It all began after President Daniel Noboa announced an increase in diesel prices. Since then, hundreds of people have taken to the streets, to the plazas, to their territories — to protest a subsidy cut that affects us all. The strike was called by CONAIE (the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador), and what began as a legitimate demand has become a collective cry. I have gone out to protest. I have seen mothers, children, and elders. I have felt the strength of the people from the countryside — Indigenous peoples, those impoverished by a system that seeks to crush them — yet when a collective call for dignity is heard, they rise up and put their bodies on the line to defend Sumak Kawsay, the right to live well. Every protest has been met with repression: police and military attack without distinction.
From the government’s official discourse — or that of its spokesperson — they insist on calling those who protest terrorists. They repress us even while disguised as “humanitarian aid”: entering cities like Otavalo, where the “help” they bring is tear gas, beatings, fear, arrests, and bullets.
The Noboa government believes it can disguise its repression as “security measures,” deploying tanks, police, and soldiers. It believes it can imprison people and then accuse them of terrorism to criminalize social protest. But no threat can silence a movement whose resistance is legitimate. Protesting is not terrorism — it is the exercise of a deep, historical right, woven by the Indigenous nationalities of this land. Yesterday, I spoke with a friend who is in the middle of the protests in Imbabura. She told me she cannot sleep because of the clashes, that the bombs never stop, that the air has become unbreathable, that supplies are running out. Listening to her fills me with helplessness, fear, and the certainty that — from wherever we are — we must keep speaking about this. This has to stop. In Otavalo, an Indigenous city, acts have occurred that go beyond any logic of confrontation and are profoundly racist: last week, the braids of two young Kichwa men were cut off. In the Kichwa cosmovision, hair is not an ornament; it is a bridge to the ancestors, a thread connecting heaven and earth. Cutting it is desecration — an intimate violence, a direct aggression against the identity of our Indigenous nationalities. I write this from Quito, trying to hold with words what others hold with their bodies in the streets. What can we do when power responds with tanks and lies? Keep making noise. Let the world listen. Let international media know what is happening here. Let the collective dignity that sustains us not be extinguished by fear. If you have contacts with media outside Ecuador, please share this. If you know of actions that can help stop this, let us know. We need this regime to respect the lives of the people who inhabit these territories. A big, collective hug — with the strength of our peoples rising from the Andes. At. Yo he salido a manifestar. He visto madres, niños, ancianos.
