*Program*
*International Conference on*
* “Buddhist Economics and World Crises”*
Hosted by World Buddhist University
At Whale Hotel, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand
29 May 2016
*Rationale*
Capitalism, with its logic of minimizing cost and maximizing
profit for the accumulation of private property, has caused economic,
social, cultural and ecological crises not only in the Third World, but
also in the First World. There is an attempt among Buddhists both in the
East and the West to establish a Buddhist economic model in response to the
exploitative and destructive nature of capitalist economic structures.
While modern economics confines its regard to events within its
specialized sphere, Buddhist economics would investigate how a given
economic activity affects the three interconnected spheres of human
existence: the individual, society, and nature or the environment. In
modern economics, well-being is usually measured in terms of per capita
income and consumption, such as the amount of money expended on medical
care and education. A growing number of people are dissatisfied with
material growth models and have been searching for alternative measures of
well-being with less materialistic and more qualitative goals. Buddhist
economics arises out of this demand for new economic objectives.
Recognizing the importance of Buddhist Economics’ contribution
to today’s world crises, The World Buddhist University holds an
International Conference on the topic of “Buddhist Economics and World
Crises.” We hope to create a network and cooperation among Economists,
Buddhist Economists, and Buddhist scholars who share the idea that an
alternative way of doing economics is needed if the world is going to be
sustained.
*Objective*
1. To recognize the contribution of Buddhist Economics to today’s world
crises.
2. To create an academic atmosphere for Economists and Buddhist
scholars to discuss and exchange their ideas.
3. To create a network and cooperation among Economists, Buddhist
Economists, and Buddhist scholars in this field.
