Paul, Thank you for the report (http://ourproject.org/moin/Package_list) that the CVS version of axis did not build against your version of emc. This is now fixed. I have just checked in a change to the AXIS CVS, and verified that it built against the source obtained by apt-get update; apt-get source emc (apt reports emc version 1.0-39) This patch is in the axis-latest tarball, and will be in the -20060222 tarball when it is created in a few hours. The stable version of axis, 1.1.2, also builds cleanly against emc 1.0-39. No changes to it were necessary. Depending on the needs of your users, you may prefer to package 1.1.x until 1.2 is stable. (for bdi4emc users there are no important differences between 1.1.1 and 1.1.2) In the future, please feel free to contact me directly or on this mailing list if you discover build problems or other bugs in AXIS. Though the development of AXIS mostly takes place on emc2 now, I am committed to keeping support for building on bdi4emc. Jeff Epler [email protected] http://axis.unpythonic.net/

Noted. Updated the list to reflect the prospect of a successfull build prior to the release of BDI-4.40. Subject to constraints on space, a few packages have been added to the list - Notably madwifi-ng, which will pull in the kernel modules, wireless-tools and dev packages. Requests for additional packages not currently on the list are welcome, and if space can be found, they stand a good chance of being included. The target date for the release of BDI-4.40 is early to mid April.. i would like to see both emc2 and axis included, and with source that will build sucessfully!
Though you don't get .debs this way, Paul gave instructions for building emc and axis in this thread: http://lists.ourproject.org/pipermail/bdi4emc-help/2006-January/000074.html Jeff

I'm afraid we will have to wait until the "make install" for emc2 is safe to use and the debian/rules produces a usable package that doesn't break. We will have to wait for the emc2 developers to resolve the outstanding issues and provide something that works. Having an Axis that will work with both emc-1.0 and emc2 is a different ball game.. There are a few differences that will result in Axis only working with emc-1.0 or emc2 and it would not be a simple exercise to produce two packages that would sit side by side on the same system. That said, it may be possible to make a few minor changes in emc-1.0 as long as the incompatabilities are restricted to the NML layer. Providing tarballs of both packages would be a simple enough exercise, but there would be no guarantee that the compile would be simple or lead to a working system - All I can do is take a CVS snapshot or official tarball and when it breaks hand you over to the relevant developers.. Hi all, Are SATA drives not supported by the BDI? I successfully did an install etc. on a system with IDE drives, but now when I try to do it on one with SATA drives I immediately get the notice "No hard drives have been found. You probably need to manually chose device drivers for the installation to succeed. Would you like to select drivers now?" The system does in fact have two SATA hard drives. I tried several of the options for installing drivers manually or custom setup, but the necessary drivers are never listed. However proceeding as far as I can with the install invariably ends up with the message "An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of the problem." Any ideas? Thanks, Eric

Sata drives are another kettle of fish for us. To be usable, the correct drivers for the sata chipset on the motherboard will need to be compiled directly into the kernel, along with the correct filesystems drivers. This is also true for ide/atapi stuff now. I think it can be done, but I have not, no sata drives yet here at the coyote.den domain. It will require a kernel rebuild/reinstall after re-configuring it. That I do regularly anyway.
Thanks, Eric
