*Empathy: you probably have an intuitive sense of what it is, but can you
define it? The word itself is about a century old, and the meaning has
actually been in almost continual flux.*
On top of that, there’s debate about whether empathy is a good and useful
feeling that can help us move toward a kinder and more just world, or
whether it’s actually counterproductive.
The word was first used in German as “einfühlung” or in-feeling around the
turn of the last century. It was used in the context of aesthetics, an area
of philosophy. “It was about ‘feeling into’ things, like forms and shapes
and art objects,” said Susan Lanzoni, a science and medicine historian
based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and author of Empathy: A History.

At its core, the Mediate Your Life training is about listening to - and
really hearing - ourselves and others. It is about increasing our capacity
for empathy so that when triggered we can overcome the body's natural
"fight-flight-freeze" reaction. The process teaches how to replace conflict
with true collaboration, new possibilities, and compassionate support.

As an executive coach and human-behavior professor, I have an inside view
into how the great leaders and high-performers practice empathy
Here are similarities I've observed in how they flex their feeling
muscles.
1. They are fully present with others.Empathetic people have a way of
making you feel like you're the only one in the room. When they interact
with someone, they give that person the gift of their full attention and
respect, which is rare in today's hyper-distracted world.
2. They've mastered the art of active listening.
3. They tune into nonverbal communication.
4. They pause.
5. They replace advice-giving with asking questions.
6. They speak in terms of "we," not "me."
7. They imagine others' point of view.

An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process. The process supports
meaningful and constructive dialogue. The basic process can be fairly
easily learned in about 15 minutes. It increases mutual understanding and
connection by ensuring that each person feels fully heard to their
satisfaction.

Empathetic leaders find younger workers lacking empathy like never before,
yet can adequately build the self-image of their workers of any age by
emotionally connecting with their state of mind. This is a retention
strategy that doesn’t take long because the nervous system is emotionally
reading others hundreds of times per second.Empathetic leaders avoid
judgments about drama and instead identify the emotions within.
By shifting the focus from the attention-getting facts to the heart of the
matter, employees internalize your authenticity, which evokes maturity and
belonging. Belonging is crucial to motivation. People work harder when they
feel belonging.

*Over the past decade, teaching empathy has surged in popularity across
United States education. Some schools may not teach it yet. Others may
teach it as early as elementary schools. Some even give it a shot in middle
schools and high schools. *
But why is empathy important to teach? Isn’t it something that people are
just born having? And if you do have to teach it, how can you teach a soft
skill that's so conceptual and non-concrete? In this blog post, we’ll
answer all of those questions so you can start teaching empathy tomorrow!
Now that you’re motivated to teach empathy, let’s lighten the mood with
some awesome empathy lesson plans!
1. Developing Empathy (Teaching Tolerance)
2. Empathy in Your Classroom (The Teachers Guild)
