, soil microscopy and aerated compost tea stuff going on. A big part of it would be to get people together to spark conversations around soil, the work and research we are doing, and letting stuff grow out of these interactions. Also to see what ideas/energy people have for taking SoilHack forward. Interested in hearing from anyone interested in participating in such a gathering. We have kindly been offered the option to use the Brook End LAND Centre near Street/Glastonbury, Somerset (1hour south of Bristol) on the 9th - 11th October if we gave a donation towards expenses (firewood etc.) there is a hall / classroom with a woodstove and lots of outdoor space. There would be a limit of 25 participants, and along with camping, space to sleep in the hall or local B&Bs.
I would love to come to an event like this. However I am currently organising the IPC Conference so no chance before October, and realistically it would need to be more 'oop north' for me to get there anyway. So maybe next year? I would be happy to present and /or teach our 'Simple Soil Tests' which anyone can use to measure the quality of their soil. Best wishes, Chris On 12/08/15 17:17, Darren wrote:

Hi Adam, I'm afraid I can't make it. What with the Food Sov gathering and a family visit I've got to be away quite a bit in October, so need to focus my energies a bit here. It's great that you're trying to progress it, but somehow there are rather a lot of things going on all of a sudden, so don't be disheartened if now isn't the time. Keep up the good work. A day goes quickly and limits time for interactions where as a weekend gives a bit more time for things to happen so we were thinking about a camp.
SoilHack was formed around the idea of open collaboration and it would be good to let this guide the organisation of such a gathering.
It would be nice if we could keep financial and organisational overheads to a minimum by -
- trying to organise something before it gets too cold for people to camp - asking people to bring food to share / collaborating with food preparation (this can be a good time to chat) - asking people to bring stuff to talk about (do workshops, skill shares etc.) There would definitely be some biochar, soil microscopy and aerated compost tea stuff going on.

Hi Adam, Yes, I would love to come, and may [proudly] bring my new 5m/15ft YURT for a sharing space. I have put the date in my diary. Meanwhile the BDLT are going ahead with land purchase at Hammonds Farm, south of Hawkwood College & want to set up projects….. Such a strategic site; such possibilities. Need more knowledge and skill. Josie x On 20 Aug 2015, at 15:04, Rebecca Laughton wrote:
Hi Adam,
I'm afraid I can't make it.

I can't make that date either and unfortunately, I don't have many free weekends. Perhaps a event tagged on to a conference like Real Organic Farming Conference might work. Hi Adam and Darren Would really like to be involved in a gathering but I'm up in Glasgow and have very few free weekends. Lots of great stuff seems to be going on but often too far away for me. I'd like to build the soil hack network a bit more in the north. Is anyone on this list in Scotland or the North of England? I'm part of a art and design co-op called Open Jar Collective, and also plant community orchards in my other job with the Urban Orchard Project. I'd be keen to host a Soil Hack event in Glasgow next year. Open Jar Collective have got some funding to do a public art project in Glasgow to reconnect people with soil. It will launch in April, more details to follow. If anyone is near(ish) to Glasgow give me a shout so we could hook up for a chat. I also travel down to Manchester quite frequently with my orchard job. Thanks for the input, and keep it coming. I think we won't be going ahead with this proposed gathering for now as folk evidently still rather busy in October. Perhaps it'll be possible to do something further into the winter once the soil is sleeping, and this will probably need to be a day thing unless someone has access to a warm place where a number of people can kip without incurring great expense. Somewhere more central too would be good, or perhaps one in the south, another in the north... I did put a proposal in for a session at the Food Sovereignty gathering, so that may be an option for some of you more northernly folk and meanwhile the setting up of webinars is very gradually happening, at the rate at which we have any free time to work on it, which is not a lot in my case. I'm also looking into how to get funding for said work, as there's a lot I'd like to do but can't as I have to worry about money and suchlike. Let me know if you have any ideas on that one! I'm also looking into how to get funding for said work, as there's a lot I'd like to do but can't as I have to worry about money and suchlike. Let me know if you have any ideas on that one!

Unfortunately there is no way I could manage this gathering as it is on the first weekend of the school holidays. I would be more likely to attend meetings held further North, as this location would add two full days travelling onto the time of the meeting itself. I am sure it will go well, and look forward to hearing about any future events. Susan Davidson Sent from my iPad

Hiya, I would love to attend an event like this and Glastonbury is very nearby our farm so the venue works well for me (I know that’s not the case for others!) I can’t guarantee I’ll be available for the whole weekend as there is so much pressing work to get done, but I could definitely do one day. If there aren’t many people able to attend perhaps it would be worth getting a date further ahead, for 2016? Well done and thanks for all your efforts getting something happening. Hi Adam, Thanks for putting this out there. It seems there's an overwhelmingly positive response even if the timings not right for many. I may be able to come down from Bristol for the day. Are you still planning something or will you postpone it? Maddy --- The Blue Finger Alliance www.bluefingeralliance.org.uk www.bluefingerfood.wordpress.com @bluefingersoil The Blue Finger Alliance is working towards getting land for local food growing enterprises recognised and protected in planning policy. It is starting this campaign focussing on the Blue Finger, a strip of incredible, top quality soil in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire which is vulnerable to development. This development would damage soil and biodiversity integrity and compromise our ability to create and sustain a thriving local food system. Healthy food starts with healthy soil. Please join this movement! On 19-08-2015 23:54, Adam Ormes Court wrote:
