Software engineering

(Redirected from Software development)

Software engineering (SE) is the profession concerned with creating and
maintaining SE applications by applying SE technologies and practices.

SE applications embody social and economic value, by making people more
productive, improving their quality of life, and enabling them to do things
that would otherwise be impossible. SE applications include ATMs, compilers,
databases, email, embedded systems, graphics, office suites, operating
systems, robotics, video games, world wide web, and more.

SE technologies and practices help developers to create and maintain
applications, by improving productivity and quality. SE technologies and
practices include languages, databases, tools, platforms, libraries,
standards, patterns, processes, and more.

The community of software engineers includes about 611,900 practitioners and
16,495 educators in the U.S. and 1,400,000(?) practitioners in the E.U., Asia,
and elsewhere (in the year 2002). About half of all practitioners have
computer science degrees. Barry Boehm, Fred Brooks, David Parnas and many
other pioneers made important contributions to SE.
